Blending NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Fragrance Oil

Blending NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Fragrance Oil

NO. 77 is a wonderful fragrance oil for this time of the year. It has autumnal soft fruit tones, but is still fresh and bright enough to carry it through the rest of the year.

We have some interesting spaces that we can play with in the scent profile and there’s plenty for both beginners and more experienced blenders to achieve with this one.

There are so many ways that we can go through all the notes and create completely different effects with NO. 77, I’m struggling to pinpoint where to start! So many choices!

So, I’m going to flip this on its head and present this to you in a different way this week. It is a bit more prescriptive than my usual offerings, but it should offer you amazing results.

NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Blending Suggestions
Take NO. 77 and add the following oils to create a whole new theme.
How much you add and where you can build your blending skills is up to you.
Theme Autumn Fruit Autumn Flowers Unctuous and Sweet Mysterious and Masculine
Top Notes Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Roman Chamomile Pink Sugar Lemongrass,
Lemon Eucalyptus
Heart Notes NO. 2200 Helichrysum
Rose Geranium,

Base Notes NO. 1200 Frankincense Kentucky Bourbon Oud

Autumn Fruit

Add luscious bright Orange tones into the top notes, fill the heart with complimentary autumn fruits, and deepen the base with rich, smooth golden Amber.

Autumn Flowers

Think of the colors of autumn, straw yellow, deep gold, bright oranges, and russets. Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum offer those almost dried flower-like aromas. Rose Geranium keeps it fresh, lively, and feminine alongside the Freesia notes. Frankincense brings a resinous depth to create balance and an extra dimension.

Unctuous and Sweet

Uplift the top notes with sweet summer fruits like Raspberry and Strawberry. Lace the heart with comforting and mouth-watering notes of Maple Syrup, Honey, and Milk. When it comes to the base you need some balance to cut through that sweetness and make it a bit more grown up. Try alcohol notes like Bourbon or Rum.

Mysterious and Masculine

Start zingy, fresh, and uplifting with lemon-scented oils like Lemongrass and the green notes of Lemon Eucalyptus, even a Lemon Tea Tree would work here too. The heart is all about the Fig to complement the Plum and make it deeper and richer. Oud brings it sumptuous depth to balance it all out beautifully.

Final Blending Thoughts

It’s good to look at things differently sometimes and try a new approach. If nothing else it helps build your skills and develop new and exciting techniques. Never be afraid to swap things up!

Follow This Blending Framework:

Top Notes

The top notes open with the bright zesty aromas of Bergamot and Lemon, brightened with the greenery of Clary Sage.

You can do plenty here, but just keep that all-important balance in mind.

    1. Autumn Fruits: Ramp up the autumn fruit aromas with Spiced apples, Pears, Figs, Grapes and Plums, and lighten it with soft fruit like Blackcurrant and Raspberry.
    2. Citrus: Warm things up with Mandarin, Sweet Orange, and Tangerine. Create more uplift and elevate the profile with Bergamot, Lemon, and Lime.
    3. Floral: Challenge yourself to choose flowers that fit the autumnal profile. Try  Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum.
    4. Green: Add in more green notes, but the right ones!  Try a mere dash of Scotch Pine and Dwarf Pine, especially towards the holiday season. Otherwise, stick to bright fresh green like Sweet Basil.

Heart Notes

The heart space is a confection of fruit, flowers, and wisps of musk. We need to exercise a little caution here to not fight the delicacy of the Freesia and the mouthwatering fruit notes.

If you fancy a challenge, build on creating the floral notes.

    1. Floral - NO. 77 needs judicious blending with floral scents. Try lighter and brighter with Rose Geranium or go a bit deeper with Honeysuckle but don’t drown out the Freesia in the process.
    2. Spice - There is little to no spice in this scent profile, so we can add some to warm things up a touch. Ginger, Nutmeg, and Cardamom are all great choices.
    3. Food and Drink: We can play on the mouthwatering notes and add rich sugars and creaminess, like building the perfect dessert! Introduce creamy sensations with Oatmeal Milk and Buttercream. Add sweetness with Maple Syrup and Honey.

Base Notes

The base notes are a dash of smooth golden Amber, the warmth of Cedarwood and rich ribbons of creamy Vanilla.

    1. Spice: Think warm and comforting. Try the heady delights of Cinnamon Bark and Clove Bud.
    2. Woods: Stick to the lighter woods of Amyris, add more Cedarwood and a touch of mystery with wisps of smoke.
    3. Earthy: Vetiver and Patchouli can give us that autumnal earthiness that we want.
    4. Food and Drink : Rum, smokey Bourbon and Burnt Sugar notes work well here, as will a rich caramel.

Diffuser Blends With NO. 77 - Plum Nectar

Before we begin…just check you have the right product to your diffuser.

IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends

Diffuser Blends appear in IFRA Category 12, in this particular category, NO. 77 - Plum Nectar fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions.

Method:

    1. Into a small measuring jug,  measure out your fragrance oils and/or essential oils carefully.
    2. Now you want to mix them all together well.
    3. A bottle that is kept as clean and as oil-free as possible will help your label to stick better, so use a funnel, please.
    4. Using the funnel, decant your diffuser and blend mix into the 10 ml dropper bottle.
    5. If you use a quality silicone spatula, it will help you to get every precious morsel of oil into the bottle. Which is much more sustainable for the planet!
    6. Your bottles contain undiluted oil, presenting a significant safety hazard. Therefore, good clear labeling on an oil and waterproof label is crucial.
    7. For obvious safety reasons, clearly mark the label as ‘UNDILUTED’ and list all of the ingredients. Don’t forget to date your label, and add a 12-month expiry date too.

How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:

  1. You all have different diffusers, so our first advice is to always consult your manufacturer's instructions. It will give you specific guidance on the diffusers that you seek.
  2. To dilute or not? Again, consult your manufacturer's individual instructions for their specific guidance.
  3. How To Use Vinevida Oils is packed with generalized advice on using fragrance oils in different types of diffusers and may offer a starting point for some of your questions.

Juicy Recipes With NO. 77 - Plum Nectar

NO. 77 - Plum Nectar is a really useful and versatile fragrance oil that performs wonderfully through a wide variety of applications with its fresh, juicy, and fully rounded aroma.

I don’t know about you but I have a pile of freshly laundered summer clothes ready to be consigned to the spare wardrobe until the warmer weather rolls around again. When we spend so much on our clothes, it pays to look after them properly, so let's focus on how to do that today.

First, we are going to create some Wardrobe Fresheners that you can hang in between your clothes to keep them smelling clean, fresh and as good as new.

Then, we are going to create a Linen Spray designed to deter moths from your precious natural fiber clothes.

Wardrobe Fresheners

These are ridiculously simple to make. So much so, you will wonder why you’ve never done it before!

I had a quick peek online at various offerings on the commercial market and I quite literally fell off my chair in shock….. And horror! People are paying $70 (plus postage) for a scented block of wax. SEVENTY dollars! (I’m guessing $60 is for the brand name alone).

The skinflint part of me thinks it’s a bit obscene and the entrepreneur part of me feels like I’m missing a trick! I can’t quite get over it. I’ll tot up how much this will cost you, approximately, at the end.

I’m using Paraffin Wax here because it is the best for achieving a strong throw of scent and retains the fragrance longer. It is also good and hard and will stand up to being moved around as your rifle through your wardrobe.

Now you don’t need fancy molds, you can tip it into a parchment paper lined tub and just cut it into rectangles and poke a hole through for a ribbon. So please don’t worry if you feel you don’t have the right kit.

IFRA Safety

NO. 77  in IFRA Category 12 has no maximum safety restrictions. This means that in 100mg of molten wax, you can use as much NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Soaps and Candles fragrance oil as you like. However, we recommend not exceeding 10% to preserve the integrity of the wax.

You Will Need:

    • Double Boiler (or a scrupulously clean tin can in a saucepan of water)
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Molds (or a parchment paper lined tub or baking tray)
    • Hanging Ribbons or Waxed Cords
    • Plastic sleeves, if selling or for gifts.
    • Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

For every 100 mg of Paraffin Wax, use up to 10 ml of NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil.  I recommend trying 3% to start with.

Optional: If you have issues with clothes moths, try adding these essential oils to keep them at bay. 30 drops of Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara) and/or 30 drops of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).

Safety:

    • Do not hang directly against your clothes or linens, allow some space, as this is an oil-based product and may cause staining.
    • I often pop mine in a ziplock bag and poke a few holes in it to keep the wax away from my more precious clothes and linens

Method:

    1. Melt your Paraffin Wax in your double boiler and as soon as it is melted, remove from the heat and cool a little. If you have an infrared thermometer, 195F is the sweet spot.
    2. Add your fragrance oil and your essential oils, if using. Mix thoroughly for a couple of minutes to evenly disperse the fragrance oils through the wax. It takes longer than you think so give it time.
    3. Pour the molten wax into your molds or a parchment paper-lined tray or tub.
    4. Once the wax starts to set up, you can embed a hanging ribbon or cord into the wax. Alternatively, you can poke a hole through once fully set.
    5. This would also be time to add any decoration you wish, try dried flowers, glitter, and maybe a crystal or two.
    6. Set aside and cover with a soft clean cloth, making sure the cloth does not touch the wax surface. This will help to keep it dust-free.
    7. Once fully set and totally cooled, carefully de-mold.
    8. If you used a tub or tray as your mold, cut your shapes using a warm knife.
    9. Poke hanging holes and add a hanging ribbon or waxed cord.
    10. If gifting or selling, present in air-tight plastic covers and label with an oil and waterproof label. You must list all ingredients clearly for safety reasons.

How to Use:

    1. As this is an oil-based product, be aware that essential oils and fragrance oils may stain clothes and linens, so be judicious about their placement and spacing.
    2. Consider sealing into a ziplock bag, and poke a few holes through to keep potential oil stains at bay.
    3. Hang in your wardrobe and refresh as needed.
    4. You can simply refresh by remelting the wax and topping up the fragrance oils. Depending on the quality and cleanliness of your wax, you should be able to do this several times.
    5. Save any wax past its best and use it to make an odds-and-ends candle or natural firelighter. There's no need to waste it.

Approximately, How Much Will This Cost Me?

I promised to tot this up for you so you can see how much money you can save.

I can get a kilo of Paraffin Wax here in the UK for about £7/ $9.30 which includes postage. It is a comparative price in the USA too.

In 1 kg of wax I want to use 3% (30ml) of fragrance oil

120ml of VINEVIDA NO. 77 fragrance oil costs $18.99 (not including P&P which varies)

Therefore, 30ml will cost you $4.75.

1 kg of wax will make approximately twenty Wardrobe Fresheners weighing 50 gms each.

$9.30 + $4.75 = $14.05 divide that by 20 pieces = SEVENTY CENTS!!!!!!!!

SEVENTY CENTS, people!!!!!! Not SEVENTY DOLLARS!!!!! Can you see why I fell off my chair?

Make you own!

Moth Be Gone Linen Spray

Moth Be Gone Linen Spray

NO. 77 - Plum Nectar has Cedarwood as one of its base notes and we can capitalize on this and enhance it to help us ward off those pesky Clothes Moths.

I can’t tell you how much Cashmere, Silk, and Wool I have lost due to clothes moths in the past. They seemed to really get to work when I put things away to store as the seasons passed. A few years ago I developed this marvel and they HATE it! Consequently, my precious clothes and natural fabrics seem to be untouched.

We MUST…

Like we saw last week, in the section about Room Spray, the biggest issue people have with sprays are:

    1. Oils float on the surface, which leaves globs of oil behind on surfaces and linens. This can be solved by using a dispersant which becomes extremely important when we make a Linen Spray, designed to be sprayed on our clothes.
    2. The water turns green with algae growth, which can be addressed by using a preservative.

Therefore, to keep your favorite clothes protected properly, and to look after them in the best way possible, we MUST use both a dispersant and a preservative.  However, we can use both of these in plenty of other projects to justify the purchase.

IFRA Safety

NO. 77 in IFRA Category 10A has maximum safety restrictions of 10.1%.

This means that in 100ml of Linen  Spray, you can use up to 10 ml of NO. 77 - Plum Nectar Soaps and Candles fragrance oil. However, 3% is usually more than enough for this particular project.

You can use the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your own formulations and recipes in the same category.

You will need:

    • Measuring jug
    • Bottle funnel
    • Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
    • Oil and waterproof label
    • 200ml spray bottle

Ingredients:

Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's guidance (Don’t skip this)!

Method:

    1. Check your preservative, follow your individual manufacturer's instructions for how much to use, and note when in the process of adding it.
    2. Measure out your dispersant in line with manufacturers' guidance, as brands vary.
    3. Add the Soaps & Candles fragrance oils and essential oils to the dispersant and mix everything together.
    4. Add the Distilled Water and Preservative, and combine well.
    5. Double-check the oils have fully dispersed. Make sure that no oils are floating to the top. If there are, simply add more dispersant, mixing until the oils disappear.
    6. Use a funnel and decant the Linen Spray into your spray bottle.
    7. Affix the spray nozzle and cap tightly.
    8. On an oil and waterproof label, clearly list all of the ingredients for safety.
Add extra safety instructions to the label:
      • Shake the bottle well”
      • “Do not spray near the face and eyes

    How to use:

      1. You don’t want oil droplets on your fabrics, so as an oil-based product, always do a patch test in an inconspicuous place on precious fabrics before use.
      2. Just double-check no blobs of oils are floating on the top of the surface. If there is any you need more dispersant, go and add it now!
      3. Shake the bottle well before use. This makes sure that everything is evenly dispersed.
      4. Don’t spray it on your face. Or anyone else's for that matter! Check before you spray, which way the nozzle is facing.
      5. This Linen Spray is NOT suitable for your animals' bedding or the areas where they rest or sleep.

    Safety:

      • Always be sure to spray away from the face and body.
      • Do not spray near animals or their bedding.
      • If you get any onto your skin, wash off immediately with soapy water.
      • If the spray gets into your eyes, rinse with clean tepid water.
      • If any irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled container with you.

Protect Surfaces and Furnishings From Fragrance Oil

Disclaimer: As oil-based products, fragrance oils may stain polished and painted surfaces, furniture, and furnishings. Please take steps to protect surfaces before use.

Always carry out patch tests in inconspicuous areas, especially on your more precious surfaces and linens.

    Professional Blending  Tips and Techniques

    Professional Blending Tips and Techniques

A handful of quick and easy industry hints and tips make all the difference to your blending. We’ll have you blending like a professional in a heartbeat.

    Balancing Act

Being able to define and maintain a scent profile’s balance is key to your blending success.

However, it is also something that comes with both practice and experience, so be patient and kind to yourself as a beginner.

Like many fragrance oils, NO. 77 is balanced mostly in the heart notes, but here the base notes help to anchor the balance too. The top notes offer uplift and elevation, as they rightly should.

However, don’t fall into that presumption that the balance always sits in the heart notes, that is not always the case.

Sit with your fragrance for a minute and assess it in several ways. See if you can define and discern where its balance point lies. Can you tell where it is sitting in the notes?

    What’s Creating The Balance?

Once you discern the position the balance sits in the scent profile, you can ask the next important question.

‘What creates this balance’? Can you make out which elements create this sense of balance? Or is it just an amalgamation of all of them? Unfortunately, this is something you need to learn to define yourself. It’s a hard thing to teach you, remotely at least!

Your next key question evolves into - ‘In what way can I introduce new harmonizing accords, whilst maintaining the balance of the scent profile’? It is in these tiny aromatic spaces, where your blending success lies. As soon as you learn to define and maintain that all-important balance, you will be able to create harmonizing accords. You can then go on to create your own amazing bespoke blends.

However, always keep at the forefront of your mind that balance is key to creating exciting and successful blends.

    Patience Is A Virtue

When it comes to blending, patience is your best friend. This is also where I make the clear distinction (and declaration), that my wisdom is based on experience.

Don’t let excitement get the better of you and go at blending hell for leather.  Slow things right down and rein yourself in. The world of fragrance should be savored and a place where you can completely immerse yourself in the glorious process.

Teach yourself a new habit of working a couple of drops at a time, fostering patience You would dispense a couple of drops - then stop - mix it - test it, and so on. You work in tiny steps until you attain the perfect balance.

It is very hard to make a mistake when you work in this disciplined manner, usually if you feel you have gone too far, it’s easy to rebalance too, because it is just a tiny amount. It’s a sure fire way to avoid making expensive mistakes, like I have in the past. Learn from my mistakes.

Regardless of whether you are using precious, rare and expensive essential oils or cost-effective, abundant ones, make this way of working your standard practice.

    Scent Strips

Scent strips offer us an extremely cost-effective evaluation tool. It helps us to standardize how we evaluate our blends. Again, irrespective of the rarity and cost of our essential and fragrance oils.

Exposing your blend to the air and oxygen gives you a more accurate idea about the developing scent. So get it out of the bowl/bottle and waft in the air. You actively want to assess it when it is reacting with oxygen and the other air elements. It offers you a better idea of how it will behave and perform in your Diffuser Blends, or even a Reed Diffuser.

It never takes long for beginners to appreciate the marked difference a scent strip makes in evaluating fragrances. It will always offer you a more accurate assessment of the developing scent and also help you avoid making expensive mistakes.

    Preserve Your Nose

What do I mean, preserve your nose? You need to avoid going nose blind.

Your brain processes the aromas from your nose, however, it can get lazy, gets less efficient, and eventually can just stop processing the scents you are trying to assess. This is called going ‘nose blind’.

When you go nose blind, you lose the ability to evaluate your scent effectively, but you can mitigate this by taking regular breaks.

    Avoid going nose blind by:

      • Every twenty to thirty minutes, take a ten-minute break.
      • Reset your brain and try to get some fresh air.
      • Take more regular breaks if you are working with heady, narcotic, or intoxicating essential oils.

    The Final Word

    The Final Word

It has been a week full of delicious nuances working with the elegant aroma of NO. 77 - Plum Nectar fragrance oil.

Fresh, green notes of Clary Sage dance with the zingy zest of Bergamot and Lemon. The heart space is structured on the gorgeous nuances of delicate Freesia and Light Musk and the richness of Dark Cherry and Plumptious Plums. The sophisticated smooth notes of Golden Amber meld with rich Cedarwood before ribbons of creamy Vanilla tie it all together beautifully.

You’ll love NO. 77 with its eminent versatility and the creative scope it offers. Enhance the fun and fruity or maybe play of those elegant and sophisticated notes, for something much more serious and sumptuous.

Have fun making Wardrobe Fresheners and Moth Be Gone Linen Spray. When you pull out your summer clothes from storage next year, they will be bright, fresh, and in perfect condition.

However, you choose to use NO. 77 - Plum Nectar, enjoy its beautifully autumnal fruity and woody aroma. We think it's rather elegant and extremely versatile here at VINEVIDA.
