What Are Bath Milks With Essential Oils?
I think Bath Milks are underrated. They are often seen as old-fashioned and out of vogue, but have you ever tried one?
You are most likely to have seen them presented as small sachets of powder that you add to your bath. They are usually made with Powdered milk and contain ingredients like Salt, dried herbs, and flowers and fillers like Corn Starch.
I have found the commercial offerings to be underwhelming, both in the amount of product included and in their possibility. They seem almost half-hearted and decidedly lackluster.
Homemade bath milk with Essential Oils offers you such a rich potential and I urge you to go exploring!
Winter Skin
At this time of the year, it is easy for your skin to get dried out and parched with the dry heating in our homes. Once it starts to dry too much, it just gets irritable and itchy and drives you slightly nuts.
Bath Milks are the perfect antidote. They are full of lactic acid which acts as a gentle cleanser, cleaning and brightening the skin. They can be packed full of vitamins and minerals that your skin will just drink up. Not to mention those soluble fats that can soothe your skin beautifully. Before your head spins at the use of the word ‘fat’, it is no different from the fats you use in Carrier Oils all the time!
Bath Milks with Essential Oils are an ideal way to soften and moisturize dry skin and I find they are ideal for people with more sensitive skin.
You can completely design your bath milk with Essential Oils to suit your skin's needs. It gives you a chance to perfectly tailor something to your exact needs. It’s not hard either!
It does, however, need a little planning.
Dry or Wet Bath Milk With Essential Oils?
You can make dry or wet bath milk with Essential Oils, it’s completely up to you.
Dry mixes can be stored for some time whereas fresh Bath Milks with Essential Oils need to be used up within about 24-48 hours. There are benefits to both that we will explore as we go.
Dry
Bath Milks with Essential Oils are perfect for making in larger batches and storing or giving away as gifts.
It is generally made with a base of dried powdered skimmed milk, though I feel it is easier to buy whole milk powders in the US than it is here in the UK. You can also buy dried Coconut Milk as a base.
You have the opportunity to add to your Bath Milks with ingredients like salts, sugars, and even grains like Oats. It is not unusual to add dried flowers, herbs, and spices to the mix too.
I have even seen these commercial dried mixes bulked out with things like Ground Rice, which can also be beneficial to your skin. Corn starch is also widely used to bulk up Bath Bomb recipes to bring down the cost. While you can use them if you wish, they would not be my first choice of ingredients in my homemade Bath Milk with Essential Oils.
Wet
Wet Bath Milk with Essential Oils will need to be used up quickly and can be made with most kinds of milk, from Cow’s Milk and Goats Milk to nut and plant milk like Coconut.
You can add in salts and sugars just like you can into a dried mix, it allows you to use wonderful skin softeners and humectants like Honey and Glycerin. Adding Magnesium Flakes can help you to relax and sleep more soundly.
When using herbs and dried flowers it allows you to infuse them into the liquid milk first and extract all the goodness you can get from the plant material.
You are less likely to add bulking out materials to these types of Bath Milks with Essential Oils, unless, of course, you add water!
Why Make Bath Milk With Essential Oils
If you have never tried Bath Milks with Essential Oils then perhaps this is just the product for you to have a go at. It is simple enough to make, but it also gives you amazing control over the process.
Skin Soothing
One of the things that I love about using Bath Milk with Essential Oils is that they soothe my skin wonderfully. When my skin is dry, irritated, and itchy, then this is my go-to product.
Dried milk is full of lactic acid and soluble fats that can help cleanse, soften, and soothe the skin and also remove the need to use soap, (which can be drying itself).
It is gentle enough to use on your face too, many people in India, often use Milk Powder Masques to clarify their skin. That sounds like another article in the making to me!
Control Over Ingredients
I make my own Bath Milk with Essential Oils because as I said, I am usually quite underwhelmed with commercial offerings and that's when you can find them. They are few and far between, and that is a shame because they are beautifully gentle products that are beneficial for your skin.
It also gives me the chance to choose ingredients that suit my hypersensitive skin. It allows me to choose natural ingredients over chemical ones, enabling me to use ingredients for a natural product.
Sustainable Choices
By making my own Bath Milk with Essential Oils, allows me to research my ingredients a bit and choose ingredients that align with my eco-conscience.
I can even buy organic milk and dehydrate it myself if I want to. For those lucky of you to possess freeze dryers (I’m very envious by the way), this is an ideal project to use up that excess milk when you have a glut. Simply freeze-dry it and set it aside for this use.
I purchase organic Oats, Coconut Milk, and Carrier Oils, from companies that have sustainability and their communities at the heart of what they do.
What’s important to you? What ingredients would you like to have control and choice over?
Balancing The Budget
The brilliant thing about Bath Milks with Essential Oils is that they can be made VERY cheaply, but they still seem like a luxurious and decadent product to use.
I always feel a bit like Cleopatra bathing in milk scented with the magical fragrances of the Nile.
If you are on a super tight budget, but fancy something spectacular, you can create something truly wonderful and luxurious feeling, with very little indeed. The key here is to exercise thoughtful choice in both your base ingredients and your choice of Essential Oils. Read on for some extra tips and tricks on this matter.
If you have a bit more cash to splash, then upgrade your Essential Oils and plump for something a little more sensational.
Innovative Ideas
Don’t be afraid to experiment with Bath Milks with Essential Oils, there are no real hard or fast rules other than keep the dry stuff dry, and the wet stuff wet!
You have a rare chance to not be constrained by rules or expectations and to just sit down with a variety of ingredients and try something new.
You never know, you might stumble on something amazing and be the next big thing!
Hopefully, we can coax the reputation of Bath Milks with Essential Oils out of the doldrums and give it another heyday.
If it was good enough for Cleopatra, then it is good enough for me!
Best Ingredients For Bath Milk With Essential Oils
When making Bath Milk with Essential Oils, there will be wet and dry ingredients and you may just need to drag out your common sense when deciding which ones to put together.
Don’t add any wet ingredients to a mix you wish to store dry! Except for a tiny amount of Carrier Oils to dilute the Essential Oils of course!
Dried Powdered Milk
Here in the UK, you can only really get dried Skimmed Milk Powder these days, but I know in most places in the USA you can get whole milk too. Look for one without additives and with some of the fat content left in it.
You can also get dried and powdered Coconut Milk from Asian supermarkets and online suppliers.
Now, the inventive among you might surmise if you can use nut milk then surely you can use nut flour? My advice is to try a teaspoonful in a glass of warm water and see how it reacts. Does it just clump and lump or does it readily dissolve and give off ‘milk’?
Go with the ones that dissolve, and steer away from the clumpers!
Fresh Milk - Including Nut Milk
You can use all PURE plant milk and nut milk as fresh Bath Milks with Essential Oils, provided your skin is suited to them. Just because they suit you to drink, does not mean your skin thanks you for bathing in it, so do a patch test first.
Many commercial plant and nut milks have additives and additional ingredients, like Palm Oils and I suggest you avoid them unless they are as pure and natural as possible.
A certain brand of Oat Milk lists these as its ingredients - Oat base (Water, Oat (9.8%)), Soluble Corn fiber, Sunflower oil, Calcium (Tri-calcium phosphate), Sea salt, Stabiliser (Gellan gum), Vitamins (B2, B12, D2). While some of these things are good for your skin, not everything is. It would be better to just chuck a handful of organic oats into your mix instead of the Oat Milk.
If you are vegan and object to using animal milk, that’s fine, simply swap them out for the plant milk of your choice. Ideally, make them yourself, so they are free from other unwanted ingredients. When it comes to dried recipes, try Coconut Milk Powder or dehydrate your own homemade Plant Milk and turn it into a dry powder.
People who have nut allergies should not use nut milk.
Salts and Minerals
When you want to kick back and relax those muscles, you cannot beat using salts and minerals like Magnesium Flakes and Epsom Salts. They are the ideal ingredients to create a highly efficient Bath Milks and relaxer after a long day.
They are exceptionally good in dry mixes and you can use them in wet mixes too. Any salts that don’t dissolve immediately, will, as soon as they hit the warm bath water.
For any blend you want to use for relaxation, inducing calm, or de-stressing - add some form of salt.
For soothing muscles and sore joints choose Epsom Salt, for help sleeping choose Magnesium Flakes.
Sugar and Honey
Sugar and honey are not the first things we think of when it comes to our skin, but they bring plenty to the party, especially in the softening department.
Honey, like Glycerin, is a humectant which means it will draw moisture from the air and bring it into your skin. If you have dry skin, using one of these humectants is ideal to attract and lock in moisture.
I have a pot of Manuka honey in my bathroom for just this purpose, and for pimples, spots, cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and wound healing… need I go on?
Carrier Oils
If you are going for skimmed or plant milk, you may just want to up that ‘fat’ contingent. (Yes, I used the F word, unashamedly too)! You can do this by adding a Carrier Oil. It soothes your skin and helps to keep it nourished, soft, supple, and glowing.
Now, if you are cautious and use a fair amount of salt or sugar in your dry mix, you can put your Essential Oils in your Carrier Oil and mix it in with your salt or sugar, which will absorb some of it and you can get a relatively dry mix. However, in reality, it will need to be used a lot quicker than a totally dry mix because it will seep through the other ingredients too!
We have to recommend that you add something to dilute or disperse your Essential Oils because they are being added to bath water. Small amounts of Carrier Oil will soak into your salts and sugars for dry mixes and Castile Soap acts as a dispersant for wet mixes.
Best Essential Oils For Bath Milk
This is where you need to ask yourself “What do I want my Bath Milks with Essential Oils to do”?
Do you want something to:
- Relax
- Destress
- Induce sleep
- Uplift
- Enliven
You need to choose Essential Oils that will deliver those particular actions. Let's have a look at some suggestions.
Relax
Often, we want to relax, but not so much that it sends us to sleep. Perhaps you want to wind down after a long day, but you still have dinner to make, kids to sort, and a partner to catch up with your day.
Turn to calm, but still vibrant Essential Oils like Mandarin, Bergamot, and Frankincense.
Destress
Mad Day? In need of de-frazzling and de-stressing? Mandarin is your best friend here if you still have things to complete in your day, as is Bergamot.
If you have a chance to kick back and unwind, go for the heavy hitter of Vetiver to help you let go and relax.
Are you that stressed that you are twitchy? Marjoram should be your go-to Essential Oil with its nervine properties.
You can also turn to the more ubiquitous Essential Oils like Lavender and Roman Chamomile but give other Essential Oils a chance to impress you first!
Induce sleep
This is just where you want to plump for Lavender and Roman Chamomile for your Bath Milks with Essential Oils because they are tried and tested.
However, blend them with Essential Oils like Marjoram to soothe those twitchy legs, Patchouli to turn off that active mind, and Vetiver for deep relaxation like no other. I also find Vetiver improves the chances of more refreshing and restorative sleep, especially with cumulative use.
Uplift
This is where the Citrus oils tend to come into their own with their bright zingy nature. Mandarin, Bergamot, and Sweet Orange Essential Oils, will all bring their uplifting qualities to your Bath Milk with Essential Oils.
If you need an uplift of mind then try those incredible herbaceous Essential Oils like Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, and Spearmint that bring in their breath of fresh air and raise you up.
Enliven
When you want Bath Milk with Essential Oils that bring you to life, focus on Essential Oils that both uplift and enliven for that extra boost.
Sweet Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Lemongrass, and Eucalyptus are all wonderful choices for uplifting you and helping you to get things moving. If you want to thoroughly motivate yourself, go with the warm spices of Ginger and Black Pepper.
Final Note On The Best Essential Oils For Bath Milk With Essential Oils
Essential Oils like Lemongrass, while beautifully uplifting, are known skin sensitizers so you need to carefully follow the IFRA guidelines for maximum safety dilution rates. Lemongrass has a safety dilution rate of just 0.70%.

You might as well make a decent amount as the dry mixes tend to store quite well and it is good to be generous with your helpings when you add them to the hot water of your bath.

- Mixing bowl
- Small measuring jug
- Silicone spatula
- Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
- Preserving jar with a rubber seal
- Jar Funnel

Method For Dry Bath Milk With Essential Oils:
- Take your Salt and Sugar and combine them in the mixing bowl.

No.1 - Skin Super Soother
This is ideal if your skin is dry and irritated and needs soothing, moisturizing and nourishing. It is the perfect antidote to the effects on the skin by artificial heating and can bring swift and welcome relief to parched skin. Use Whole Milk powder if you can get it. You want the extra fat and Lactic Acid content here to help soothe and cleanse the skin. If you cannot get dried Cornflower petals, simply add more Oats.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Dried Milk Powder
- 1 cup of Salt - I recommend Pink Himalayan here
- ½ cup of Light Brown Sugar
- ¼ cup Oats
- ¼ cup Dried Cornflower petals

No.2 - Blissful Sleep
This is just what you need to help you drift off blissfully into dreamland and to wake feeling rested and refreshed. The dried flowers will bring their herbal actions and benefits so try and include them if you can. Essential Oils can have a cumulative effect and I can personally testify to that effect using Vetiver. The more regularly I use it, the better its effects, so consider making it a regular to your new sleep routine.

How To Use Dry Bath Milks With Essential Oils:
- Dissolve a small amount in warm water and do a 24-48 hour patch test before using. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin or skin allergies.
- Simply add your dry mix to the bath when the warm water is running and once to temperature, swirl to help the salts and sugars to dissolve and distribute the milk.
- If you have included dried plant matter, like dried petals, you can tie up your Bath Milks with Essential Oils in a square of muslin and hang it from the running tap or place it in the bath water. I have even used an old sock and tied the open end. Give it a good squish to encourage all the ingredients to dissolve.
- Soak in the beautifully warm and fragrant water for at least 20 minutes to allow the Essential Oils to have their full effect.
- Empty the muslin square or old sock (the contents left should compost) and then rinse the fabric well, dry and it is ready to use again. Run through the washing machine after every third use.
Wet Recipes For Bath Milks With Essential Oils
When I make fresh Bath Milks with Essential Oils, I tend to make at least 1 pint. It may seem a lot for just one bath but you do want plenty of the mix in the bath for it to be able to have a half-decent effect.
It’s not quite as much as Cleopatra would have, but nothing is stopping you from making and using more! Just make sure you are still within your IFRA safety recommendations.
The addition of Castile Soap acts as a dispersant, you can use Witch Hazel or a High Proof Alcohol should you prefer.

- Funnel
- Waterproof Label
Method For Wet Bath Milks With Essential Oils:

- Add your Salt and/or Magnesium flakes into the milk. It is ok if they don’t dissolve, they will as soon as they hit the warm bath water.

- Label, listing all the ingredients clearly, for safety reasons and date.
- Patch test right away.
- Refrigerate and use within 24-48 hours.
No.1 - Skin Salvation
I don’t mind this time of year, but my skin has a particular loathing for it. Winter brings this vicious itch that just won’t be sated no matter how much you scratch it and it does my skin no favors at all. This is when I turn to super soothing, skin-calming Bath Milks with Essential Oils like this one.
Use Goat's Milk if you can get it, it is worth the difference. It is also worth thinking ahead and making your own Oat Milk overnight for this recipe. Don’t skip the Honey here either, it’s essential to the soothing properties.

No.2 - De-Stress and Decompress
This is wonderful if you’re feeling a bit frazzled and overwhelmed. In our modern lives, things come at us left right, and center all day, and sometimes we need to just stop. Stop doing things, stop the noise, and stop our minds from going at full pelt.
The Essential Oils will help calm your body and your mind. I particularly like Mandarin and Patchouli as a blend to help you decompress. It helps you to rest your mind but also process the day so it is not running around your head all night keeping you awake.
Now, Celery Juice can oxidize quite quickly, so use it within 12 hours of pressing it. If you cannot be bothered to juice it or you don’t have a juicer, simply use more milk and salt instead.

Massage is a wonderful way to help boost your circulation, aiding in skin cell renewal, but it is also a wonderful way to relax yourself. Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
How To Use Wet Bath Milks With Essential Oils:

The Final Word On Bath Milks With Essential Oils
Get your Essential Oils out and have a go at making Bath Milks with Essential Oils. Let’s raise them again and extol their inherent virtues. They are an ideal way for us to find a way to stop, rest relax, and take time out of our fast-paced modern world full of stressors and demands.
Don’t be constrained by too many rules, other than keeping the dry stuff dry and stick to the IFRA safety data. Push the boat out, think outside of the box, and try something new. Come up with your exciting recipes, tailormade to your exact needs.
It is a wonderful product for those of you, like me, with sensitive skin. Do you look longingly at those highly fragrant and tempting displays of bath bombs, bath melts, and shower gels and wish that you could? Yeah, me too.
Then I come home and whip up one of these instead, especially at this time of the year, when my skin tends to dry out and become more irritated than usual. Nothing is stopping you from doing just the same.
Budget Friendly
I am keenly aware that many of you are working within tight budgets in this cost-of-living crisis. So this is where you need to be canny. Buy milk when it is reduced because it is close-dated and freeze it. Or simply just pour the milk itself straight into your tub, just as it is!
Buy cheap and plentiful Oats designed for porridge, you can get a large amount for a good price and you can always eat what you don’t use! You can also use it to make Oat Milk for your Bath Milks with Essential Oils too.
Look for deals on Salt, the price varies enormously. I shop in a particular store here in the UK because 1kg of Pink Himalayan Salt is £1 or $1.27. In my local Supermarket, 200g is £3 or £3.81, that’s a whopping £15 or $19.09 per kg! There’s no difference in quality at all. What would you pay?
If you have to buy Essential Oils to make these projects on a budget. Go for Essential Oils that have a range of versatile functions. If you had to squeeze me for just three, I would buy Mandarin, Lavender, and Patchouli. They all have a range of actions and a little always goes a long way with these Essential Oils, you don’t need much for a wonderful effect.
Wet Or Dry?
Well, that is totally up to you!
Dry Bath Milks with Essential Oils store for longer and you can just pop your jar on the side of the tub and use it over the month.
Wet Bath Milks with Essential Oils need a bit of planning as you need to knock it up on the same day or the day before you plan to use it.
Both are quick and simple to put together and use. Try both and see what suits you best.
Whichever you choose, I am sure you will find these Bath Milks with Essential Oils will encourage you to design, create, and use your own. Have fun!
