What Is Dry Oil?

Dry oil is simply a terminology used in the beauty and cosmetic industry. All it means is that once the oil is applied to your skin, it will not leave that oil-slick sensation and it absorbs fully and quickly.

A wet oil is simply an oil that takes that much longer to absorb and may feel heavier on the skin. They are still packed with nourishing ingredients just like dry oils are.

What Are The Benefits of Using Dry Body Oil?

Pampered Skin

Pampered Skin

When you use dry oils they deeply moisturize your skin and they help to lock in that all-important hydration in your skin.  They are always very lightweight and therefore, quickly absorbed. This means that they are far less likely to leave any oily residue on your skin, leaving you feeling greasy, uncomfortable, or dancing around the bathroom trying to dry it off before dressing.

It also happens that many of the dry oils are beneficial for those who have oily or acne-prone skin. They are considered to be more soothing types of Carrier Oil and they are generally, less likely to cause irritation or skin breakouts

Dry oils are great at this time of the year when we start to experience more dry or flaky skin because they can help moisturize and soften our skin as well.

Moisturizing, softening, soothing, lightweight, and fully absorbed - sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Hair

Hair

While the title of this article is Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, it can be used on your hair too.

With just a few drops you can smooth your frizz and tame flyaway ends, all while deeply nourishing and conditioning your precious locks.

It’s wonderful for thick, dry hair but use less if your hair is thin and prone to greasiness, avoiding the roots helps too.

You’ll be able to ditch buying Cuticle Oils when you have made your own Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils because they can simply double up and be dual-purpose.

It’s always better for the planet and our bathroom cupboard space when we can get more than one type of application from a product, and here you get THREE amazing ways of using it.

Why Make Your Dry Body Oil With Essential Oils

Serving Your Skin’s Needs

It was my own very sensitive skin that drove me on the journey to create my skincare using my aromatherapy knowledge and skills. 30 years later here we are. I’m still creating the vast majority of my skincare from pure and natural ingredients.

If you have skin ‘issues’, making your own Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils can be a way to help get on top of some of them. This time of year as soon as the heating starts to go on across the Northern Hemisphere, skin starts to dry out and often becomes itchy and flaky too, especially on the legs and face.

It makes sense to create your own Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, laced with nourishing Carrier Oils and Essential Oils full of active properties. Perfectly designed to target and address your skin’s needs.

It is so easy to create and design something for yourself that will do everything you need it to, rather than pulling something off a store shelf, that will only do half a job.

Balancing The Budget

I’m always mindful that we are all on different budgets, especially at this expensive time of the year. Creating your own Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils allows you to stick within your given budget and still have something wonderful and highly effective at the other end of the process.

Just because an ingredient might be classed as a budget ingredient does not mean in any way that it is inferior or less effective. Often, I buy Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from the food section of our local supermarket or World Food Store. It is a quarter of the price of buying the cosmetic version and frankly does the same thing for my skin.

Be canny and shop about, you can get some good deals when you start to think outside of the box. The same goes for Rosewater and Orange Flower Water.

If you do have a bit more of a budget to play with and can afford a little more, don’t fall into the trap that bulk buying is best here. Carrier Oils can go rancid quite quickly, you are much better off buying a better quality Carrier Oil, in a smaller amount, in this instance.

Club Together

If there are a few of you in your social circle who like making handmade gifts at this time of the year, is it worth clubbing together? Carrier Oils and Essential Oils can be utilized for many exciting gift projects.

It might allow you to pool your resources to buy a more expensive bottle of Rose Essential Oil for example. You simply split the price and you all have a small amount. That way you still get access to the luxurious ingredients, in a more cost-effective way for you.

It also allows you access to those bulk buying prices for Carrier Oils. Since you're splitting it into smaller amounts, you diminish the chance of larger amounts getting wasted because it went rancid on you.

Conscience Choices

Making your own Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils allows you control over every single ingredient. You can choose organic ingredients that have been sustainably grown and sourced if that is what you want. You can choose Fairtrade from producers and suppliers that support their local communities.

You can choose what receptacles you use and what packaging you want if they are for gifts. I have a vintage glass pot on my bathroom window that gets filled with all manner of lovely face and body moisturizers. I use it time and again and simply wash it well between uses.

I have jars that have been refilling for years…and years. They are still going strong, I might have replaced the tops a couple of times.

If you are making Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils just for yourself, do you have a lovely bottle you can put it in? That you can use time and again? If they are for gifts, could you use scrupulously clean and sterilized recycled bottles?

Whatever your preference, there are choices to suit every eco-conscience.

Best Carrier Oils For Dry Body Oil With Essential Oils

Nut Allergy?

Nut Allergy?

Now, when you start making Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, it has happened before that people with nut allergies have used nut oils without thinking and have been surprised when they have an allergic reaction. If you have a nut allergy,  do NOT use any of the nut oils.

If you happen to be unsure which Carrier Oils are derived from a nut, There is more information on the individual web pages for the Carrier Oils on the website.

Can I Use Any Carrier Oil?

I always like to do some research before writing an article for you. Often, I find glaring gaps in GOOD information out there for you.

I came across a homemade body oil with Coconut oil and Sweet Almond Carrier Oil and it was being advertised as a Dry Body Oil recipe, which it simply is not. Both of these Carrier Oils are considered ‘wet oils, along with oils like Olive oil and Castor oil.

When you set out to learn how to make Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, make sure you know the difference between wet and Dry Body Oil.

Choose Carrier Oils To Suit Your Skin Type

With so many excellent Carrier Oils on the market for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils; just where do you start? The answer is simple, start with your skin type and choose both Carrier Oils and Essential Oils that suit you.

Looking at the best recommendations for all skin types, these Carrier Oils will help get you started:

A ‘Wet’ Oil Worth Inclusion

Argan Carrier Oil (Argania Spinosa)

Argan Carrier Oil is probably one of the most popular Carrier Oils found in Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils. However, it is considered a ‘wet’ oil in itself.  It is often included because of its complex and varied benefits. It’s ideal for a tip-to-toe experience, as you can use it on your scalp and hair, as well as your body.

Packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants (Omega 6 and 9) they make up almost 80% of Argan’s composition. It’s a powerhouse of Carrier Oil that can soften the skin with its intensive nourishment. It plumps, refines, and smooths the skin, which can help you look younger if that is what you want.

While it is a wet oil, it has earned its place here in your Dry Body Oil with the Essential Oils formula. Just make sure it is less than 40% of the overall composition to keep the skin feel of the final product right.

Dry Carrier Oils

Rosehip Carrier Oil (Rosa Canina)

Rosehip Carrier Oil is ideal for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils because it is stuffed full of Linoleic Acid - which is another one of these Omega-6 fatty acids (Also known as Vitamin F).

It is used in the beauty industry widely for plumping the skin and refining the complexion. It has a major role in offering strength to the skin and enhancing its protection.

It is also used commercially for cosmetic applications and treatments that protect the skin from environmental damage and premature aging.

It is jam-packed too with luscious Vitamin C, one of the magic ingredients in anti-aging preparations, along with other antioxidants.

It’s pretty potent stuff, so don’t use any more than about 10% of your overall recipe ratio.

Grapeseed Carrier Oil (Vitis Vinifera)

Grapeseed oil is a by-product of the winemaking industry. Once all the juice is extracted from the grapes the skins and seeds are left and so it makes for a more sustainable choice in the long run. Make sure you choose cold-pressed Grapeseed Carrier Oil for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, for the best quality for you and the Earth.

It is particularly good for those who have oilier skin as it is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t block your pores.

As a Carrier Oil, it is extremely light and thin. This very light viscosity helps it to absorb easily. However, people like using Grapeseed on their face and body because it does not add that oily sheen to the complexion.

It’s chock full of all those Omega chain acids that we like to see, which can help to reduce hyperpigmentation and even out the tone and appearance of the skin. It’s also packed with nourishing and soothing vitamin E. Stuffed to the gunnels with polyphenols, helping with gorgeous skin conditioning and potentially, faster wound healing.

If you experience eczema, psoriasis, or acne it can be a good choice just on its own for you.

It is widely used across the aromatherapy industry as a restorative for the hair and scalp. When used in a scalp massage it is reputed to promote hair growth and help minimize hair loss.  It beautifully softens and smooths the hair and is ideal for a dual Hair and Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils.

Grapeseed does not have a long shelf life, so buy in small quantities and don’t store products made with Grapeseed oil for too long.

Avocado Carrier Oil (Persea Gratissima)

I fully admit it, I have a bottle of Avocado oil that shuffles between the bathroom and the kitchen quite interchangeably. An example of canny buying to serve more than one purpose, proving that food-grade oils are also ideal for use on your skin.

Avocado oil has quite a heavy texture and thicker viscosity, despite this, it still has an amazing skin feel and absorbs well, potentially, better than most. However, due to the ‘thickness’ of the oil, we recommend not using more than about 40% of your overall percentage of Avocado oil in your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils.

Tradition has it, that Avocado oil has been used for improving skin condition and for stimulating hair growth for thousands of years. It was extremely revered by the Meso-Americans as part of their ancient culture.

Here at Vinevida, we think that the wonderful unctuousness and richness of avocado oil are ideally suited to those with more mature or post-menopausal skin. It is widely renowned and used across the industry for improving and retaining elasticity in the skin. Research has cited an ‘increase in collagen synthesis’ making it ideal for smoothing out those wrinkles.

I like it when I have very dry skin and need something a bit ‘more’, perhaps, it is that heavier texture, fast absorption, and deep cell penetration at work? I also like it when I have inflamed skin or need it for its wound-healing actions.

Like Grapeseed it helps to make an ideal dual-purpose Hair and Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils. It contains trace elements and minerals like Magnesium and Potassium which are reputed to help seal the cuticle cells of the hair. This sealing effect helps the hair appear shinier as it is smoothed beautifully. This can also help to prevent dry and brittle hair from breaking.

Sesame Carrier Oil (Sesamum Indicum)

Sesame oil is perhaps not the first Carrier Oil that you will think of when designing your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils. However, please do consider this beautifully lightweight Carrier Oil. Of course, we use the wonderfully fragrant toasted Sesame oil for our Chinese cooking at home, buy the untoasted version if you’re bothered about smelling like a piece of Sesame Toast.

I like it for rejuvenating the skin and helping to bring it to life with vitality and verve. It is of course like most Carrier Oils, jam-packed with incredible vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Full of active compounds like vitamin E, phytosterols, and lignans, they help fight those pesky free radicals in your body. Over time, this may help you to reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases.

Like many of the other Carrier Oils we have looked at today, Sesame oil has a healthy dosing of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids. We already know that these help to nourish, repair, and protect the skin.

The constituents of Sesame oil also have useful, natural, anti-fungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sesame oil is popular in Ayurveda for Indian Head Massage, so if you are looking for oils that will make those versatile dual Hair and Dry Body Oils with Essential Oils, here is yet another choice.

Other Notable Dry Body Oils

When you design your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, take a look at these ‘dry’ Carrier Oils too. They may better suit your skin type and needs:

    • Sunflower - (Helianthus Annuus)
    • Safflower - (Carthamus Tinctorius)
    • Camelina - (Camelina Sa Tiva)

Best Essential Oils For Dry Body Oil

Best Essential Oils For Dry Body Oil With Essential Oils

One of the first design questions for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils should be, “What do I want it to do”?

Is your homemade body oil recipe simply for pleasure or are you trying to address some of your skin’s needs too?

It’s easy to tailor your daily body oils and Essential Oil blends to target your exact needs. Perhaps, you use your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils last thing at night and want to use it to help you sleep better too. Maybe, you need the opposite and a morning boost of Citrus gloriousness to start the day.

If your skin has more complex needs because of conditions like eczema, psoriasis, keloids, or acne, you can use Essential Oils to help address some of the symptoms of those conditions as well.

I’m going to share a handful of some of the most versatile Essential Oils that you can use in your perfectly tailored and homemade Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils.

Rose Essential Oil (Rosa Damascena)

I have to admit I am utterly biased when it comes to Rose Essential Oil as a nourishing skin food.  I think it is fantastic, and if you think that I am biased, Liz wrote a whole book about it!

I honestly feel that Rose Essential Oil is one of the best skin oils, especially for those with dry skin. Making it ideal to use in Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils. When it has been so widely used across the ancient and modern world it is no surprise that more recent research supports its use.

We know from this research, that not only is it great for your skin, when used regularly,  but it can help relieve the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

Not only does it soothe your skin but it also soothes YOU!

My research shows it is the perfect choice for those dealing with the effects of trauma in their lives on a vibrational level, supporting the deepest levels of the psyche.

Rose Essential Oil is the perfect choice for those with sensitive, dry/combination skin types. It is a vibrant powerhouse of antioxidants and vitamins & minerals. Boasting antiseptic properties making it the ideal regenerative tonic for your skin.  The myriad of antioxidants in Rose Essential Oil helps not only to actively heal but also improve the quality of your skin.

You can use its powerful astringent actions to lift and tone the skin. It helps to contract the muscles of the skin which is brilliant for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and smoothing the skin.

The antioxidant and Citricasant (wound healing) actions, potentially, aid in the reduction and formation of scar tissue and help them fade quicker. Perfect for scars and stretch marks.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium Asperum Var Roseum)

The downside of using Rose Essential Oil for Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils is that it is eye-watering and expensive so it always pays to have an alternative on standby and this is mine.

Rose Geranium is a wonderfully hydrating essential and helps to lock moisture into the skin. It brings both cooling and soothing actions, perfect for things like sunburn and sore, irritated skin.

It was, and is, always my first ‘go-to’ Essential Oil when anyone has eczema or dermatitis. Including myself. I used the wrong washing-up liquid again, and I’m paying for it, but Rose Geranium is doing its thing and the dermatitis’s days are numbered.

I think it is the perfect choice for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils for those with dry, sore, or irritated skin….and yes, there ARE times that I choose it over Rose Essential Oil too. It’s no pauper's choice by any means. It has earned its place and plaudits all on its merit.

Liz tells you more about the luscious and gorgeous Rose Geranium Essential Oil in her blog article.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Anthemis Nobilis L.)

Roman Chamomile is the King of soothing oils and the perfect choice for sore and irritated skin as it is full of anti-inflammatory actions. It is an ideal choice for Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils for people with sensitive or issue-prone skin.

It can be used where there are sudden outbreaks of sore, red rashes to pus-filled blisters. If it is sore, red, and itchy, then this is the Essential Oil for you.

It's great too, if you feel the world is getting to you a bit and your last nerve is being frayed. Calm things down and reduce the sense of tension and frustration with the soothing nature of Roman Chamomile.

It is a great choice for those of us who have sensitive skin.

Find out more in Nature’s Most Soothing Gift: Roman Chamomile Essential Oil with Liz.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon Cablin)

Patchouli is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate its heady and earthy fragrance.

If you hate it, can I encourage you to give it one more go using it in your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils and try blending it to mitigate it a little? It is so wonderful in your skincare regime it is worth giving it some grace if you can bear to.

Naturally, I love it and use it with wild abandon in this house.

In the folk and ancient medicines of Asia, Patchouli was mostly used to treat dandruff. Treating the oily scalp and addressing other skin conditions linked with dryness and eczema.

Patchouli is one of those wonderful Essential Oils that we can fully utilize to help us reduce the appearance of scarring. We can use it on blemishes and those deep dark bruises too.

It is the perfect choice for this time of year to moisturize chapped skin.

Like Rose, it has those powerful astringent properties that research suggests may also help lift and tighten sagging skin.

Patchouli has been used for centuries across Asia for purifying the scalp, strengthening hair, and reducing hair loss.

If you want to know What Is Patchouli Oil Good For? Pop on over to Liz’s article.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia Serrata)

When we were kids, we were introduced to Frankincense Essential Oil with a rather strange and morbid introduction. Our mother told us that if it was good enough to preserve Egyptian Mummies for thousands of years, it could surely preserve and look after our skin too.

It is wonderful for your Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils if you have more mature skin especially since it has components promoting cell regeneration. This helps to keep the cells and tissues of your skin healthy and in tip-top condition. It also has beneficial antioxidants that lift and tighten the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, helping the skin to appear firm and plump, and helping it maintain its elasticity.

It’s full of those beneficial actions and properties that combine to protect the skin. Helping the skin to heal from any damage and reducing any associated inflammation. Perfect for addressing cuts, nicks, bites, and burns. Those properties also combine and help in the reduction of skin imperfections and the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

It’s perfect for chapped hands and ragged cuticles, so use its tip to toe for the full and lasting benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil.

Click the link if you want more information on What Is Frankincense Essential Oil Used For.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Honorable Mention:

Violet Leaf Absolute (Viola Ordorata L.)

I would be doing you a disservice if I did not mention Violet Leaf Absolute to those of you who suffer from extremely sensitive skin.

There was a time, when my immune system collapsed for a good few years, that this was about the only Essential Oil that I could use on my skin because it was so ridiculously sensitive.

If you have super sensitive skin and still want to try and make Dry Body Oil with Essential Oils, then invest in this. I say, invest, because it is not cheap. However, the fragrance is incredible, between sweet floral and fresh, vibrant green, you need very little of it to make an impact on your skin or your nose. Even if you bought just a couple of ml, it will last you well.

A deliciously cooling and soothing oil, perfect for when your skin feels hot, itchy, and irritated.

Try it on its own first to see if your skin can tolerate it. Then introduce Roman Chamomile, wait a few weeks to gauge tolerance, and then graduate to adding Rose Essential Oil too if you can. Your skin needs time to get used to the Essential Oils and time to work and assimilate. It took me many months to even tolerate a second Essential Oil.

Safety: Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
