What is Cypress Essential Oil Good For

What is cypress essential oil good for? First and foremost, it's astringent and drying. It a's a diuretic that clears excess water in the body. It cuts grease on the skin and supports healthy respiratory function. It helps to focus the mind and focuses on office workers. Emotionally, it supports a user through times of upheaval, transition, and change.

Cypress is a large evergreen tree in the south of France, where most of the essential oil is produced. It is also found in Italy, Portugal, Corsica, Spain, and North Africa. The species is extremely ancient. When I visited the forbidden city in Beijing in 2015, I saw cypress trees that were 900 years old. I believe that they can live as long as 2000 years. The species date back to the Pliocene era, between 5.3 and 1.8 million years ago.

Cypress

According to The Complete Guide To Aromatherapy (Third Edition, Volume 1-Foundations And Materia Medica) by Salvatori Battaglia, the most commonly used actions cited in aromatherapy are:

Antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, deodorant, diuretic, hemostatic, hepatic, styptic, sudorific venous decongestant, and tonic.

Historical successes of using this essential oil have included:

Diuretic

Cypress essential oil flushes the system out.

It’s extremely useful for edema of any sort. So, if there are puffy ankles, bloating during PMS, puffy eyes, or lymphatic problems, all of those are helped by cypress essential oil.

Clearly, since it is so diuretic, it is also very good for urinary retention.

The downside, of course, is it always makes you want to go to the toilet more when you use it.

Menstrual problems

It wouldn’t be the first oil I would choose for menstrual problems. Clary SageRose, Ylang ylang, or Geranium would always do a better job. However, if we look at it from a medical astrology perspective, cypress essential oil is ruled by Pluto. Pluto is about transformation, but more, it’s about sexual issues. Repression, abuse, initiation.

As an aromatherapist, we often find that tension in the lower back may be related to sexual tension and even sexual abuse. These will often make menstrual problems much worse. So, if this seems to be something that might ring true, then cypress would be a better oil to choose from, and of course, it is wonderful for water retention too.

Menopausal Symptoms

Again here, it’s not necessarily a hormonal oil.

As we talked about Pluto's involvement in transformation, we can see how that would apply to menopause. Cypress essential oils are useful if somebody is struggling with losing their sexuality or finding the loss of fertility troubling.

For example, for someone unsuccessful in conceiving, when they find their time has finally run out, menopause can be particularly difficult. Cypress would be a tremendous essential oil for them.

Headaches Caused by Too Much Tv, Computer, or Office Static

This is one of my favorite ways to use cypress, although I probably don’t need it as much as I used to.

In my previous life, I worked in an office with fluorescent lighting, and obviously in front of a computer screen. You absorb a lot of positive irons when you work in that environment, which can lead to headaches and fuzzy thinking.

Astringent - Cleansing for Oily Skin and Hair

I add it to my face creams. These positive ions can make your skin look dull and lifeless. Cypress neutralizes positive ions, cleaning the skin much better than any other oil. Add astringent. I like it in moisturizers and cleansers.

Bear in mind that if you have dry skin, you only want to use the very smallest amounts

Adding vinegar to give greasy hair a final rinse is very useful. Cypress is tremendous for boys who have greasy teenage hair. It has a lovely masculine fragrance, so if they can’t be tempted to use lavender moisturizers to combat their oily skin, cypress is fabulous.

Deodorant

Seems to be very helpful for people who sweat excessively.

Its refreshing nature makes it a beautiful ingredient for foot creams and baths.

Respiratory

Clary Sage has an invigorating and refreshing element, which also soothes coughs.

Battaglia cites it for acute and chronic bronchitis and whooping cough.

Tisserand describes it as a powerful antispasmodic and recommends it for asthma.

What is Cypress Essential Oil Good for Emotionally

One of my favorite ways to think about cypress essential oil is to think about the important role the tree played in ancient Greece.

The father of medicine was Asklepios, and his sanctuary was a place called Epidaurus.

People would go to Epidaurus for healing and to participate in dream incubation. There they would sleep with snakes and wait for visitations and answers to their questions about their health and their future.

A circle of cypress trees surrounded Epidaurus.

This was unusual because of this association with Pluto, whom the ancient Greeks called Hades, the god of the Underworld. As such, then, Cypress is quintessentially associated with death. For this reason, we often find it growing in graveyards.

Cypress essential oil is extremely helpful for grief.

It's an extremely refreshing essential oil and rejuvenates the spirit.

I use it for people who feel overwhelmed and cannot stop crying. You might think about how this is associated with menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms, as well as depression and shock.

It’s interesting how cypress essential oil is so good for teenage skin and also seems helpful for teenage angst.

Transition

Any situation where there is a change from one state to another. Think how overwhelming moving a house can be. Maybe leaving home to go to university. A new job, or getting married.

We can see how the grief of divorce would be beautifully helped by cypress. The death of one relationship hopefully opens a new circle for a new way of life.

What is Cypress Essential Oil Good for Mentally?

We probably covered this earlier when I talked about the effects of positive ions in the environment from spending too much time working on a computer.

It helps you think more clearly.

Cyprus essential oil is quite steadfast. It helps you speak your truth more clearly and see the truth of a problem. It’s vibrant, innovative, and motivated.

What is Cypress Essential Oil Good for Spiritually?

In Healing The Spirit, Gabriel Mojay says Cypress oil has one of the most distinct and profound psychological actions.

“The sour, astringent, and woody notes of the essence convey a feeling of cohesion and stability. At the same time it’s fresh, coniferous pungency and ability to circulate the qi and blood is related to both psychological transition and real life change. Cypress oil’s most basic subtle action then is to help us cope with and accept even difficult change-of both an inner and outer nature.”

Conclusion

What is cypress essential oil good for clearing? Clearing the way emotionally, mentally, and spiritually cleansing the body of residual fluids and grime. I’d love to hear about how you use Cypress essential oil.
