Blend Like A Professional With NO. 2204
It’s a fair question to ask -“How would you blend this”? As NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro is a pretty complex fragrance oil just as it is, you’d be forgiven for not having a clue where to start. Hey, that’s why I am here, to hold your hand through the process all the way!
Allow me to highlight gaps and define the space you can play with. Let me show you how to create new and exciting accords with harmonizing oils. These can be made up of fragrance oils, essential oils, or complementary combinations of both.
Blending Ideas For NO. 2204
NO. 2204 is a gourmand, meaning it is inspired by the aroma of food and drink. The balance here is key and really does lie in the edible side of things. If we go adding in non-edible floral, or wood aromas, could we upset that balance?Top Notes
The top notes sing with the creamy sweetness of Coconut and Marshmallow. Soft, unctuous, and gooey. It makes us want to sink our teeth into its soft yielding center. As we peruse the other scent notes, they all have smooth, creamy notes. Many of them are also sweet.
It’s interesting to think about how taste works here. When we taste something too sweet, it is usual to crave something sharp to cut through the sweetness. Citrus notes like Sweet Orange, Mandarin, or even sharp Lime all act as zingy refreshers that enliven the blend.
Alternatively, you could add fruit or berries but you would need to watch the balance of sweetness to prevent it being cloying. Pineapple, Watermelon, and Pomegranate would all be great choices but my choice would be tart Cherry or Raspberry.
Recap on Suggestions For Essential Oils
Sweet Orange, Mandarin and Lime will all cut through the sweetness and brighten and balance NO. 2204 by elevating those top notes.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
Pair it with fresh, lively fruits like NO. 62 - Pineapple Slices, or pair it with something richer and deeper like NO. 1103 - Inspired by: Black Cherry Merlot by Bath & Body Works.
Heart Notes
The heart notes of NO. 2204 are deliciously rich and super-sweet. Gooey Caramel meets those golden droplets of runny Honey and the nuttiness of beautiful Praline.
They seduce and draw you further into the profile. You’re not even fully in it yet, but you won’t want to leave. And therein lies your question. What can I add in this space that compliments or intensifies that feeling?
They have lovely warm aromas and you can build on those by adding spices which would work really well in these gaps. You could use a handful throughout the profile to deepen it and give it a bit of an edge. Try Ginger, Nutmeg, and the orange tones of Cardamom.
Many of the Sol De Janeiro fragrance oils have a mix of these gourmand aromas and beautiful tropical flowers like Jasmine, Orchid, and Hibiscus. You could add in a little floral, but be super careful with that balance, especially against the coffee tones. I think I would be inclined to try Jasmine first.
Suggestions for Essential Oils
Warm things up with spice accords and try Ginger Root (Dried), Cardamom and Nutmeg
Go with tropical flowers like Jasmine and Ylang Ylang
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
You can add in more of those edible aromas with fragrance oils like NO. 1 - Apple Cinnamon, NO. 40 - Gingerbread and NO. 9 - Birthday Cake. Choose a more fruity option with NO. 35 - Fruit Loops.
Base Notes
The base notes are relatively simple in comparison, hot steamy Coffee swirled with a heady dose of rich creamy Vanilla. It is the coffee that finally seduces you while the Vanilla pulls you in that comforting embrace?
Again, how do we enhance these effects?
If you went for spices in the heart notes, choose heavy hitters down here like Star Anise, Clove, and Cinnamon, but just be mindful of your balance and use them sparingly.
If you were tempted by those exotic florals, why not complement them with woods, resins and maybe a dash of musk? Try the buttery aroma of Palo Santo and the Sandalwood aroma of Amyris. Amber would be utterly glorious here as would Oud. Just don’t drown those edibles out too much though. Sleight of hand here guys, please.
Essential Oil Recommendations
Add dimension and extra warmth with stronger spices, try Cinnamon Bark and Star Anise.
Palo Santo and Amyris give lovely woody aromas and Palo Santo has that delicious buttery edge to it.
Vanilla Oleoresin can really ramp up that feeling of comfort and being cosseted.
Suggestions for Fragrance Oils
You can change the personality of NO. 2204 and make it a bit more grown-up. Add opulence with NO. 1205 - Inspired by: Oud Paris by Diptyque and introduce an air of elegance with NO. 1200 - Inspired by: Ambre by Diptyque.

Blending Tips for Success
Maintain Balance
The success in your blending lies in the ability to define and maintain its balance. First, assess
your fragrance and its individual scent. Try and discern where its balance lies, but also define which elements are creating it. Will adding in certain accords disrupt the whole balance?
The key here is - How can you introduce new accords and maintain the balance?
Exercise Patience
Slow things right down and avoid making expensive mistakes. Work just a couple of drops at a time, then stop to mix and test before you move on. Working in such small amounts allows you to quickly and easily rectify any mistakes.
Use Scent Strips
Scent strips are super cheap and easy to source and they make such a difference to your evaluations. Get the fragrance into the air and out of the bottle, and let it react to the oxygen in the air. You will soon appreciate how that gives you a more accurate assessment of the developing scent.
Don’t Go Noseblind
The scent is processed in the brain, and after a while, your brain simply stops processing these scents, and you go ‘nose blind’. Avoid this by taking a ten-minute break every twenty minutes, preferably in fresh air.
Blending Framework Suggestions for NO. 2204
Don’t forget, these are very much suggestions, rather than hard and fast rules. Have fun creating new and exciting accords. Enjoy designing diffuser blends all of your own.

Delectably Delicious Recipes With NO. 2204
NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro is just mouthwateringly delicious, you’d be forgiven for just wanting to eat it… But please don’t!Gourmand-type fragrances are always popular for personal care products like shampoo, shower gel, and soap. Let’s hang on to that theme this week and make a couple of really great projects.
First, we’ll make some quick and easy Conditioning Shampoo Bars to keep your hair in tip top condition. They are great if you are traveling and lack space. They are also wonderful for cutting down on plastic consumption too!
Second, let’s make Bath Bombs, perfect for kids and the big kid in you! Who doesn’t love the explosive fizz and fragrance of an attractive Bath Bomb?
Keep your eye out for interesting soap molds that look like cupcakes, cakes, candy or sweet treats. Like the one pictured below. You can use it for both of these projects and they will make really lovely gifts as the holiday season approaches.
Sensational Conditioning Shampoo Bars
There are times when I advocate ‘cheats’ and this is one of them. Making your own shampoo is actually quite scientific and requires all sorts of weird and funky ingredients! However, we can get around that by using a ready-made solid shampoo base.
Now, you can buy any brand that you like, that is up to you. I recommend using Stephensons, simply because I have experience with it myself and it is consistently reliable, and high quality and I never have any issues with it.
You melt it, just like Melt & Pour Soap, add your fragrance and you can add a colorant if you wish. Then you pour it into your molds and wait for it to set. It is as simple as that! The only time-consuming bit is carefully wrapping them once set.
Wrap Them Up?
Yes, you need to wrap your finished Conditioning Shampoo Bars once they are set. This is because the base contains a large amount of Glycerine, which has humectant properties. For our skin and hair, this is wonderful because it draws moisture from the air and plops it right into your skin cells and it delivers hydration where you need it most.
However, if you plan to sell them or give them away as gifts, the last thing you want them to do is attract moisture. Your bar can appear glossy, and look like it has been used, which is the last thing you want. If your bars go glossy, or even chalky looking, that means they are absorbing water from the air.
A little bit of moisture is not going to present too much of an issue. However, over time your bars can go soggy and mushy and no one wants that!
What Do I Need To Do?
It is tempting to just pop them all into an airtight box unwrapped. Learn from my mistakes - this will not solve the issue, moisture will still seep into the box! While a silica gel sachet and an oxygen absorber can help, it is not a solution. They need to be wrapped, don’t skip it!
Wrap your Conditioning Shampoo Bars tightly in a couple of layers of saran wrap. You can even vacuum seal them, if you want the wrapping to be as airtight as possible. Tight, tight, tight!
It is well worth taking the time to wrap the soaps up individually. You’ll soon pick up the knack of presenting the front face of the bar and pulling all the excess wrap to the back neatly. It helps to secure it with a pretty label, so why not list all your ingredients on it too?
IFRA Safety
NO. 2204 in IFRA Category 9 has maximum safety restrictions of 10.34%.This means that in 100ml of product, you can use up to 10.34 ml of NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.
However, Stephenson recommends adding no more than 2% of additives to the solid shampoo base, which would include both fragrance and colorant.
You can use the Shampoo option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your formulations and recipes.
PYREX vs pyrex - Important Safety:
This is REALLY important and you need to check your glass measuring jugs please! Because of recent changes in branding, people are having issues with their glass jugs shattering under heat.
If your PYREX logo is all capital letters, your jug is made of borosilicate glass and it will withstand temperature fluctuations. You can use it for this project.
However, if your glass jug is labeled Pyrex in all lowercase it could potentially be made with soda-lime glass, which will not withstand the same drastic changes in temperature as the borosilicate-based ones.
Please check your jugs, we don’t want any accidents! You need to use a PYREX measuring jug for this project. (Not a Pyrex one)!
You Will Need:
- Weigh Scales
- Sharp Knife
- Heatproof gloves or pot holders
- PYREX measuring jug (needs to be microwave-safe)
- Stainless steel spoon
- Silicon Spatula
- Molds
- Oil and waterproof labels
- Saran Wrap or a Vacuum Sealer and bags
Ingredients:
- 500g Melt and Pour Shampoo Base (I recommend Stephenson’s brand)
- 7 - 10 ml of NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
- Isopropyl alcohol or high-proof vodka in a small spray bottle
Optional:
- Up to 3 ml of Liquid Colorant for Soaps
Safety:
- Wear protective gloves when handling the hot jug
- Protect surfaces and do not dispose of leftover melted soap down the drain, pour into a paper towel and place it in the refuse.
- Keep out of the reach of small children, especially if you are making soap that looks like cake or candy.
Method:
- First, protect and prepare your work surface. Newspapers are ideal because you can easily dispose of them later.
- Place all your ingredients and equipment close to your hand. This will help you to work quickly and efficiently.
- Weigh out 500g of Solid Shampoo Base 7 ml of fragrance oil and any colorant you are using. If you are not using colorant you can bump up your fragrance oil to the full 10 ml if you wish.
- With a sharp knife, chop the solid shampoo base into even chunks, no bigger than 2cm square, the more even-sized the chunks are, the better as they will melt at the same time and need to be exposed to less heat.
- Place the solid shampoo chunks all into a heat-proof measuring jug and cover with a microwavable plastic cover.
Melting The Shampoo Base
- The time it takes to melt the Shampoo base will depend on the brand and type. As a rule of thumb, it can take anywhere between 2 to 5 minutes to evenly melt your base.
- Place the jug as centrally as possible in the microwave and shut the door.
- Take your time here as you don’t want to burn the soap, it will be unusable if you do! Be patient and take your time, working in short bursts.
- Heating the soap in the first 3 minutes, work in power bursts of one minute.
- Stir in between to help the base melt more evenly by distributing the heat through the shampoo base.
- After three minutes, reduce to 30-second power bursts.
- Again stirring in between and stopping when it is all molten and liquid.
Adding Fragrance and Colorant
- As soon as your shampoo base is molten and liquid, remove it from the microwave and set it aside to cool for a couple of minutes.
Adding Fragrance
- Then add your NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil. If you wish to add your own essential oils, you can add them at this point too.
- Now, I say ideally, because it is easier said than done, while you are adding fragrance and color and mixing them in, you want to try to avoid introducing any extra air or bubbles into the mix. As I said, easier said than done! Inevitably, you will always get some.
- You can try and remove some of these air bubbles by banging the jug firmly. Now remember, the jug is full of hot soap! You need to do it as carefully as possible and wear heatproof gloves. Tap the jug firmly on the counter a few times, to knock out as much air as possible before molding. We do this because tiny air bubbles can be problematic if your molds have fine details and lots of small crevices.
Adding Colorant
- Have you decided if you are making a single-colored soap, bi-colored or even multicolored?
- If you want more than one color, you can split the mix into portions and color each one separately. Bear in mind that each layer will need time to set before you can add the next. Unless you are marbling the colors with one another.
- In my own experience, I prefer liquid colors, I find them easier to use than powdered ones. I suggest if you are a beginner that you get to grips with liquid colors before advancing to powdered colors.
Molding Your Soaps
- Now it is an exciting bit! Molding your shampoo base into pretty shapes! All you need to do is pour your molten shampoo base mixture into your molds. Pour slowly and carefully to avoid any unnecessary air bubbles.
- You need to do this next bit really quickly. Grab that spray bottle filled with isopropyl alcohol or high-proof Vodka and spray the back of the soap. This bursts any surface bubbles and helps leave a clear, glossy surface on the back of the soap. This gives you a better final presentation.
- If you are layering your shampoo base, make sure you do this between each layer. Spray when doing the first set, and spray it again before pouring the next layer. This improves your adhesion rates and helps the layers join together more readily.
- Set the molds aside for a few hours and cover with a soft, clean cloth, don’t let it touch the shampoo base itself. It helps to protect your shampoo bars from dust particles.
Finishing Your Soap
- Make sure the shampoo bars are fully set and cooled before de-molding and de-mold really carefully.
- Straight away, wrap the soaps individually in a couple of layers of Saran Wrap or vacuum seal individual bars.
- Labeling is really important so always use a good quality oil and waterproof label and list all ingredients for obvious safety reasons.
How to use:
- Don’t skip your 24- 48 hour patch test.
- Now this is where to manage your expectations. It is not going to lather like a bottled shampoo full of detergent, it will be a much gentler type of lather.
- Work the shampoo bar into a lather on your wet hands to cleanse the hair, you need much less than you imagine. Use less than you would bottle shampoo.
- Rinse off thoroughly with clean, warm water. Thoroughly is the key here, make sure you rinse it all off and get your scalp nice and clean too. If you live in hard water areas, you may feel there is a bit of residue left (I have this problem, I have very hard water). Grab a liter jug and add 100 ml of Cider Vinegar top the rest up with warm water and use this as a final rinse.
- When transitioning from bottled shampoo and conditioner full of SLS to using solid shampoo bars the results, at first, can be disappointing because our hair feels stripped of all the silicone fillers used in commercial shampoos that make our hair feel soft and shiny. You’ll find in a few washes, things will improve and your hair will start to enjoy the transition and hold its own as it gets used to a new way of things. Keep at it, it takes a little time.
If your Conditioning Shampoo Bars look and smell like Cake or Candy, please keep them well out of the way of small inquisitive children and pets.
Bodacious Bath Bombs
Bath bombs are so much fun and beloved by many. They make wonderful gifts for the holiday season and if you are canny where you do your buying they can be very cost effective too.
I’m not going to lie to you, there is a knack to this, so be prepared with a little extra ingredients to account for the odd experiment! How to Make Bath Bombs with Essential Oils gives you the full low down about ingredients and plenty of extra hints and tips to get you started.
IFRA Safety
You can use the Soap option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your Bath Bomb formulations and recipes as it falls into the same category.
You will need:
- Selection of medium-sized bowls
- Measuring spoons/cups
- Stainless steel spoons
- Medicine dropper or pipette
- Small spray bottle
- Muffin tray, silicone soap mold or bath bomb two-part molds
Ingredients:
Note: buy a bit extra because you will make mistakes in this project.
- 1 ⅓ of a cup of Citric acid (2-Hydroxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylic acid) (Look in the canning aisle)
- 2 ⅔ of a cup of Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
- 2 cups of Cornstarch (Zea Mays (Corn) Starch)
- 1 cup of Fine Ground Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride)
- Up to 6 tsp Water (Aqua)
- Up to 6 tsp Sweet Almond Carrier Oil (Prunus Dulcis)
- 5 ml of NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
Optional:
- Colorant
- Glitter
- Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's guidance on how much to add and when and note where in the recipe it should be added.
Method:
Getting Prepared:
- If you are using a preservative, please follow your individual manufacturer's instructions.
- Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Fahrenheit (or its lowest setting) if you are using a metal muffin tray or heat-proof silicone mold to dry your bath bombs.
- Have all your things in hand and set out ready in front of you because you need to work fast at the mixing stage.
Hear Me On This:
You must be VERY careful how much liquid you add to your dry ingredients. Please be very cautious here and don’t get carried away. It can go from perfection to ruination in less than a drop. Not to mention that the ingredients can be fairly expensive, especially if you are making a larger batch.
If you choose to ignore this and get carried away, the chances of you standing there watching your beautifully fragrant bath bomb fizz away in front of your eyes, rise exponentially.
If this does happen, simply tip it into a jar and let it fizz away before adding a lid. Just chuck it in your next bath and you can still benefit from the ingredients, saving them from going completely to waste
Mixing The Bath Bomb
- Mix together all the dry ingredients, Citric Acid, Baking Soda, Cornstarch and Sea Salt ( and any powdered colorant or glitter).
- In a separate small bowl, mix the Sweet Almond Oil, half of the water, fragrance oil and any liquid coloring. (Note if your bath bombs keep failing it is because there is too much water in the mix, reduce the amount of water. If it feels too dry, add the rest of the water).
- At this point, you can either use the liquid mix in a medicine dropper or a small spray bottle. I prefer a small spray bottle that dispenses a really fine mist.
- It is here that you need to be VERY CAUTIOUS about how much liquid you add and you need to gauge it very carefully.
- You also need to be ready to mix it quickly together as it starts to fizz… get ready!
Adding The Liquid
Either - Spritz your dry ingredients with the spray bottle or dispense one drop at a time with your medicine dropper.
The dry mixture will fizz; you need to stop it by taking the back of a spoon and pushing it down to stop the fizzing process.
Quickly work the damp powder through the rest and do it as thoroughly as possible.
Cautiously, continue adding the liquid until your mixture starts to look crumbly, almost like damp sand.
The key point to tell if it is ready is that it will start to come together when pressed, and it will hold itself in shape. As soon as it does this you have enough liquid and can stop. You may have some leftover solution, you do not need to use it all.
It is getting this bit right that is the challenge. Don’t get disheartened if it goes wrong, tip it all in the jar and start again. Just don’t give up, you will find that perfect sweet spot. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself to do it perfectly the first time.
Molding Your Bath Bombs
- Take your muffin tray, silicone soap mold or bath bomb mold and oil it lightly with a bit of carrier oil like Sweet Almond. You can use your pipette/medicine dropper if that is easier to apply a tiny amount.
- Fill the muffin cups or bath bomb mold with the dampened mixture and press down firmly. Try using the back of a spoon to pack it in tightly; you want a nice dense mix, so don’t be afraid to press down really firmly on it.
- As soon as your tray or mold is filled either:
- Place the heatproof tray/mold in the oven, turn the oven off, close the door, and leave them for at least 45 minutes. Once cooled, remove them very carefully from the muffin cups.
- Or set aside in a warm, dry place to dry out and set up hard - this can take a few days depending on the size and shape of your mold. Remove it gently from the mold and allow it to harden for a further 48 hours before using.
- If you have a two-part bath bomb mold, please follow the manufacturer's instructions. Many of these molds are plastic and not suitable for use in an oven. However, there are some silicone ones that do allow this, so thoroughly read the instructions that came with your mold.
Don’t forget you can explore lots of different and exciting recipes and find Bath Bombs suitable for even the most sensitive skin in How to Make Bath Bombs with Essential Oils.
How to use:
- Always do a 24-48 hour patch test.
- Simply drop it into a warm bath and allow to fizz and dissolve.

Fall Inspired Togethers
I’m already missing the summer afternoons with my girlfriends having a long lazy lunch and maybe a stroll in the sunshine. As the weather turns, so does our attention to being inside more. But that does not mean that we have to stop having fun!
I have a couple of ideas here.
Taking Scentscaping To A Whole New Level
The first one I shall be expanding on over the coming weeks and have a whole article planned for you! We’ve talked about scentscaping but we have not talked about matching your scent to the food and drink you are consuming at the time!
Imagine getting together with the girls and/or boys, a relaxed coffee morning or afternoon tea, served with hot tea and coffee, coconut macaroons, squishy marshmallows and a millionaire's shortbread. Pop NO. 2204 in your diffuser and your aroma matches your food choices! Voila! Boost the experiential moments with your friends and family and make wonderful memories together.
Creating Together
Turn your get-together into a creation session as well. This is perfect for busy people, who can socialize and create all in one space. The beauty is that you can split the shopping list, preparation, and cost between you all too! Now that sounds like a plan to me.
Why not get together and make some Halloween or holiday gifts? Take the pressure off a bit. When there is a group of you it allows you to pool resources and stretch the cost between you. This can make it much more cost-effective and potentially offers you access to a bigger range of ingredients and better bulk buying prices.
It also allows you to have support as a group and learn together, or let someone with more experience teach you how to do it! Simple get-togethers like this are perfect for making soaps, candles, wax melts, and a range of cosmetics and toiletries. Don’t forget that projects like Room Sprays and Body Mists are super quick and easy to make as well.
Here are some links to a few projects that I think would translate perfectly to a group session:
- Wax Melts
- Bath Melts
- Moisturizers
- Room Spray
- Candles
- Massage Candles
Hopefully, this has inspired you with a few more creative ways to use the mouthwateringly delicious NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro

The Final Word
It has been an absolutely scrumptious week this week working with NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro. You will just want to sink into this mouthwatering confection.
Sweet Marshmallows, squish alongside Coconut’s tropical vibe, drizzled in sticky droplets of golden Honey. The Honey drips down into soft gooey Caramel strewn with nutty bites of Praline. Finally, hot coffee ribboned through with creamy Vanilla seduces us and encourages us to stay in its sweet, comforting embrace.
Try out the delicious Diffuser Blends and maybe get the girls together and have a creation session as well as sweet treats and a good old giggle.
Make the Conditioning Shampoo Bar and treat the kids to Bath Bombs. It’s such a delicious fragrance, I am sure you won’t run out of ideas on how to use it.
However you choose to use NO. 2204 - Inspired by: Coco Cabana by Sol De Janeiro, have fun with it and embrace its playful nature.
