Benefits of Creating Your Own Makeup With Essential Oils
Tailoring To Your Own Needs Saves You Money
I LOVE wearing makeup but my skin is hypersensitive and makeup often irritates it. I recently had to donate an enormous pile of green eyeshadows I just couldn’t wear, and apart from being disappointing, that became really expensive. So, I decided to make my own makeup with essential oils instead!
The price of shop-bought makeup is soaring and unfortunately, any affordable makeup is seldom natural. It was important to me to avoid unnecessary toxic chemicals, so I stopped buying off-the-shelf beauty products and sourced natural ingredients. By making my own makeup with essential oils, I took back control. Today, wherever I can, I buy locally sourced alternatives of ingredients, which are, ideally organic.
Additionally, there has never been a better time to start making your own personal range of makeup with essential oils. There have been huge developments of natural cosmetic ingredients recently and there is now more choice than there has ever been. Natural Mica powders are game changers and they come in a dazzling array of colors. The home creator can now create makeup with essential oils that are exactly suited to their own skin type, shade, and tone. There is a small initial outlay when you begin making your own makeup, but it soon levels out. Making your own is so much more cost-effective than buying commercial cosmetics.
Equipment For Making Makeup With Essential Oils
You do need some more specialist equipment to create makeup with essential oils at home or ones that are solely set aside for making cosmetics.
Grinder/Pestle and Mortar
You will need a grinder or a pestle and mortar to grind down your powders and pigments and to help them combine to become homogeneous. It needs to be solely for cosmetic making and your makeup with essential oils. They are not to be used for food.
I use an old coffee grinder and I found a cheap pestle and mortar in a thrift shop for a few bucks. It is worth sourcing one of these if you don’t have one because it will improve the final quality and appearance of your makeup with essential oils.
Micro Measuring Spoons
These are invaluable and what I have used here in these makeup with essential oils recipes. It is one of the only ways, besides trying to weigh such small amounts, that you can standardize the recipe measurements.
I have also given you a conversion chart to help you work it out if you don’t have these micro-measurement spoons. I got mine on Amazon and I paid $5, they are well worth the investment.
Fragrance Notes |
Original Scent Profile | Ideal Companions |
---|---|---|
Top | Bergamot, Ocean | Sweet Orange, Lime, Lemon, Tangerine, Mandarin, Kaffir Lime, Grapefruit, Ozone, Basil, Rose, Rose Geranium, Peppermint, Spearmint. |
Heart | Geranium, Rosemary, Lavender, Clary Sage | Jasmine, Neroli, Ylang Ylang, Honeysuckle, Gardenia, Palmarosa, Palo Santo |
Base | Patchouli, Olibanum | Amber, Amyris, Cedarwood, Oud, Patchouli, Tobacco, Vanilla. |
Weigh Scales
Weigh scales are invaluable for measuring ingredients for your makeup with essential oils, though often, some will not go low enough for such tiny amounts. Keep your eye out for gold/gemstone digital scales, if you plan to produce your own makeup regularly or commercially.
They will get covered in fine pigments and powders, so you do need ones just for this purpose. Don’t use scales that you use with food.
Microwave Proof Jug
Those of my regular readers will realize I am balking right now at the idea of putting waxes and carrier oils in the microwave. However, I’m not daft. When working with such tiny amounts of makeup with essential oils, it actually makes sense to do this. Just heat them as little as humanly possible please to preserve the qualities and benefits.
Also, it is worth mentioning, that you don’t want to introduce any droplets of water, which you might if you were to use a jar in a bain marie.
You need a small microwavable jug that will pour absolutely precisely! It will serve you well.
Cosmetic Tins & Palettes
The world is catching up. Here in the UK, Tropic Skincare sells empty palettes and allows you to create your own collection. They are wonderful for reducing unnecessary waste and are far more sustainable.
If your budget won’t stretch to one of these yet, get inventive! Clear out old makeup palettes and containers that you will never use again. However, they must be scrupulously clean and ideally, sterilized or sanitized before use if possible. But they are perfect for your makeup with essential oils.
You can buy small tins and pots suitable for lip balms that are just as good for eyeshadows. Larger ones are brilliant for blush tints. Get creative, you don’t need to bust the budget.
Creating Bases for Makeup With Essential Oils
Creating makeup with essential oils requires a whole new set of ingredients. I have tried to collate recipes that use similar ingredients to reduce the initial cost and outlay. Nevertheless, they give you plenty of scope in the types of makeup with essential oils products you can make with them. It is a learning curve, but you are NOT alone. Let’s learn together.
Mineral Base
I recommend you begin with a ready-made DIY Mineral Base. Life will be much easier if you do. These are composed of some combination of naturally derived ingredients including Magnesium Stearate, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, Kaolin Clay, Silica, and Mica. You can use it to make primers, foundations, concealers, blushers, eyeshadows, and lipsticks amongst other things. Since it forms the core of makeup recipes, it is worth buying in larger amounts.
TOP SECRET TIP: It is not impossible to make your own Mineral Base but it does require quite a lot of research to determine the correct proportions of different ingredients. It is a great next step when you have got the hang of using ready-made bases to design and create makeup with essential oils and feel ready to progress a bit further. Commercial producers are required to list ingredients in the order of volume used. This can often give you a very rough idea of how to replicate products.
Wax
Wax is found in store-bought beauty products across the globe and is important to a lot of makeup with essential oils recipes.
Lipsticks often need a little wax to create the right texture. Personally, I prefer Beeswax and Hemp wax for these applications and rarely use anything else, but skin-safe waxes like Soy offer you a viable alternative. But since Soy is often exposed to herbicides and pesticides look for organic versions if avoiding toxins is your objective.
Best Carrier Oils For Makeup With Essential Oils
Carrier oils will be the next set of ingredients you need for your makeup with essential oils. In reality, though, you don’t need a great deal, either in terms of the amount you will use or the selection you need. I would make sure I always had these three to hand:
Sweet Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis)
Sweet Almond oil has a lovely long shelf life and light consistency which makes it perfect for your makeup with essential oils. It acts well on the brush to disperse the makeup across the surface of the skin and is ideal for bringing a powder together to press into a tin.
Note: People who are allergic to nuts should avoid this oil. Others that may not be so obvious to avoid are those with “kernel” in their name. So, peach and apricot kernel oils for example.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Solid State) (Cocos Nucifera )
EV Coconut oil is wonderfully nourishing and full of skin-healthy properties. The fact it is solid at room temperature makes this a boon for makeup with essential oils, like Primers and Lipsticks.
Obviously, this only applies in temperate areas of the world, however. Those with hot climates will never likely experience EV Coconut oil as a solid! If you live somewhere hot, opt for a cosmetic butter instead. Shea Butter and Mango Butter make great choices.
Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)
Jojoba oil is actually a wax that closely resembles our own sebum. This means it makes a suitable choice for most skin types. Choose this if you plan to create makeup and cosmetics for a lot of different people. Additionally, I would always choose this over Sweet Almond when I create a small amount of makeup with essential oils that I plan to use quickly.
Improving Makeup With Essential Oils
I noticed that Avon in the UK has just launched a range of cosmetics with an extra layer of care. Foundation with an added serum to nourish your skin and lipsticks with skincare ingredients. How do I say “Yeah but honey, this ain’t nothing new. I’ve been doing this for years!”.
I have been adding essential oils and carrier oils to my cosmetics and makeup recipes since my teens. (A very long time). Essential oils are dual purpose. They smell great and are bursting with active properties and benefits. Frankly, creating your own makeup with essential oils is a no-brainer.
So, let me share some of what I have learned over those many…. many years.
Create Nourishing Makeup With Essential Oils
When you want essential oils for skin nourishment choose the Queen of Essential Oils herself, Rose. Yes, she’s pricey but she goes a long way and she is an absolute champion of dry skin. Not only that but she is packed to the gunnel with positive actions and benefits. Mood-enhancing antidepressants, pain relieving analgesics, stress and anxiety relieving. Rose really is the Queen of making us look better and feel better, so she always appears in my own personal skincare and makeup with essential oils.

Makeup with Essential Oils for Acne and Skin Prone to Breakouts
I had terrible acne as a kid, yep, had the Oxytetracycline and everything! I remember, keenly, how much those skin care preparations of the time used to sting and smart. It didn’t help that I LOVED wearing makeup and as many of you know, acne + makeup = potential breakouts.
My grandmother gave me a Rose and Cucumber gift set and it was life-changing. I treasured it so much. I still have the tin it came in, 40 years on! This one kind act led me to use Cucumber and opened up the idea of using plant medicine to soothe my skin.
My Mother chased me round the house with a bottle of Lavender, and later, Tea Tree on my festering zits. It was vaguely traumatic but that too, opened my eyes to the power of using essential oils like Tea Tree, Lavender, and Roman Chamomile to soothe my acne. These are all also pretty useful essential oils for oily skin. Soon, the skincare market began to follow suit to include essential oils like Tea Tree.
So, I soon learned that adding a few drops of essential oils in my foundation was seemingly beneficial and I still do to this day in my makeup with essential oils. Acne, thankfully, is a thing of the past for me.
If acne is something that you are interested in, visit my post: Revolutionary Acne Kit: Essential Oils For Clearer Skin! where I cover these essential oils in depth. Use this knowledge to inform what oils you might like to use for your makeup with essential oils.
Take back control, acne is not the boss of you!
Makeup With Essential Oils For Mature Skin
I am at that point in my life where my skin is changing quickly in response to perimenopause. This is the prime time to start introducing Frankincense into my makeup with essential oils.
We were introduced to this essential oil in our early years as the one that ‘preserves Egyptian Mummies’. Frankly, it did a pretty good job! (Realistically, it is probably more to do with the dry and arid Egyptian climate).
I have every confidence in its ability to preserve my maturing skin by refining fine lines and wrinkles and reducing inflammation.
Han (2017), ‘study suggests that FREO possesses promising potential to modulate the biological processes of inflammation and tissue remodeling in human skin’.
Kotb (2023) provides more recent research ‘Our results indicated the potential use of FO-SLNs as a promising topical anti-aging therapy’.
Liz shows you How To Use Frankincense Oil On The Face, but don’t forget that if you are of a certain age, it is fantastic in your makeup with essential oils.
Makeup With Essential Oils For Congested Skin
Skin can become congested for a variety of reasons including illness, poor diet, or environmental factors. Carrot Seed essential oil is a godsend for congested skin. Add it to your skincare regimen and makeup with essential oils to help clarify and refine the appearance of your skin.
This should be a constant companion in your bathroom if you are a smoker.
Find Carrot Seed in Liz’s 10 Best Essential Oils For Face Treatments.
Essential Oils, Makeup, and Pregnancy
All essential oils should be avoided during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy and this includes in your makeup, even with such tiny amounts. You want to do everything you can to protect that precious life growing inside of you.
After that, there are essential oils that you can use, including in your makeup. For more in-depth information on this subject, join Liz for The Most Effective Essential Oils For Pregnancy.
Adding Color to Makeup With Essential Oils
The next requirement for your makeup with essential oils is color, so you are going to need a selection of cosmetic pigments.
Pigments
Below is a list of the five most common. To have ultimate control in terms of color mixing and blending to match skin tones exactly, you should ideally have all five.
Yellow Iron Oxide (CI 77492)
Cools the look of a preparation. If it feels too warm, use this to cool it down.
Red Iron Oxide (CI 77491)
This adds warmth and rich color to preparations that look too cool or flat on the skin.
Black Iron Oxide (CI 77499)
Black darkens the preparation and adds more shade.
Green Chromium Oxide (CI 77289)
If a preparation is too red or pink, green helps to balance it. It also counters redness in skin tone.
Blue Ultramarine (CI 77007)
We’ve all seen skin preparations that are just too orange. Blue Ultramarine is what you need to balance it out beautifully.
Remember, that the white tint of the Mineral Base can be used to lighten a preparation. If it feels too dark, just add a little more.
Mica Powder Pigments (CI 77019)
There is something about Mica Pigments that just makes me happy. I am a color fiend and I love bright vibrant colors. Mica pigments mean I can completely tailor the colors of my makeup with essential oils. I especially love this for my eyeshadows.
Mica is a natural substance and is actually a rock! Though a pretty soft rock at that. Those of you in the craft world may have seen mica sheets for art and craftwork, super fine and delicate sheets of see-through rock.
It is mixed with a variety of pigments, like those above, to create a never-ending rainbow of choice and gives your makeup an attractive pearly and shimmery finish.
These powders are usually very affordable, so you have some leeway to experiment a little in your makeup with essential oils.
Natural Pigments
Additionally, there is a whole range of natural-based pigments to add color to your makeup with essential oils. Really, these are the ultimate goals in your journey towards creating your own makeup with essential oils and organic, natural skincare.
Commercial pigments are fairly standardized, so if you follow the recipes precisely they should always yield the same results. Therefore, Jolene in Alabama should get the same result as Cindy in New York.
Again, it pays to learn color mixing with standardized pigments and then move on to natural pigments because their colors vary. But once you feel confident, move on to natural pigments and have fun experimenting with Cocoa powder, Beetroot powder, Turmeric root, Alkanet root, Acai, Calendula petals, Elderberries, Carrot, Henna, Hibiscus flowers, Indigo, Madder, Paprika and even Pomegranate.
Preservativing Makeup with Essential Oils
I’ll be honest, I don’t use preservatives in my makeup with essential oils. If you are giving them to friends or intend to see them, then preservatives become mandatory. Use them if you want peace of mind and if you want to make products with a long shelf life. I get around the need by making small amounts that I will use quickly and using certain essential oils to help preserve my preparations instead. The choice is yours.
There are a number of commercial choices.
Look for Natural Preservatives like:
- Otiphen
- Liquid Germal Plus
- Germaben II
- Germaben II E
Your application will influence which one you choose as they all have different skills. Pressed powders require different products creams and lotions for example.
Here is some information from The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics about which preservatives to avoid in your makeup with essential oils.
Adding Fragrance Oils To Your Makeup With Essential Oils
There may be a reason you want to add fragrance oils to your makeup with essential oils.
If you do so, clearly you need to be careful not to exceed the correct amount. To be reassured about this, you will need to check the IFRA guidelines. If you want to know How To Find Safety Information On The VINEVIDA Website, pop on over to this.
However, armed with this, it is not always obvious which guideline is appropriate.
Eye Makeup is fairly obvious. It comes under IFRA category 3C - Eye products of all types (eye shadow mascara, eyeliner, eye make-up, etc...)
However, foundation also falls in this category, because you also put foundation on your eyes. I would also recommend that you follow this category for Blush Tint too.
Many fragrance oils have a super low IFRA Maximum Safety Dilution Rate in that category, many are less than 1%. When you are working in such small amounts in the first place that can be hard to achieve. Splitting singular drops is easy, but it is not necessarily obvious how to do this. The best way to do it is to take 9 drops of carrier oil, then add one drop of fragrance oil. Using one drop of the mix to achieve 0.1%
Fragrance Oils with Easy Safety Data
I have trawled through the Vinevida safety data though, and we do stock several fragrance oils with quite high safety dilution rates. If you choose these to use in your makeup with essential
Oil preparations will make your life a little easier.
- NO. 33 - Fresh Cut Roses - 68.71%
- NO. 1102 - Inspired By: Bali Mango By Bath & Body Works - 35.52%
- NO. 1114 - Inspired By: Juicy Georgia Peach By Bath & Body Works - 21.52%
- NO. 43 - Honeysuckle & Jasmine - 36.31%
- NO. 59 - Patchouli Fragrance Oil - 52.50%
You may find it helpful to remember the safety dilution rate is NOT a recipe recommendation. You don't need that much and might be more pleased with the effects of using less.
Recipes For Makeup With Essential Oils
As stated earlier, these makeup with essential oils recipes all use similar ingredients to make the most of your initial outlay. Nevertheless, there is scope to tinker with the recipes to tailor them to your skin tone and skin type and your needs.
Feel free to experiment with other mica or pigment colors, swap out carrier oils that you have at home, and use essential oils that appeal more to you. Don’t forget though, to check IFRA safety guidelines first.
Not sure how? Read - How To Find Safety Information On The VINEVIDA Website.
DIY Recipes For Makeup With Essential Oils

Yes, the ingredients are new, as might be some of the equipment, but dive in and have a go! Build your confidence and skill set and soon you’ll be knocking out a whole range of makeup for yourself. Be prepared for compliments and orders from your family and friends too!
Skin Primer
Skin Primer is a Makeup artist's secret weapon, they are amazing for creating a wonderfully smooth base for your makeup with essential oils and give your Mineral Foundation something to ‘stick’ to. This gives it better staying power and helps it to last throughout the day.
It leaves your skin feeling hydrated and nourished and looking smooth, supple, and less lined. I find it helps to stop the powder from filling your fine lines and creases that can often accentuate them. Use this to mitigate that from happening.
You Will Need:
- Double boiler or microwave-proof jug
- Measuring spoons
- Stainless steel spoon
- 4oz Jar and lid
- Label
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp of Jojoba Carrier Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)
- 2 tbsp of Extra Virgin Coconut Carrier Oil (Solid State) (Cocos Nucifera )
- 2 tbsp of Mango Butter (Mangifera indica) ( or Half Mango, Half Shea Butter)
- 1 tbsp of Beeswax (or Half Beeswax and Half Hemp Wax) (Cera alba)
- 50 drops of Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium Asperum Var Roseum)
- 50 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula Angustifolia)
Optional: Preservative of your choice.
Safety:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
- Do a 24-48 hour patch test.
Method:
- Place your Beeswax and Mango Butter into the double boiler over low heat and allow it to melt gently. Alternatively, heat it on ¼ power in your microwave. Reducing the heat helps stop it from burning and helps to preserve quality.
- Once molten, add the carrier oils and warm through gently.
- Leave to cool for a few minutes add in your essential oils and mix thoroughly.
- Pour into your jar, cover with a clean cloth, and allow to set.
- Once fully cooled and set, add your lid.
- Label clearly, listing all of your ingredients for safety reasons.
How To Use:
- Don’t forget your patch test!
- Apply sparingly over clean, dry skin and work gently into the skin.
- Wait five minutes and check the ‘feel’ of your skin, add a little more if you feel it needs it. Pay particular attention to the area around your eyes and other places where you might have fine lines.
- Apply your makeup as normal.

This is a brilliant entry product into making your own makeup with essential oils and I thoroughly encourage you to give it a go. It’s easy to tinker with and get that perfect shade you have been searching for for so long.
You Will Need:
- Grinder or Pestle and mortar
- Measuring spoons
- Micro Measuring Spoons
- Stainless steel spoon
- Small bowl
- Small piece of aluminum foil
- Foundation makeup brush
- Suitable pot or container
- Label
Ingredients:
Fragrance Notes |
Original Scent Profile | Ideal Companions |
---|---|---|
Top | Bergamot, Ocean | Sweet Orange, Lime, Lemon, Tangerine, Mandarin, Kaffir Lime, Grapefruit, Ozone, Basil, Rose, Rose Geranium, Peppermint, Spearmint. |
Heart | Geranium, Rosemary, Lavender, Clary Sage | Jasmine, Neroli, Ylang Ylang, Honeysuckle, Gardenia, Palmarosa, Palo Santo |
Base | Patchouli, Olibanum | Amber, Amyris, Cedarwood, Oud, Patchouli, Tobacco, Vanilla. |
Optional: Preservative of your choice.
Safety:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy
- Do a 24-48 hour patch test
Method:
- If you have respiratory issues, consider wearing a mask with a fine filter. There is no way around it, the powders are extremely fine and they will be dispersed into the air and environment. Work in a draught-free area and ventilate well.
- Choose the formula of the shade you think will most closely resemble your skin tone.
- Carefully measure out all of the ingredients into either your grinder or your mortar.
- If you are making a loose powder, add your essential oils now. Space them evenly through powders to help attain an even distribution.
- Pulse the grinder gently, or use the pestle to grind and combine your ingredients. Continue to do so until you have an even color and distribution and there are no lumps or drops of oils visible. It is really important to check that you have no coagulated lumps of essential oils at this stage. They must be evenly distributed through the powder for skin safety.
- Take a brush and test it against the skin on your face for your desired color, (not your arm, which will be a different color)! Check it in natural light if possible
- Make any corrections, use the table below to help, mix again and test and continue in this way, until you reach a shade that is the perfect match for your skin tone.
- If you want to keep your powder loose, tip it into an appropriate container.
- Clearly label your makeup with essential oils, listing all of the ingredients used for safety reasons.
Pressed Powder
- To make a pressed powder, follow the above instructions but instead of adding your essential oils at the grinding stage, add them into your carrier oil instead.
- Pour your combined Mineral Foundation into a small bowl and allow it to settle.
- Slowly add in small amounts of your combined oils. Mix until you have something that appears crumbly, think of making pastry or crumble topping. Make sure the clumps are even, but don’t look wet or sloppy. Err on the side of caution. Less is more!
- Once you reach the perfect consistency and texture, carefully spoon the mixture into an appropriate palette or tin.
- Fold a piece of foil, in the rough shape of your vessel and use this to help you press it down into your container evenly and neatly. Use the back of a spoon to help.
- Tidy up the edges to make it look lovely and neat, you can even try embossing a pretty design into it using an oiled rubber stamp.
- Label your makeup with essential oils clearly. For safety reasons, list every ingredient used.

Eyeliner
You have to be a little careful when it comes to what you put near your eyes, but making your own Eyeliner is not that much more of a step from making your own Eyeshadow or even Lipstick. Are you looking for a particular shade of eyeliner that you just cannot find? Make your own!
For an eyeliner that glides onto the skin easily, look at how you could alter the lipstick recipe. You would need the pigments to be more intense so you need a lot more of them. Adding a little more oil helps it to be softer, more wax makes it harder but gives it better staying power. A tinker with the proportions can help you get the perfect consistency and it will withstand being re-melted a couple of times during testing, as long as the heat is low.
Setting Spray
