What Are Perfume Fragrance Oils?
What are perfume fragrance oils?
A perfume fragrance oil is a highly scented oil that can be used to create a variety of perfumed products, from decadent alcohol-based fragrances, like artisan perfume and aftershave, to simple roll-ons and everything in between.ย
Choose VINEVIDA Soaps & Candles variants of our fragrance oils to make perfume. These are designed to provide intense, resilient, and long-lasting scents.
Our perfume fragrance oils are skin-safe and free from SLES, SLS, Phthalates, and Parabens. They are also cruelty-free and never tested on animals.ย
How Do They Differ From Essential Oils?
Perfume fragrance oils differ quite considerably from essential oils.ย
Essential oils are produced through the distillation of natural plant matter. The distillation process captures the plant's chemical properties, giving the oils therapeutic effects on the human mind, body, and spirit.
Some perfume fragrance oils may include essential oils,( or constituents of essential oils like linalool, coumarin, and limonene) but they might also be entirely synthetic. This is often the case when manufacturers want to capture the scents of florals like Lily of the Valley and Hyacinth that might be too ethereal or fleeting to work otherwise.ย
Essential oils have properties that can influence our well-being, whereas perfume fragrance oils do not.ย
Fragrance oils can also be used in conjunction with essential oils to create harmonious accords or to add weight to certain aspects of the blend. Combiningย perfume fragrance oils withย essential oils offers perfumers more scope and versatility in projects

Types Of Perfume Fragrance Oils
When you first start working with perfume fragrance oils it helps to understand the basic categories into which they fall.
Top, Middle & Base Notes
Top notes are light and ethereal and don't last long on the skin. Citrus aromas are a perfect example of top notes and the light, airy effect they bring to a scent.
Middle notes are the heart and body of the scent and it need to be carefully balanced, many fragrances, even those for men, have floral hearts with Rose, Jasmine, and Neroli being the most popular.
Base notes last the longest on the skin, sometimes for hours after. Woods like sandalwoods and cedarwood and spices like cinnamon and clove bring richness and body to the scent.ย
It is really important to carefully balance your middle and base notes to create a well-rounded and harmonious fragrance.ย

Scent Types
Perfume fragrance oils tend to fall into the following categories.ย
Floral
One of the most widely used categories in the perfumery world. The heart of many fragrances is bursting with beautiful blooms and floral aromas. Lavender, geranium, rose, jasmine and neroli (orange blossom) are all widely used. Yet, there are so many alluring flowers like violet, heliotrope, and gardenia that can be used as well.ย
Some flowers donโt distill well at all. If you want a hyacinth, lilac, orchid, and lily of the valley-based fragrance, you will benefit from using perfume fragrance oils instead of essential oils.ย
Wonderfully aromatic and fragrant florals can be soft, sensuous, and wildly romantic. Notes of rose work wonders through most scent profiles, it is extremely versatile.ย
Perfume skills challenge with florals:
Have a go at creating a bright and airy spring sensation with a fusion of light cherry blossom (NO. 1108) fragrance oil and the heady and intoxicating aroma of lily of the valley fragrance
Herbal
Fresh, green, and invigorating aromas like rosemary, thyme, and basil are popular choices in modern perfumery. Sage is often found in oceanic-themed fragrances and eucalyptus is always a refreshing choice. Fresh spring-like accords can be created with green herbal perfume fragrance oils.
Peppermint brings cooling energy alongside spearmint. Clean, crisp, fresh, and full of vitality and life.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have plants like patchouli and grasses like vetiver that are deep, rich, and have a real earthiness to their aroma.ย ย
Perfume skills challenge with herbals:
Try creating a spring breeze fragrance accord with a fresh, green herb of your choice and lilac fragrance oil (NO. 49)
Fruity
Fruit is widely used in commercial perfumery. One of my first memories of perfume as a child was an Apple scent that my grandmother bought me. It was sharp, ultra-green, and refreshing, it captivated me.
These days I love the depth of blackcurrant, fig, black cherry, and ripe plums. Summary fragrances are imbued with juicy and delicious pear, papaya, and pineapple aromas.ย
Perfume skills challenge with fruit:
Try creating a balanced accord with jasmine fragrance oil (NO. 44) and bergamot fragrance oil, where the bergamot is the start of the show rather than the jasmine. You can of course use Bergamot essential oil instead if you wish.ย
Spicy
Oriental fragrances are usually based around the warming aspects of spice. Cardamom, clove, allspice, and star anise all pack a punch. While gentler coriander, ginger, and nutmeg add warmth and aromatics.ย
Spices work so well with florals, woods, and resins to create warming, sensuous fragrances. For instance, take a deliciously comforting and warm vanilla and run ribbons of it through ginger and cardamom for a mouthwatering effect.ย
Perfume skills challenge with spices:
Try the spiced incense aromas of nag champa (NO. 54) fragrance oil with the fresh, romantic softness of rose fragrance oil (NO. 33)
Resins
Frankincense and Myrrh are resins that come from trees in Africa and the Middle East. However, it is Amber that has by far the biggest presence in the perfume industry. I have to confess it is my absolute favorite because of its sheer versatility. Resins bring extra dimension and depth to fragrances, creating rich, complex accords.ย
Perfume skills challenge with resins:
Please try this wonderful amber fragrance oil (NO. 1200) with the soft, warming aromatic notes of a vanilla fragrance oil (NO. 70).
Woods
Woods are extremely popular in men's fragrances for their obvious masculine scent, but they work beautifully in all fragrances, regardless of gender. Woods are key to creating balanced unisex fragrances.
We need to exercise caution with woods like Palo Santo and Sandalwood that are either critically endangered or their habitats are. This is where fragrance oils can help with sustainability and protect vulnerable plants and habitats. If you want just the aroma of these woods, use perfume fragrance oils instead, please.ย
Try balancing woodsy Cedarwood and Amyris with herbal florals to create a unisex aroma.ย
Perfume skills challenge with Woods:
There are some wonderful sandalwood fragrance oils out there, try balancing one with the woody, resinous scents of NO. 21 - Cedarwood & Amber.
Animalic
It seems strange to have an โAnimalicโ section for perfume fragrance oils, yet, there are more than you might think. Choose from aromas like Egyptian musk, ambergris, leather, castoreum, and civet.ย
They are heady, rich, sensual and can add a little je nais sais quoi to your overall fragrance blend. These types of perfume fragrance oils can add an earthy and musky aroma that can be used to intoxicate and captivate your intended, as they are quite sexual aromas.ย
Perfume skills challenge with Animalics:
Try a variety of musks through from light to dark and create accords with florals. Start with light musks and light florals and work through to the deeper, darker, headier aromas. Try a dark musk with gardenia or tuberose.ย
Gourmand
Gourmand perfume fragrance oils are based on food and drink. Take notes of green, white and black tea and mix them with the lactonic notes of milk for familiar scent accords. Dabble with chocolate, caramel, and marshmallow aromas and mix them with full bodied fruits and even wine or spirit aromatics to evoke your favorite home comforts. Is your mouth watering yet?
Perfume skills challenge with Gourmands:
Try creating a delicious and warming accord with vanilla fragrance oil (NO. 70) and a bourbon fragrance oil (NO. 45)
Fragrance Families
A perfume designer may decide which fragrance family they wish to create or they may wait until the scent has finished maturing before defining its family. As scents mature, they can change in unexpected ways depending on the materials used, especially natural materials like essential oils.
It is these fragrance family descriptions that help give us the best overview of what type of scent it is. Floral, fresh, woody, amber, oriental and lesser known descriptors like gourmand, fougรฉre and chypres.
I found this wonderful Fragrance Family Scent Wheel from Scent Beauty, which gives you a great visual depiction of the types of fragrance families.ย
Do a little research about these types of fragrances and their construction to inform your own design process with perfume fragrance oils.ย
Perfume Fragrance Oils, What They Are Not
When working with perfume fragrance oils we need to understand their parameters, and to have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with them.ย
Plants make essential oils (or rather they make their secondary metabolites which are changed into essential oils when they are distilled) because of how they react to the challenges that happen around them when they are growing. The chemistry of the plant continuall responds to its surroundings.ย
So, every distillation will make a very slightly different oil, which is beautiful andย why artisan perfumers are so popular at the moment. Their natural fragrances are pure, natural fragrancesย that are unlikely to be easily. Replicated. The natural variations in their plant based components mean these are truly one of a kind.ย
Butย design houses sell to a much bigger and different commercial market. For them, its important that every bottle of perfume smells absolutely identical. So, for them essential oils may not be a very reliable plan and so their solution is often to use synthetic ingredients.ย ย
Professional Perfumery Components
Designing perfume is an art of nuance, balance and technique. Perfumers create a variety of complementary accords, then blend those together to form synergistic aromas. It is these blends of accords which build up to create the unique โfragrance concentrateโ.ย
This concentrate formula is then diluted with distilled water to create the perfume products, such as: parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau fraiche and eau de cologne. But in addition toย perfume fragrance oils, master perfumers haveย access to a whole range of ingredients that we mere mortals would struggle to obtain.ย
In addition to the worldโsย best essential oils in the world, they have otherย professional perfumery components like:
- Indole which gives an animalic aroma. An almost fecal note that is powerful, sexy and alluring!
- Calone evokes the scent of sea breezes and whips up ocean waves around us.ย
- Cashmeran is rich, amber and floral with a deep musk element. Cashmeran emulates cashmereโs velvety, sensuous caress.
- Jasmine is a very important scent in perfumery, but it is prohibitively expensive to use in large amounts. So Hedione was created to emulate it.ย The light, citrusy top notes dry down into that gorgeous floral aroma with a lovely woody finish. Actually, Jasmine itself does not have anywhere that kind of complexity.ย ย
- Muguet is the French name for Lily of The Valley. Since there are no natural extracts of this plant, all muguet components are synthetic.
Managing Expectations
If you are trying to directly copy your favorite branded fragrance it may be that you will not have all the ingredients needed to do that and, you may need to adjust your expectations of what is possible. Additionally, try to remember that perfumers train for many many years to hone their skills well enough to make really exquisite products. Training is long and complex which is why the world's top perfumers are so highly sought after. Perfumery is a real art and skill.
All that said and acknowledged, we too can become skilled and build upon existing experimentation using perfume fragrance oils and essential oils to create our own wonderful bespoke fragrance. It is really not difficult to create really beautiful fragrances for yourself just using perfume fragrance oils.
Do some background reading on using perfume fragrance oils to create bespoke fragrances and your own custom scent. Best read in order.ย
What Do I Need To Make Perfume With Perfume Fragrance Oils
Let me guess, youโve got a handful of luscious perfume fragrance oils and want to make perfume, aftershaves or colognes but have no clue where to start? Fear not! Letโs get you pointed in the right direction to use those perfume fragrance oils to their best advantage
You do need some specialist ingredients and equipment to successfully make your own alcohol-based fragrances, using perfume fragrance oils. Thankfully most of it can be sourced economically.ย
Perfumers Alcohol
If you want to make an alcohol-based scent, you need to buy perfumerโs alcohol. Forget thinking you can use a high strength vodka or proprietary commercial alcohol. You just wonโt get the best results from your precious essential oils and perfume fragrance oils.
Let me explain why you need perfumers alcohol, so you understand the process and what the ingredients do.
We use alcohol in perfumes because it is volatile. It helps to release the fragrance molecules, which then disperse the scent into the air. When we use alcohol with a high abv content, it will improve the evaporation rate of the fragrance once it's applied to the skin.
However, perfumerโs alcohol is not just alcohol, it has other ingredients that play particular roles and have different functions:
Denatured Ethanol
It contains denatured ethanol which helps dissolve and blend the aromatic compounds. This also ensures that the aromatics disperse evenly.
Denatured ethanol will inhibit the growth of unwanted bacteria and microbes to preserve its shelf life. It also assists in maintaining the overall integrity of the fragrance.ย
Isopropyl Myristate
Whenever you are trying to mix an oil with water, you need a solvent and isopropyl myristate acts as the solvent here. It binds and dilutes the essential oils and perfume fragrance oils into the perfumers alcohol, so it can later be diluted with water and the oils will stay bound into the fluid and not float to the top.ย
Isopropyl magistrate is an emollient and moisturizer, so it helps with skin absorption and influences how the perfume sits on the skin and disperses the scent.ย
Mono Propylene Glycol - MPG
Mono propylene glycol is also a solvent, helping the essential and perfume fragrance oils absorb and be dispersed into the alcohol. MPG does a wonderful job at slowing down alcohol evaporation, which means your fragrance dissipates slower and lasts longer on the skin.ย
You can see that perfumerโs alcohol gives you a much more efficient product than just using high-strength vodka. Itโs not much more expensive either.ย
Carrier Oil
You may not want to make an alcohol-based perfume so make sure you invest in really good quality carrier oils instead. Get them as fresh as possible and focus on carrier oils that have a long shelf life like Sweet Almond. Always use an extra preservative to help prolong the life of the oils.
You can also add up to 10% carrier oils into your alcohol-based perfumes for extra skin care and moisturization. It also slows down evaporation and helps the perfume fragrance oils and essential oils last longer on your skin.ย
Perfume Fragrance Oils
You will need your fragrance components and you can choose to just use perfume fragrance oils, pure essential oils, or synergistic combinations of them both. Personally, I recommend using both for full, round-bodied scent profiles.ย
Scent Strips
Scent strips help you evaluate your developing scent profile more accurately. You need to get the fragrance solution out of the bottle and to react with the oxygen in the air. It gives you a more accurate representation of how the scent is maturing.
Time
However, what you need the most of, is time and patience. Creating a wearable alcohol-based scent with perfume fragrance oils takes time, and a good deal of it. It can take several weeks and even up to 3 months for a scent profile to fully amalgamate and mature, in some cases even more.
Allow yourself time to develop your alcohol-based scents properly. Oil-based scents tend to change far less and require less maturation time.ย

Working Safely With Perfume Fragrance Oils
Most people suddenly realize when they start working with perfume fragrance oils that they have to follow skin safety recommendations from the International Fragrance Association - IFRA.
And they panic!
Do not panic!
Itโs a lot easier than you think, especially using the VINEVIDA Fragrance Calculator. However, it would behoove you to learn how to do it for yourself. Itโs much easier than you think.ย
Let me give you a working example and show you.ย
How To Work Out IFRA Safety Data
I want to make an aftershave for men, which can be used after shaving. I want to use NO. 3000ย Inspired by: Chanel Bleu by Chanel.ย
- Scroll down the individual perfume fragrance oils webpage until you see a bar with four options, one of which says DOCUMENTS.ย
- Click on that and you will see three options open up.
- You want the one entitled IFRA STATEMENT.ย
- Scroll down until you see sections where it says Category 1, 2, etc, and gives you a number in percentage %.
- Aftershaves for SHAVED skin fall into categories 3A & 3B, both of which have a maximum skin safety recommendation of 3.71%
- Therefore, you cannot use more than 3.71% of NO. 3000 in this aftershave recipe.
- If you make 100ml of aftershave, you have to use less than 3.71ml of NO. 3000 in the overall preparation.ย
It defines the maximum amount of perfume fragrance oils that you can use in your finished aftershave. It is important to understand that this percentage figure is not a recipe recommendation.ย
You need to check this safety figure for EVERY oil that you intend to use.
It is worth checking the IFRA safety data because some oils have a very low maximum skin safety dilution recommendation, that you need to keep an eye on!
Check Before You Buy
I fully appreciate how easy it is to get excited about finding your favorite perfume or aftershave in a fragrance oil only to get it home to discover the IFRA dilution rate is ridiculously low. Always check the IFRA data BEFORE you buy to avoid disappointment later.ย
If you do come across a very low dilution rate, consider how you can use other complementary fragrance oils or essential oils with higher skin-safe dilution rates to bolster your ideas and achieve your vision.ย ย
