IFRA Safety Considerations With Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
First of all, what is IFRA?
The International Fragrance Regulation Authority creates guidelines about natural fragrance constituents that might have safety considerations with them. For instance, certain oils might have constituents that could irritate the skin, or others that even have theoretical cancer concerns attached. These constituents appear in such small amounts that, rather than leaving them out, IFRA says “It would be safe to use abc much if you are making an XYZ product.”
They take into consideration that the skin under the arms is more delicate than the outside of them; likewise around your eyes might have different concerns to the rest of your face, or if you have shaved recently.
All of these issues are already addressed for you and calculated to make sure that your fragrance does what you want it to, in the place it was designed for.

Find the IFRA Statement to advise you of the maximum percentage of the specific oil you intend to use in your formulation. The safety of every fragrance oil varies, so it is important to check each individual one.

Calculating Maximum Dilutions from IFRA Data
Calculating how much you can use is much easier in practice than it sounds.
First, identify which category your product relates to.
Is it a deodorant? Category 2
Or perhaps an aftershave? Category 4
We’ll use one of my recent Fragrance Oil Of The Week articles to provide a working example. The recipe is for a hair oil which would fall under category 9.
It reads:
“NO. 61, in IFRA Category 9, has a maximum safety restriction of 22.1%.
This means that in 100 ml of Hair Oil, you could safely use up to 22 ml of NO. 61 - Pina Colada Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.
However, 22% is rather a lot, you don’t need this much. I’d recommend no more than about 5%”.
As I said, it is much easier to do than it looks, and referring to the IFRA guidelines should reassure you that you are working safely and caring for your skin in the best way possible.
TOP TIP:
If you plan to use any of the fragrance oils regularly, it may behoove you to print out the IFRA Statement for easy referral.
I do this and then roll it around the bottle and fasten it with an elastic band. That way I can just pick up the bottle and have IFRA data at my fingertips. There is no need to stop what I am doing, with mucky fingers to then have to go and check online!
