Blending Recommendations

Blending Recommendations

I always get asked, “Well, how would you blend this”? I always enjoy answering these questions because there are so many exciting combinations, that I never tire of them!

If you are a beginner, it can be challenging to know where to start. That’s what I am here for, to help you identify ‘gaps’ in the scent profile. You can fill this gap with new accords developed from harmonizing oils. These accords of harmonizing oils could be made up of essential oils, fragrance oils or a combination of both.

As you learn, you’ll notice that some fragrance oils are easier to construct blending frameworks for, than others. Some may have many gaps, and some very few at all. But in my experience, there is always somewhere you can add your own unique touch. As soon as you start to grasp the ideas and principles and put them into practice, you’ll find your mastery increasing.

Blending NO. 1018

No. 1018 has a wide array of notes and is quite a complex blend to start with. However, there is still plenty of room to add harmonizing accords and gorgeous scent notes in the right places.

The top notes are watery based fruits, designed to feel cool and make your mouth water. Notes of Ozone - the scent of Air and Sea Salt pair to make us believe we are by the sea.

There is plenty of space to play with.

The heart notes are quite unusual though, with that Lavender and Violet combination. ‘Purple scents’ uplift and elevate but Black Pepper and Cinnamon kind of do the opposite by tempting us to snuggle down in their warmth. So we need to exercise a little caution in terms of retaining that balance here.

We have some strong, resounding base notes with Musk and smooth Amber. Then these deepen off to Vetiver, Cedarwood and Sandalwood. It is already pretty sophisticated, so again,  adapting to this area requires thought.

Top Notes

Top Notes

The first notes you get or those of the fragrant watery fruits of Cucumber and Melon. Let’s just pause for a moment to consider what sort of experience the original perfumer intended to convey. It's fresh, bright, watery and fragrant. Then Ozone notes and Sea Salt are introduced to evoke the water, and fresh, pure air.

You could add to that effect with marine and oceanic notes for a stronger sense of the ocean. You add to that ‘fresh air’ effect too, by adding a menthol based essential oil like Spearmint or Eucalyptus.

You could also play with the watery aspect of fragrant fruit notes too. There are a couple of ways.  The first way would be to add more citrus notes like Lime, Lemon or Grapefruit to make it sharper and uplift it with a cleaner profile.

Alternatively, you could introduce more warmth and depth by going tropical and adding Pineapple, Mango or Papaya. If you do go this way then you would also want to echo this same tropical theme through into the heart notes too, otherwise you could send the blend off balance.

Summary of Essential Oils

Choose sharp, refreshing citrus notes, like Lime, Lemon and Grapefruit.

Add a sense of fresh air with the menthol notes of Peppermint, Spearmint, or Eucalyptus

Additional Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

Why not try the wateriest fruit of them all with NO. 1121-Inspired By: Watermelon Lemonade By Bath & Body Works? It has that extra note of sugar, which adds a touch of sweetness that blends well with the warming spices.

Heart Notes

Heart Notes

The heart notes are an unusual choice of purple flowers and spice. Herbaceous Lavender and sweet Violet dance with the fruitiness of Black Pepper and warming Cinnamon. It’s a balance we need to be cautious with.

We have the option in the top notes to add more tropical fruit notes and we can echo the tropics here with notes like Lychee, Pomegranate and Raspberry. To maintain the overall balance, pair them with one complimentary tropical flower like Jasmine, Hibiscus or Ylang Ylang.

We can play with gender balance too. Flip it to a more masculine feel by adding strong green notes like Ranvesara and Galbanum. This would work really well if you opted to add menthol in the top notes.

Add more warmth and spice like the floral/fruity notes of Pink Pepper, or orange tones of Cardamom. These would add extra warmth and deepen that heart into something more mysterious.

Suggestions for Essential Oils

Add tropical tones with Jasmine or Ylang Ylang

Spice things up in the heart with warming notes like Cardamom and Coriander.

Add some fresh greenery and brighten the whole profile with Ravensara and Galbanum.

Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

Add an extratropical dimension with NO. 1407 - Inspired By: Sunkissed Hibiscus By Nest

Add the warm, woody fruitiness of NO. 1206 - Inspired By: Philosykos By Diptyque along with a dash of spice for a masculine twist.

Base Notes

Base Notes

There isn’t a great deal of room to play in the base notes since you have strong, heavy hitters already.

I’d plump for more spice with warm and extra depth like Clove and Star Anise to add a bit of extra dimension. (To play with the idea of extra dimension,  consider not only what is complimentary, but also  what is missing.) We could also flip this summer fragrance completely on its head by adding in more wintery notes like firs, pines and balsams.

Essential Oil Recommendations

Balance that fresh, watery introduction by adding warmth with spices like Star Anise and Clove. Be careful not to overwhelm that balance if you want to retain that fresh air feel.

Flip summer on its head and create a winter wonderland with Dwarf Pine, Peru Balsam and Scotch Pine. Add softer wood notes with Copaiba Balsam

Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

Try the luscious spicing and deep darkness of NO. 3100 - Inspired By: Tobacco Vanille By Tom Ford.

Go for the woody pine notes of NO. 1400 - Inspired By: Birchwood Pine By Nest and NO. 1115 - Inspired By: Leaves By Bath & Body Works for that awesome summer to winter flip. This makes it super versatile throughout the year.

Final Blending Thoughts

I hope these ideas and suggestions on how to ‘construct’ your blends offer you something to experiment and play with.

Consider what you like best about it, the clean watery introduction, the unusual heart or the complex base notes? What do you want to enhance or play down?

If you don’t care much for the introduction, change it! If you love the heart but feel it needs more flowers, add them! If the warm base lights your fire, add another element to add interest like Vanilla.

Have fun with NO. 1018, whether you use it on your own or create your bespoke blends by blending with its other VINEVIDA essential oils and fragrance oils.

Fragrance
Notes
Original Scent Profile Ideal Companions
Top Cucumber, Melon, Ozone, Sea Salt Kaffir Lime, Lemon, Lime, Mango, Papaya, Pineapple, Watermelon, White Grapefruit,
Dwarf Pine, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Spearmint
Heart Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Lavender, Violet Black Pepper, Cardamom, Ginger, Nutmeg, Pink Pepper, Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Lychee, Raspberry, Sour Cherry, Hibiscus, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Bay, Galbanum, Ravensara, Scotch Pine, Peru Balsam, Copaiba Balsam, White Camphor
Base Sandalwood, Musk, Dark Amber Amber, Amyris, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clove, Oud, Sandalwood, Star Anise, Vanilla

Follow This Blending Framework

    1. Into the top notes add watery fruit notes like Watermelon.
    2. Start a tropical slant with Payapa, Pineapple, Lychee or Mango but pair it with a tropical flower note like Jasmine, Hibiscus or Ylang Ylang in the heart notes.
    3. Introduce uplifting citrus notes with a cleanser sharper edge like White Grapefruit Lemon, and Lime.
    4. Introduce a fresh air effect with Menthol notes. Go for Peppermint, Spearmint or Eucalyptus, if you are heading for wintery greenery all through, consider White Camphor too.
    5. The heart space already has an unusual composition of floral and spice notes so don’t try to get overly complex here. Go tropical, spicy or green.
    6. Introduce some tropical fruity spices like Pink or Black Pepper.
    7. Ramp up the green notes in the heart space to brighten and uplift the overall profile with Ravensara, Bay or Galbanum.
    8. Tip it towards more masculine heart notes by adding warm spices like Ginger or Nutmeg.

Ramp up the warmth in the base notes with Cinnamon, Clove and Star Anise.

    1. I love the idea of adding a whole new element that totally flips the seasonality on its head taking a summer scent into winter with pines, firs and balsams.

How To Work To the Best Effect

    1. Learn to blend patiently. Even if this means experimenting one drop at a time. Working in this way you allow yourself the chance to avoid making mistakes. By working one drop at a time, stopping, mixing and testing, you avoid making mistakes.
    2. Always try to gauge the scent using a scent strip. Get it out of the bowl or bottle as it makes a noticeable difference when evaluating your blends.
    3. When you follow these guidelines, there are fewer chances to make mistakes and potentially expensive ones at that! This is especially important if you are using costly essential oils and absolutes.
    4. While it is a fairly foolproof method, it requires discipline and patience! Which I am absolutely abysmal at too, so you’re in good company. However, I have learned from my rather costly mistakes and you can learn from my mistakes too.
    5. Give your blending nose a break every 20 minutes for at least 10 minutes and come back to it. It stops you from going nose blind and you get a more accurate gauge of the scent.
    6. Generally, maintaining the balance of the original scent is key to the process, and in doing so will improve your chances of success. However, you can flip NO. 1018 in several ways and be quite perverse with the balance and still end up with amazing blends.

However, hear me when I ask you to follow this framework to achieve incredible results and get successful outcomes with your diffuser blends.

IFRA Guidelines for Diffusers

Diffuser Blends appear under IFRA Category 12. In this category NO. 1018  fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions.

Method:

    1. Diffuser Blends offers easy entry projects for exploring and experimenting with fragrance oils for the first time.
    2. Begin by reading the recipe through. Always note the differing proportions used in the recipe, it will build up over time to offer you extra clues in the process and build your experience.
    3. Measure out all of your fragrance oils and essential oils carefully.
    4. Combine your oils in a small measuring jug and stir well.
    5. Always try to keep your bottle as clean and oil free as possible as it helps your label stick better.
    6. Decant your diffuser blend, using a funnel, into a 10ml dropper bottle.
    7. Use a good quality silicone spatula to get every drop of oil from the jug and funnel into the bottle. Don’t waste a drop!
    8. You must always get into the habit of labeling your bottles because they contain undiluted oil and present a safety hazard. On a waterproof and oil-proof label, list all of the ingredients used.
    9. Date the label too and annotate it as ‘UNDILUTED’ for obvious safety reasons.

How To Use These Diffuser Blends:

    1. It will always be our first advice that you consult your individual manufacturer's instructions to get their specific guidance on your diffusers.
    2. Some manufacturer’s guidance states that you will need to dilute your blend, please follow their individual instructions.
    3. Did you throw your instructions away with the box? How To Use Vinevida Oils gives generalized advice, but always try to follow your manufacturer's instructions where possible.

Room and Body Spray Recipes

This month NO. 1018 invites you to its summer hideaway by the sea and encourages you to lie back, relax and let your cares go for a while. Fresh in watery fruits, ozone and salt notes that meet purple florals and spice before that earthy musky and woody finish. It is a scent that is perfectly suited to both home and topical products, so let's choose one of each this month

Now, there is a question that pops up time and again on our Social Media, that we can address here and now with these Room Spray and Body Spray recipes.

Why Can’t I Use a Room Spray as a Body Spray?

The answer is really simple, generally, the IFRA safety guidelines will allow you to use more fragrance oil in a Room Spray than is safe for you to apply to your skin. It’s too strong, basically.

We’ll compare some of the IFRA Safety maximum dilution rates of popular fragrance oils for you, so you can see the obvious differences.

Maximum IFRA Safety Dilution Rates
Fragrance Oil Room Spray
IFRA Category 10B
Body Spray
IFRA Category 2
NO. 1018 24.01% 0.91%
NO. 35 - Fruit Loops 3.7% 0.11%
NO. 10 - Lush Ice 8% 0.8%
NO. 33 - Fresh Cut Roses No Restrictions 3.43%

See what I mean about how they vary enormously? This is why you must always check your IFRA safety data and never presume that you can use a Room Spray as a Body Spray.

Let’s make both this month so you can see the differences between them and let’s address some of your other popular questions as we go.

Room Spray

Room Spray

We are going to keep these simple this month and just use NO. 1018 to scent this easy Room Spray.

If you want to get more adventurous and use some of the blends above, by all means, do so but note that Diffuser Blends are IFRA category 12 and this project is 10B, so you will need to work out your safety data for yourself.

IFRA Safety

NO. 1018  in IFRA Category 10B has maximum safety restrictions of 24.01%. This means that in 100ml of product, you can use up to 24 ml of NO. 1018 - Inspired By: Summer Breeze & Ritz Carlton Hotel Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.

You can use the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your formulations and recipes.

Why Can’t I Just Mix It With Water?

You can’t just mix your fragrance oil with water and expect it to work. Oil and water don’t mix! Therefore, you need to add a dispersant to help them both mix together.

Just adding water and oil creates a breeding ground for bacteria in the water and it could just turn green if you don’t add some form of preservative.

Using too much fragrance oil causes more problems than using too little!

Read about these points in depth in Crafting The Perfect Scent: Your Guide To Room Spray With Fragrance Oils.

You Will Need:

    1. Measuring jug
    2. Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
    3. Funnel
    4. 120 ml / 4 oz spray bottle
    5. Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Safety:

    • Spray away from the face and body, should any get onto your skin wash off immediately with soapy water. If it gets into your eyes, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled container with you.
    • As oil-based products, fragrance oils may stain polished and painted surfaces, furniture, and furnishings. Please take steps to protect surfaces before use. Always carry out patch tests in inconspicuous areas, especially on your more precious surfaces and linens.

Method:

    1. This is very easy to do, definitely not rocket science!
    2. Measure out your Distilled Water into the measuring jug.
    3. Add the Dispersant and Preservative and combine well.
    4. Add the NO. 1018 - Inspired By: Summer Breeze & Ritz Carlton Hotel Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil and mix everything together.
    5. Check the oils have fully dispersed and no oils are floating to the top. If there is, try adding a bit more dispersant. Mix until the oils disappear.
    6. Decant into your spray bottle using a funnel.
    7. Add your spray nozzle to the bottle and cap tightly.
    8. List all of the ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
    9. Don’t forget to add the additional instructions to “Shake the bottle well” and “Do not spray near the face and eyes”.

How to Use:

    1. Get into the habit of shaking the bottle well before use. This will make sure everything is evenly dispersed and no blobs of oils are floating at the top.
    2. Check before you spray, which way the nozzle is facing, and don’t spray it towards the face.
    3. Always patch test your Room Spray in an inconspicuous spot on soft furnishings, especially precious ones. You don’t want oil droplets on your fabrics.
    4. Do not spray Room Spray towards your pets or animals and avoid spraying the areas where they rest or sleep.

Body Spray

Body Spray

Like Room Sprays, you have to use some form of dispersant and preservative when making Body Sprays. The most common mistake that people make when making Body Spray is not including these two things.

Try our super simple Body Spray, which has an alcohol base. The alcohol acts as both your preservative and your dispersant.

If you are sensitive to alcohol or looking for an alcohol free alternative or more ideas check out - How To Make Body Spray With Essential Oils And Fragrance Oils.

DO NOT use the Diffuser Blends above as they are not skin safe. I will give you a couple of different blends below to keep things interesting!

IFRA Safety

NO. 1018 in IFRA Category 2 has maximum safety restrictions of 0.91%.

This means that in 100ml of product, you can use 0.91 ml of NO. 1018 - Inspired By: Summer Breeze & Ritz Carlton Hotel Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.

When we start to work in increments of less than 1 ml it helps to work in drops. The amount of drops is always approximate, as it depends on the weight and viscosity of the oil itself.

1 ml is roughly equal to 20 drops. Therefore, 0.91ml is approximately 18 drops of NO. 1018.

You can use the ‘Deodorant’ option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your formulations and recipes.

You will need:

    1. Large and small measuring jugs
    2. Stainless steel stirrer
    3. Funnel
    4. 120 ml Spray Bottle
    5. Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional - An additional preservative.

Other Blend Options:

Option One: Tropical Vibes

This has a more tropical vibe to it with heady notes of Frangipani, Coconut, Orange Blossom and Gardenia, Amber and Tuberose.

In 120ml of Body Spray Base (above) add the following:

Option Two: Forest

This flips it towards a more masculine slant, but I also feel with the right balance it’s perfectly gender neutral. With forest notes of White Pine, Fir Balsam and Birchwood, Musk and Amber.

In 120ml of Body Spray Base (above) add the following:

Method:

    1. If you are using an additional preservative, please consult the manufacturer's instructions.
    2. Carefully measure the Perfumer’s Alcohol into the large measuring jug.
    3. Add the fragrance oil and the Glycerin and mix well to combine.
    4. This is the time to ensure there is no fragrance oil floating on the top. If there is, get rid of it by adding a dash more Perfumer's Alcohol, mix and let settle and continue in this way, until it disappears.
    5. Top up the level to 120ml /4 fl oz with Distilled Water.
    6. Decant into the spray bottle using a funnel, add the spray nozzle and cap tightly.
    7. Label clearly on an oil and waterproof label, and list all ingredients for obvious safety reasons.

How to use:

    1. Always carry out a 24- 48 hour patch test before using it for the first time.
    2. Spray over your body in a light mist, taking care not to spray it on the face or eyes.

Safety:

    • Do not spray near the eyes and face. If you do spray it in your eyes, rinse with clean, tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

      The Final Word

      The Final Word

It has been relaxing this month working with the unusual and complex aroma of NO. 1018 - Inspired By: Summer Breeze & Ritz Carlton Hotel Fragrance Oil.

I have loved the bright, fresh, invigorating notes of Ozone and Sea Salt notes that transport you to the watery depths of the ocean. The water elements echoed in the cool crisp introduction of succulent Cucumber and refreshing Melon.

Heart notes bloom with the unusual and complex combination of Lavender and deep purple Violets with swirling ribbons of warming spice. Fruity Black Pepper and unmistakable Cinnamon

Dance into the base notes of smooth Amber, alluring Musk, earthy Vetiver and warm woods of Cedarwood and Sandalwood.

Discover the vacation hideaway of NO. 1018. Here at VINEVIDA, we love how it encourages you to escape, relax and kick back for a while.

Build your blending skills and experiment with the diffuser blends. When you make them all, it builds on your skills and blending experience.

Make some Room Sprays and Body Sprays, and make a couple as gifts, the holiday season will be upon us before we know it!

We love the relaxing notes of NO. 1018 - Inspired By: Summer Breeze & Ritz Carlton Hotel Fragrance Oil. We hope you will love its unusually complex nature as much as we do!
