Blending Recommendations

I always get asked, “How would you blend this”? It’s such an exciting question because there are so many ways we can blend NO. 41 - Hawaiian Sunrise.

The most challenging aspect for beginners, is being able to identify ‘gaps’ in the scent profile. This is what I will help you do today, by highlighting gaps in the profile. You see the space which you can fill with new scents and accords to create something different.

You can create brand new accords from harmonizing oils, which can be made up of just essential oils, just fragrance oils, or a combination of both.

Some are more challenging than others, but we have plenty of space to play with here.

Blending NO. 41

NO. 41 is great for beginners, as it already has a strong theme to work with. Sticking with the theme makes it easier. Though for those who want a challenge, there is plenty of space to experiment with and balances to tip one way or the other.

Top Notes

Top Notes

The top notes burst with fresh, zingy citrus and the trails of juicy tropical fruits explode forth. These set the tropical theme that is underpinned through the following notes.

So, how can we enhance the overall aroma by adding to the top notes?

To stick with the tropical theme, add more fresh fruit and citrus notes. Lime always works well with Coconut, as does Pineapple.  The slightly warmer tones of Pink Grapefruit add zest and sharpness which will balance the creaminess of the Coconut/Vanilla combo. It creates a better uplift and enlivens it.

You could really ramp up the florals and fill it top to bottom with cascades of flowers. Choose  spring flowers that tend to fall into top notes rather than heart notes. Jonquil, Bluebell and Lilac are all great contenders.

Light bright green notes will lift and elevate the profile making it more refreshing. Try Sweet Basil, or Lemongrass.

The top and heart notes of tropical scents work well with nuts, spices and woods which will add a smooth, richness to the creamy tones and will temper the heady florals. For those who relish expanding your blending skills, it’s worth studying the scent notes of our VINEVIDA NO’s 2200 through 2211, to illustrate that point.

They are all tropical scents but each has its own individual and delectable fragrance!

Recap of Suggestions For Essential Oils

    Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

    Heart Notes

    Heart Notes

The heart notes are smooth with creamy coconut and tropical flowers bloom abundantly.

It’s a beautiful balance so we need to be cautious not to upset it too much. A judicious touch and a steady hand are needed.

It could, however, take a hefty dose of florals. You could go on the lighter side with Rose, heady and intoxicating with Jasmine or Gardenia or really ramp things up with narcotic Heliotrope or Tuberose.

Everything else needs a dash of consideration.

Fruity toned spices like Cardamom, Pink and Black Pepper always work well. You could also afford to pitch it a little deeper even, with Star Anise, Cassia and Cinnamon.

Making accords from a fruity spice and a deep spice works wonderfully. Try Pink Pepper with Star Anise, or  Cardamom with Cinnamon.

Again, those nutty and foodlike aromas would work well in the heartspace too.

    Base Notes

    Base Notes

The base note here is a simple flourish of smooth, creamy Vanilla. Vanilla always makes us feel comforted and can instill a sense of safety within us. If you are in need of some comfort in the home, ramp up the Vanilla and add some more.

Heavy hitting spices like Clove and Cinnamon can be added here to add warmth and a new dimension.

If you want to introduce woods, stay on the rich side and choose a Sandalwood or go a little lighter with Amyris.  Oud and Amber can add a sense of opulence and contribute rich, heavenly aromas.

    Final Blending Thoughts

Hopefully, I have given you plenty of ideas about how to use the suggested harmonizing accords to ‘construct’ your blends.

The tropical theme is already decided for you, and it can be hard to move away from that, so you simply enhance or add new aspects along that tropical theme.

It is only in deepening the profile with notes of heavy spices, woods, tobacco and more vanilla that we can flip it to a more masculine aroma. Just be cautious of your overall balance if you choose this option and work patiently, as described in the blending framework below.

NO. 41 offers you plenty of space in the scent profile to play with and add your own twist. You will have enormous fun creating bespoke tropical blends with other VINEVIDA essential and fragrance oils.

Designing Exciting Diffuser Blends With NO. 41

Designing Exciting Diffuser Blends With NO. 41

NO. 41 is a tropical fragrance oil that evokes fruit and floral notes. It’s fresh, uplifting and enlivening and transports us to the tropics.

Our original perfumer kindly left us some space in the scent profile to play with, so we can make it our own.

You can play with that gender balance and really deepen it down with big booming base notes for a sensuous affair.

Creating your own diffuser blends is perfect for beginners. However, the more seasoned among us, can build on their blending skills with NO. 41 and play hide and seek with the tropical theme. Can you hide it?

Don’t forget that these are very much suggestions. Please have the courage to create accords and diffuser blends all of your own, it is something that we heartily encourage.

    Follow This Blending Framework

    Top Notes

      1. With citrus leading in the top notes you can add a little more citrus, try Pink Grapefruit and Lime.
      2. To improve the overall freshness and lift it further, introduce new green notes like Sweet Basil and Lemongrass.
      3. Add more tropical fruits like Pink Grapefruit, Pineapple and Lychee, to round out the profile with a dash of sweetness.

    Heart Notes

      1. The heart space is smooth and creamy with Coconut so go one of three ways with this delicate balance.
      2. Floral - Add heady tropical flowers like Jasmine, Gardenia or Ylang Ylang.
      3. Spicy - Choose spice that has fruity tones of its own like orange scented Cardamom, or Pink or Black Pepper and pair it with a deeper spice note like Star Anise or Cinnamon.
      4. Bakery - Introduce bakery-like notes that are also sweet, smooth and creamy. Nut notes, chocolate and caramel tones work amazingly well.

    Base Notes

      1. Go wild in the base notes, as there is only Vanilla filling this space.
      2. Introduce a range of rich woods like Amyris or Sandalwood.
      3. Go luxurious and indulgent with notes of Amber and Oud.
      4. Tobacco supports the tropical plant theme and adds deep delicious aromas to really draw the scent profile down further.

    Professional Blending Techniques

      1. I cannot extol enough to you the virtues of learning the benefits of patience,  when you start blending. Practice working in tiny increments, a couple of drops at a time. Each time, stopping to mix and test it, and you can’t go wrong!
      2. Invest in some scent strips as you get a more accurate hold on the developing scent, when you use a scent strip to evaluate its aroma. For such a cost effective product, they really do make a noticeable difference to your evaluation. The trick is to get the fragrance out of the bowl/bottle and into the air to evaluate it more accurately, as it reacts to the oxygen in the air.
      3. You will be glad of these last two points when you are using costly essential oils and absolutes. Since working in this way helps you avoid potentially costly mistakes!
      4. I fully appreciate it requires a sense of discipline and applied patience to work in this manner, but honestly, it is worth it! It is a fairly foolproof method, built upon my own costly mistakes! Let me help you avoid doing the same!
      5. Avoid going nose blind when blending and take a break every 20 minutes to give your nose a rest for at least 10 minutes. When you go nose blind, you lose the ability to evaluate the aromas effectively along with it!
      6. Keep in mind the need to preserve the balance of the overall scent, and you improve your chances of creating successful and amazing blends.

    IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends

Diffuser Blends fall into IFRA Category 12. In this category NO. 41 Hawaiian Sunrise fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions.

    Method:

      1. It’s so easy, simply take a small measuring jug and into it, carefully measure out all of your fragrance oils and/or essential oils.
      2. Take a spoon and mix them together until combined thoroughly.
      3. Take a 10ml dropper bottle and use a funnel to decant your diffuser blend into it. Try and keep the bottle as clean and oil free as possible to help your label adhere.
      4. Always use a quality silicone spatula to help you to get every last morsel of precious oil into the bottle. Get into the habit of not wasting a drop of oil, expensive or otherwise, it’s far more sustainable.
      5. I cannot stress enough the importance of labeling your bottles. It is imperative as they contain undiluted oil and they present a safety hazard.
      6. Using a waterproof and oil-proof label and clearly list all of the ingredients.
      7. Don’t forget to add the date too and use it within 12 months.
      8. For obvious safety reasons, mark the label clearly as ‘UNDILUTED’ .

How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:

      1. For specific guidance on your individual diffusers, always consult your individual manufacturer's instructions.
      2. Please follow the manufacturer's individual instructions on diluting your diffuser blends, or not.
      3. How To Use Vinevida Oils will offer you some generalized advice on using fragrance oils in differing types of diffuser.

    Tropical Flower Cascade

We are going crazy about tropical flowers and weaving them through the top, heart and base notes to create a floral sensation.

It will be pretty heady, so only use it for about an hour at a time and then have a break for 30 minutes.

It is ideal for use anywhere in the home, with its deeply feminine aroma. It’s perfect for bedrooms and more intimate settings. It is sophisticated enough for more formal settings, but be mindful of using it in small bursts please.

    The Dark Side

    The Dark Side

Take the tropical aromas and move them to the dark side with this more masculine offering. The tropical heart is still there but rich ribbons of unctuous darkness weave through it beautifully. Embrace the dark side.

I loaded rich fruit into the top notes and flooded the heart notes with a touch of sugar and spice.

Balancing that with those deep dark luscious aromas of Tobacco, Oud and Vanilla in the base notes.

Perfect for anywhere in the more masculine home, otherwise save it for bedrooms and sitting rooms…and even the boardroom!

Scentscape Your Party And Be The Talk Of The Town!

Scentscape Your Party And Be The Talk Of The Town!

The ideas just keep coming this week with NO. 41 - Hawaiian Sunrise and this is one that can really set you apart from the crowd and get people talking.

Hawaiian Sunrise is perfect for Hawaiian lūʻau and tropical themed parties. Creating a scentscape is a new way of creating the perfect party experience. It’s a perfect way to trial your unique diffuser blends and make your party stand out.

Think about scenting your party linen, whether it is paper or fabric with this fragrance oil. Popping a stack of napkins into a plastic container with a cotton wool pad soaked in fragrance oil and left for 48 hours will have them beautifully scented for your party.

Scenting your party props helps you to continue the theme more convincingly when you are engaging all the senses of your guests.  Add a few drops to your Pináta, to your table centerpieces and I also like to add a drop to the bunting by an open door to help the scent permeate both inside and outside.

You can continue your incredible scentscape with scented candles, reed diffusers and  vaporizers in the background. Don’t forget to keep to the theme in the bathroom and cloakrooms too.

Bring in fresh versions of the scent notes to your buffet table and drinks bar to consolidate your tropical theme. Serve Pina Colados to elevate the fruit and coconut notes. Pop Lemons and Oranges on the buffet table to reinforce those citrus notes. Centerpieces with tropical flowers like Tiare, will really help to expand your story and create an unforgettable experience.

Your party will be all anyone can talk about because you fired all of their senses at once!

Recipes Full Of Tropical Sunshine With NO. 41

NO. 41 - Hawaiian Sunrise is such a versatile fragrance oil, the only limit here is your imagination. With its vibrant citrus and fruity start, Coconut heart and tropical floral and Vanilla finish, it is absolutely amazing for use in toiletries and beauty products and for cold process soaps.

I don’t know about you but my hands are starting to show signs of a bit too much sunshine and my hair has seen better days in this humid heat! With that in mind, for this week recipes I have plumped for luscious Hand Cream and an amazing Hair Treatment.

Citrus and fruit scents always tend to evoke images of freshness, cleanliness and energy and they can be well utilized here.

    Hand Cream

    Hand Cream

I like a Hand Cream that has a scent that makes me FEEL something, a scent that brings something alive in my memory banks and helps me connect to something lovely.  Hawaiian Sunrise fragrance oil simply makes you smile.

I don’t know about you, but often by the time I am reaching for Hand Cream it is because I need something comforting and cosserting too. Not just for my skin, but also my soul. Try this, it’s sure to bring a smile to your face everytime you rub it into your hardworking and deserving hands.

The essential oils I have added are full of antioxidants to fight free radicals and reduce the signs of sun damage and skin aging.

The safety dilution for this category is very low, just 0.21%, so you will need some essential oils to help the strength of the scent, but not overpower it. We are going to keep to a lightly scented but delicious hand cream.

    IFRA Safety

NO. 41  in IFRA Category 5C has maximum safety restrictions of 0.21%

This means that in 100ml of product, you can use up to 0.21 ml of NO. 41 - Hawaiian Sunrise  Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.

This is a very low safety dilution rate. We may need to consider what we can add to it, to enhance the overall formulation.

You can use the Hand Cream option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes.

    The Final Word

    The Final Word

It has been totally tropical this week working with the fresh, fruity and floral aroma of NO. 41 - Hawaiian Sunrise Fragrance Oil, I hope it has enlivened your senses too.

Ideally, it should give you plenty of exciting ideas on how to use this vibrant and energizing fragrance oil. It is such a versatile fragrance with those bright citrus and fruity notes. Followed by tempting Coconut and the exotic tropical floral notes, which give way to comforting Vanilla for that final flourish of deliciousness.

Have a whole heap of fragrant fun and experiment with the accords and develop your own harmonizing aromas. By creating all the diffuser blends, it will build on your blending skills and experience and also your confidence in working with fragrance oils.

Feel in tip top condition with our tropical Hand Cream and our rather delicious Hair Treatment, just don’t eat it! Refresh yourself with NO. 41, we love its vibrant tropical nature here at VINEVIDA.
