Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth - The Science
Understanding hair growth will help us get the maximum effect from our oils. So, a bit of science to support our essential oil recipe for hair growth.
Hair & Keratin
Hair is made up mostly of a fibrous protein called Keratin. The amount of keratin in our hair varies from person to person but usually comprises between 65% and 95% of our hair. is It also forms body hair, fingernails, and toenails. Our skin also contains keratin.
The way hair grows is fascinating, you're gonna love this bit of science!
- First, stem cells divide to form a type of cell called keratinocytes.
- Keratinocytes then move to various parts of the body. Their shape flattens, and then they die. ( Poor things! )
- These newly formed (recently dead) cells are pushed up through the skin
- As cells are pushed, they detach from all their nourishment sources.
- They die and form keratin, through a process called keratinization.
Keratinized cells for what is essentially a rod of tissue and protein begin to build.
- This is how the shaft of your hair is formed.
Since hair is dead it is no longer supported by any nourishment from our body. Therefore it is important to feed and nourish it. We could use any number of natural ingredients to do this.
Limitations of an Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth
While there is evidence to support using essential oils on your hair. But there are some areas that you could fall down, so let’s look at those.
Essential Oils to Stimulate Hair Growth
Essential oils and carrier oils are great tools to help hair growth, but they will not do the job as effectively as they could on their own.
Massage is a key ingredient in encouraging hair growth.
Hair loss often happens because the circulation is not strong enough and does not provide the hair follicles with enough oxygen and nutrients to sustain the hair.
Any agent that will improve the circulation and encourage the production and absorption of more oxygen in the hair follicles is going to prove useful. This better oxygen absorption and circulation stimulation will both help to strengthen and repair them.
Excellent circulation and blood supply are required to stimulate hair growth. Massage is wonderful for scalp health and stimulates hair follicles. Doing it with carrier oils and essential oils aids keratin formation and nourishes the hair.
If you have thinning hair and are experiencing a lot of hair fall or hair loss, massaging your scalp with our essential oil recipe for hair growth may be helpful.
Make a massaging hair treatment with our essential oil recipe for hair growth part of your weekly regimen for super soft, healthy hair, full of life and vigor.

Therefore, a successful essential oil recipe for hair growth needs to be a base that you can leave on hair your hair longer. This could either be for a short amount of time, in which case you could use a Mask or Hot Hair Oil, or for a longer-lasting product, a Hair Serum or Dry Shampoo.

However, when it comes to our hair when used overly regularly, Lavender essential oil can be quite drying to the hair and scalp. It is something that we should use occasionally in our essential oil recipe for hair growth and more for scalp irritations and skin conditions like dandruff, rather than for the hair itself.
It can be useful in an essential oil blend when tackling hair loss and used in massage oil. However to maintain hydration and to avoid drying out your skin, err on the side of using it less often.

Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Rosemary, as a herb, has been used for millennia in hair care and it is most popular as a hair rinse to encourage thick, shiny hair. This was tested in a 2015 trial of androgenetic alopecia. (hair loss due to hormonal balance)
Rosemary essential oil proved more effective than the standard treatment, Minoxidil 2%, for hair loss and was more successful at stimulating hair growth. The study concluded ‘The findings of the present trial provided evidence concerning the efficacy of rosemary oil in the treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia’. Panahi (2015)
Ezekwe (2020), stated ‘several botanical and natural ingredients do show promise in treating androgenetic alopecia’. These included Rosemary, Thyme, and Tea Tree essential oils.

Tea Tree for Healthy Hair Growth
Bit of a red herring this one, because within the confines of this post, we imagine that people want more hair, but of course that might not always be the case.
Tea Tree and Lavender essential oils were researched by Tirabassi (2013) to reduce idiopathic hirsutism, where women have male hair growth patterns.
Both were found to reduce unwanted excess hair.

Carrier Oils To Use With Essential Oils For Hair Growth
When it comes to our essential oil recipe for hair growth we need to consider that the carrier oils are just as important because they too are packed with active ingredients that can be supremely useful to us. Just as we use essential oils for their properties, we can do the same with carrier oils. Your essential oil recipe for hair growth will be doubly effective if you choose the right carrier oils.
Rosehip Carrier Oil (Rosa Canina)
Research from Truong (2023) concluded, ‘findings suggest that Rosehip seed oil stimulates hair growth and may show promise as a preventive and/or therapeutic agent for hair loss’.
We can use Rosehip to reduce hair fall and hair loss and try to slow down thinning hair.
Rosehip Seed carrier oil has antioxidant properties that will always place it at the top of my list for both skin and haircare.
Coconut MCT Carrier Oil (Cocos nucifera)
Coconut oil comes in a few varieties, Cold Pressed Extra Virgin which can be solid at room temperature. Fractionated Coconut Oil goes through a separation process called ‘fractionation’ which separates the different types of fats to leave an odorless and colorless oil.
Coconut MCT carrier oil has a type of fat called Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) left intact in the carrier oil. The difference lies in how our body metabolizes the different ‘chains’ of fatty acids. MCT is a medium-length fatty acid chain and is metabolized in a different way than a long-chain triglyceride or LCT. Our body finds it easier to metabolize, digest, and absorb MCT and so they are converted or absorbed more quickly into the body.
When it comes to scalp health and your essential oil recipe for hair growth, use a carrier oil like Coconut MCT. The hair's cortex can more quickly absorb all the oils it needs and nothing more. It absorbed quickly into the scalp fostering the perfect environment for hair growth.
If you are going to use Coconut MCT carrier oil in your essential oil recipe for hair growth, make sure you are massaging it into the scalp too for that extra added benefit.
Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)
Try Jojoba oil as it most closely resembles our own sebum and helps to balance sebum production, Perfect if your hair and scalp are too dry or too oily. Jojoba helps you find a more natural balance.
Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis)
Castor oil is really thick and unctuous and wonderful for bringing moisture to dehydrated hair. Especially if you heat it up. Adding heat allows it to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. It has ricinoleic acid in it, which nourishes the hair follicles and increases the blood flow, which in turn boosts cell production and formation. Always get the best from it by using it in a hot oil treatment.
Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdala)
Sweet Almond oil is always very popular for hair that tends to be on the drier side. It has a rich, thick formulation, which seals in hydration and smoothes the hair shaft.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp Seed oil is another beautifully rich carrier oil that will make your hair super shiny and more manageable.

The Perfect Hair Rinse
I was inspired by that glorious recipe above from AAHA and it got me thinking about the perfect hair rinse recipe for strong shiny hair.
Using Rosemary is a no-brainer, but for those of you who might be sensitive to the essential oil, let's stick with the herb itself, it’s no second choice. Thyme herb compliments the Rosemary so beautifully it would be remiss to not include it.
I think you are going to LOVE this one.
Get A Headstart
You can get a lovely head start by infusing 200ml of organic Apple Cider Vinegar with your herbs for 2-4 weeks beforehand. Add half a lemon too for extra zing!
You Will Need:
- Saucepan
- Large measuring jug
- Stainless steel spoon
- Measuring cups
- Fine strainer, cheesecloth, or a clean tea towel.
- Funnel
- 1-liter bottle
Ingredients:
Makes 1 liter
- 400ml Water, preferably Spring or Distilled (Aqua) + a little extra top off to a liter.
- 250ml Orange Flower Water (Citrus aurantium dulcis flower water)
- 200ml Apple Cider Vinegar (Acetum)
- 50ml Honey, preferably raw (Mel)
- 50ml Glycerine (Glycerol)
- ½ cup Fresh Rosemary herb (Rosmarinus officinalis)
- ¼ cup Fresh Thyme herb (Thymus vulgaris)
Optional:
Silica-rich herbs for stronger, healthier hair
- ½ cup Nettles - fresh (Urtica dioica)
- ½ cup Horsetail - fresh or dried is fine (Equisetum arvense)
- 20 drops of your Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth diluted in 2 tbsp of Witch Hazel
Safety:
- Take care not to get it in your eyes, if you do rinse with clean water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice taking the clearly labeled container with you.
- If you use your Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth - the safety advice for that will apply also.
Method:
There are two ways to do this. You can either:
Infuse Your Vinegar
- Infuse all your herbs in Apple Cider Vinegar with half a lemon and leave to steep for between 2-4 weeks. There is no need to heat them, the vinegar captures all the herby goodness.
- Simply add everything else to the infused vinegar and mix well. This makes an amazing vinegar.
- If you use the Nettle and Horsetail, they are full of silicon which provides the building blocks for strong hair, skin, and nails.
Alternatively, Go For A Hot Water Infusion
- Measure the water into a saucepan set over a medium heat and add the herbs
- Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to a very low simmer for about 20 minutes.
- Take off the heat and set aside to cool.
- When it is just still warm add your Honey and Glycerine. If you add it while it is hot it will reduce the quality of the raw honey.
- When it is cold, add the Orange Flower Water and Apple Cider Vinegar.
- Add your Essential Oil Recipe for Hair Growth (diluted in Witch Hazel) now if you are using it.
- Strain using a fine strainer, cheesecloth, or a clean tea towel.
- Use a funnel and decant into a liter bottle. Top up with water if needed.
- Label all ingredients, on an oil and waterproof label, and add instructions for use.
How To Use:
- Always do a 24-48 hour patch first - don’t skip this, please.
- Keep in the refrigerator and use within 4-5 days.
Now I use this in the following way:
- I wash my hair as normal and condition it. Then I simply put anywhere between 250 - 500ml of the rinse into a jug and pour it over my hair, making sure it covers every strand.
- I squeeze it through my hair to distribute it. However, you can gently comb it through if you have very thick or long hair.
- I don’t rinse it off and I wrap my hair in a hot towel for 20 minutes.
- You can then go on and dry and style your hair as normal. When dried, it leaves your hair super shiny, and soft to the touch, and get ready for plenty of compliments because it will be noticed!
- I feel it stimulates hair growth and that I lose less hair and have reduced hair fall when I brush my hair. I tend to notice stronger, new hair growth around my forehead - I suppose it is the most obvious place you would notice it though!

We are going to create a bit of magic here and do a ‘twofer’. Two for one. We can take the same ingredients and use them as either a Hot Hair Oil treatment or use it at room temperature as a super nourishing Hair Serum to prevent split ends and tame flyaways.
