Why Create Aromatherapy Sets With Essential Oils
There are many great reasons to create aromatherapy sets with essential oils. I could wax lyrical about all the benefits all day, but I’ll rein myself in and keep things succinct. We have a lot to cover here.
Ditch The Chemicals
Learning how to make a range of different aromatherapy products means slowly replacing all the products you might usually purchase from the store.
Once you learn how much control that gives you, you will never go back. My first love is throwing all those unnecessary, sometimes harmful, chemicals out. Then bring in all that natural goodness.
Learning just how harmful our current products are can be a great incentive to start making your own natural products. Check yours out via the Skin Deep project from EWG. How do they measure up?
Tailored to You and Bespoke
Today, clients want things designed just for them, bespoke, one of kind…couture, even. Perhaps you would like that too? Once you master the basics of the recipes, the world is your oyster, and you can go on to create your bespoke products.
I have very sensitive skin, which drove me to create my soaps and skincare. The shower gel is one of the worst things that I can use. It immediately sets my skin itching, so I make my own.
One of my favorite things is to create a luxury product just for me, using my best essential oils. It pays to treat yourself occasionally.
You can design sets of products entirely tailored to your needs, be it for your skin or to improve your mood.
With careful research, you can tailor them for friends, family, or customers and clients.
Going Deeper For Health
I have familial Hypertension - High Blood Pressure.
I use Ylang Ylang in my daily bath to help balance that. I have done it for years. I also put it into my moisturizer, hand cream, and sometimes my diffuser. I want to repeat it as an essential oil over my aromatherapy products for this reason.
In my old age, I am developing arthritis in one of my knuckles. My poor Grandmother suffered terribly with arthritic hands and fingers. Just the memories of the pain that used to create for her are enough for me to want to try to avoid it. Juniper seems to break down lactic and uric acids associated with arthritis. This is another essential oil, along with Lavender, that you will see pop up in unexpected places, like my body lotion or hand soap.
I put the essential oils I NEED for my health and well-being into the products I use MOST often: Moisturizer, body butter, hand soap, and hand cream. It is like drip-feeding the essential oils I need the most over the course of the day. It is like my natural equivalent of taking a tablet morning, noon and night.
Your mind is already ticking about how to use this technique for your well-being. Creating aromatherapy sets with essential oils has huge benefits and much potential in this area.
Changing the Mood
Much research has been done on how inhaling essential oils affects our mood. Just using the art of inhalation alone can rapidly and effectively change our mood. Combine this with the absorption of essential oils, creating a very powerful tool.
Aromatherapy sets designed for mood elevation are seen even in the tiniest stores. Products like air fresheners, candles, and diffusers are everywhere, bringing in big bucks for many companies. However, just because something says aromatherapy on the label does not mean chemical-free.
This is where you can make your own and control every ingredient you use.
You can create your own aromatherapy sets designed for inhalation for a fraction of the price and create a product that will contribute to your well-being.

What Are Aromatherapy Sets?
Aromatherapy sets are a collection of two or more products intended to go together.
For instance, you suddenly see hand care sets everywhere during the holiday season, compromising hand soap and hand cream. Gift sets of body lotion and shower gel fill those holiday shelves for both men and women.
The problem is that most of these are made with cheap, poorly sourced ingredients laden with chemicals and potential toxins.
Genuine handcrafted aromatherapy sets contain pure essential oils and usually focus on good quality, well-sourced, natural-based ingredients.

How to Design Aromatherapy Sets
It is All About the Who, Why, What, and When
It is all very good just randomly producing products and putting them together into an aromatherapy set, but it could look incohesive and, heaven forbid, unprofessional.
Careful consideration and good planning need to go into your aromatherapy sets, and a few select questions can help you do that.
- Who am I aiming my product at? Is it for men, women, and everyone?
- What is the purpose of the product?
- Why would someone buy and use this?
- What other reasons do people have for buying and using this product?
- When will they use this product?
- Where will they use this product?
- Is it suitable for children?
- Is it safe for everyone?
Demographics
Gender-Specific?
For example, take two seemingly related products - a sleep spray and a scented candle in the same sleepy essential oil blend. Consider the demographics (your market); they are both quite different.
Men are much more likely to try and buy a sleep spray than a scented candle. However, women are more likely to be attracted to a set like this.
It may be more prudent to design a set for both men and women. It pays to consider your target market before pairing products into a set. More and more products are moving to a gender-neutral selling point to meet popular demand.
After all, who would have thought 30 years ago that we would see men in adverts for foundation and makeup? It indicates the changing face and viewpoint of our world today.
Relatable
You also need to take into account the potential age of your clientele. Are you making products desirable to just young people, or will your products appeal to all age ranges?
Simple packaging changes can make the same product appealing to a wider market. Clever branding and packaging can widen your market immeasurably.
Individual Needs
When putting together skincare gift sets, you must carefully consider your demographics and packaging branding.
For one, you are working with a market where the larger manufacturers spend millions of dollars on market research and focus groups. It pays to look at what they are doing and take a cue from them.
You need to target the products to the right age group in skin care because your skin needs very different kinds of treatment and essential oils as you age.
Men might need moisturizers that consider they also have facial hair to condition and maintain.
Considering your customers' needs should be the cornerstone of your design process.
Fit for Purpose
Measurable Benefits
When designing your recipes and blends, you must try them out and get others to try them too. There is no point in throwing something together in a bowl, plopping it into a jar with a pretty label, and hoping the customer likes it.
These products need to give the user some benefits. People like to see ‘measurable’ results, like smoother, younger-looking skin, feeling more relaxed, or experiencing better sleep.
You must always be mindful of your customer's satisfaction, especially if you want them to come back and buy from you again.
Where?
This is not the most obvious, but where customers use your product will often inform the choice of packaging.
Nothing is more annoying than using a product in the bath or shower to find the water dissolves all the ink on the label. Would you benefit from investing in some waterproof labels?
Glass is a fabulous choice for sustainability and is infinitely recyclable. Where possible, you will see that I advocate using glass as a receptacle in most recipes.
However, if you use products with more volume, like bath oil, shampoo, or conditioner, you don’t want to be handling these with wet, slippy hands and creating danger in the bathroom. Consider putting a pump top on them or in recyclable plastic bottles/pouches.
Shelf Life
The products have to be fit for purpose. Therefore, you must consider the product's longevity, especially if you plan to sell and store them over time.
You will need to consider using preservatives to elongate your products' life. Where and how to store them safely must also be considered.
Pair a product that is likely to last for a few weeks in a set with something that lasts 18 months, then stick it on a storage/store shelf for 6 months.
Safety First
Making products for your home makes it easy to get a bit lax on labeling. I am as guilty as the next person.
If you start to make sets for gifts, you are relinquishing control of those products, how they will be stored, and most importantly, who has access to them. There have been cases of accidental swallowing of all manner of aromatherapy products. For this reason, meticulous and accurate labeling is vital.
You must indicate if the product is unsafe for children, pregnant women, and people with certain conditions.

Final Thoughts
Please now recognize how to put a professional aromatherapy gift set together with confidence and panache.
Understanding who your target market is, their gender (if appropriate), age, and most importantly, their individual needs. All of this should inform your design process from concept to finished product.
Exploring the right products to collate together is key to success here. Consider if you are widening or narrowing your market when considering pairings and collections.
Get the safety and labeling right, and it should leave you, your friends, family, or customers with no worries.
Many gift sets are donated or wasted after the holiday season because people either cannot use them or don’t like them. Research your target market, even if it is only your mother-in-law, and define your gift selection with a shrewd, sustainable approach.
Making what people like and WANT is easier than you think. Have fun creating aromatherapy sets with essential oils. I must dash. I have soap to make for my Aunt’s holiday hamper. She’s put an order in!
