Our Favourite Essential Oils For Spring Diffuser Blends

Our Favourite Essential Oils For Spring Diffuser Blends

Back last spring, I wrote Early Bloomers: Perfect Diffuser Blends for Spring, in which I talked about moving away from all the spice of winter in your essential oil diffuser recipes into the more ethereal florals of spring.  We looked at the gorgeous but prohibitively expensive spring flower essential oils, absolutes, and oleoresins. The essential oils list looked a lot like this:

    • Hyacinth Absolute Oil (Hyacinthus Orientalis)

    • Jonquil Absolute or French Narcissus (Narcissus Jonquilla)

    • Narcissus Absolute Oil (Narcissus Poeticus L)

    • Saffron Oleoresin (Crocus Sativa)

    • Violet Leaf Absolute (Violet Odorata)

This year, for spring diffuser blends, I’m going to mix things up a bit and look at recreating certain types of aromas that we associate with spring but with more accessible and cost-effective essential oils. Fresh green shoots, unfurling blossoms, soft sunshine, and those refreshing spring rains that turn the landscape into a blanket of Chartreuse green.

These are some of the essential oils that I’m going to use to recreate these aromatic scent scapes for your essential oil spring blends.

Fresh Greens

For your spring essential oil blends, you want those bright, fresh green herbs that almost sparkle with vitality and the surge of new life. Choose essential oils derived from newly sprouted green leaves like:

Top Notes:

Top notes are super fresh and full of vitality, and you need to use them wisely, as they will disperse the fastest as they are the most volatile and ethereal of the scent notes. Always pair them with anchoring base notes for improved longevity in your spring diffuser blends

Heart Notes:

Heart notes have a bit more body to them and last a bit longer, and while these have green tones, they are less fresh than the volatile top notes. They make a great structure to build upon, though.

Base Notes:

These base notes have deeper, almost drier grass and hay-like notes. They last much longer and provide a great anchor in a blend of top and heart notes.

Ozone, Marine & Breath Of Fresh Air Effects

Ozone, Marine and Breath Of Fresh Air Effects

In your spring diffuser blends, airy and marine aromas can be difficult to achieve using just essential oils alone. But it is not impossible! We can create breaths of fresh air with menthol and camphoraceous constituents. We can also include the coniferous tree essential oils to emulate forest freshness in spring diffuser blend recipes as well.

Top Notes:

These top notes are airy and full of volatile oils that evaporate quickly. They offer a lovely blast of freshness that feels cool on your nose, just like a breath of fresh spring air.

Heart Notes:

These oils are more hearty and have more body and substance to them. They still have a quality of emulating a fresh air or marine aroma, just at a deeper level.

Base Notes:

These base notes drop things down a touch and are wonderful anchors to those fresh green aromas that are light and airy. A tiny drop of these adds extra gravitas to your spring diffuser recipes.

Delicate Flowers And Blossoms

Delicate Flowers And Blossoms

Emulating those delicate and ethereal spring flowers in your spring diffuser blends is a challenge because they have such different aromas from later spring and summer flowers. However, essential oils like Rose Geranium make a lovely replacement for aromas like Cherry blossom. Palmarosa is the perfect mix of greenery with a delicate rose-like scent.

Top Notes:

These are lovely and light, and Palmarosa makes a wonderful choice to emulate those delicate blossoms that we see so much through spring.

Heart Notes:

The stalwart of any great perfume is a heartspace filled with luscious floral notes. It’s a good example to follow when creating your own floral essential oil blend recipes.

Base Notes:

I’ve dropped Jasmine and Ylang Ylang down into the base notes, when in truth, they straddle both heart AND base notes. You can use them interchangeably in your springtime essential oil blends. While Vanilla is not a floral, a drop of it does lend itself to anchoring floral notes rather wonderfully.

Bright Colors

Bright Colors

For developing the recipes for spring diffuser blends, I drew upon the experience of teaching holistic wellbeing classes.

Some of my favourite classes were for students to ‘see’ things in new ways. One of the classes was to take bottles of essential oils and fragrance oils and classify them into corresponding colors. While this might sound odd, when it comes to pairing essential oils to help chakras function more effectively, it takes on a whole new meaning for your diffuser blends for spring

Spring is the time of contrasting colours. The colours appear opposite each other on the colour wheel, and through the year, we see it emulated through nature. Red and green are the colours of winter berries nestled among evergreens. Blue and orange emulate the Delphiniums and Tiger Lillies of summer cottage gardens. Yet, purple and yellow belong to the spring, vibrant Purple crocuses burst forth among swathes of sunny yellow Tete-a-Tetes and Daffodils. Just glorious.

Now, the hard bit to get your head around here is what color the essential oil inspires in YOU. There are no hard and fast answers either. Our sense of smell is such a personal thing. Try writing the names of colours on blocks of paper and laying them out on the table in front of you. Pick up a bottle without looking at the label, smell it deeply for a few seconds and see what colours it inspires, and place it on the corresponding paper.

I guarantee you will be surprised at some of the results, and your results may well differ from mine, and that is ok!

Zesty, Clean & Refreshing

Zesty, Clean & Refreshing

Whenever we say zesty, Citrus oils spring to mind, and they are perfect for inspiring that invigorating and refreshing sensation we associate with the coming of spring. They are perfect for creating spring diffuser blends for refreshing and invigorating the home, so they are ideal for kitchen diffuser blends, too.

Don’t forget that we also have those refreshing green herbs and invigorating coniferous essential oils we can call upon for that ‘breath of fresh air’ effect.

Top Notes:

For your spring diffuser blends, you can use a variety of citrus and herbal essential oils to emulate the feelings of fresh greenery and cleanliness. Try the combinations of Lemon Eucalyptus and Lemon Tea Tree for a citrus zing with that medicinal-type aroma. These two oils are full of constituents with antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. So they don’t just smell clean, they will help clean the air too. Ideal for spring essential oil diffuser blends that need to have an extra function in the home, bathroom, or kitchen.

Top Notes:

Heart Notes:

The heart notes are a bit more robust and have more depth to them; they also have stronger aromas for your spring diffuser blends, so blend with a deft hand. I have to confess that I love the smell of disinfectants, so Scots Pine screams clean and fresh, paired with a citrus oil like Grapefruit for that zesty edge. If you are not as hardcore as me, plump for Rosemary and Thyme for something a little gentler.

Base Notes:

I’ve included Cedarwood down here in the base notes; it has this lovely light, woody aroma, but it keeps that refreshing edge that is so common with coniferous trees. It’s wonderful at anchoring and complementing citrus top notes and herbal heart notes, too.

As I said earlier, our sense of smell is extremely personal. What smells clean to me might not resonate with you. If your Mom washed your childhood bed linens in Sandalwood and Jasmine detergent, then you will always associate those scents with clean, fresh linen.

Where you live in the world, of course, has an impact. My spring flowers here in the UK are going to be different from spring flowers in Alaska, California, and South Carolina. Not to mention other parts of the world.

These are your spring diffuser blends, so don’t be afraid to make them your own with the scents that remind you of spring in your part of the world.

Cacophony of Contrasting Color

Cacophony of Contrasting Color

Try these innovative and progressive spring diffuser blend recipes that use essential oils that inspire color within us. I wanted to emulate the stunning scene of vivid purple crocuses blooming between the nodding heads of sunshine yellow Narcissus.

But how do we translate that to color? It’s a novel concept, I know, but let me show you:

    1. For vibrant purple, mix Lavender with a few drops of Patchouli

    2. For sunshine yellow, mix Lemon with equal parts of Tangerine.

You can use these principles to match essential oils to your chakra points and use their esoteric qualities to balance your chakras and your aura.  Not sure what Chakras are? let Liz explain.

How To Use Spring Diffuser Blends

Check Your Instructions

The first thing you need to do is check your manufacturer's instructions for using essential oils in your diffuser. You all have different machines, so I can't give blanket advice for using your spring diffuser blends that will suit you all.

If you have an electric diffuser, you may need to double-check if you need to dilute your diffuser oil blend or not.

In candle burner diffusers, always dilute your spring diffuser blends with plenty of water. You will only need a few drops to fill your space with glorious spring-inspired aromas.

Take Regular Breaks

Don’t forget, after a while, you go nose blind. This is where your brain stops processing the scent. It’s still fragrant; your brain just stopped telling you it is. So after about an hour, take a little break for 20 minutes or so and turn it back on and voila…. Lovely spring scents once more!

Safety Is Paramount

If you have small children or pets in the house, make sure your diffusers are well out of their reach. Often, if you are using a few drops in water, if this gets spilt upon the skin or your pet's fur, it is effectively still undiluted! Acquaint yourself with the pointers in Safely Removing Essential Oils from Skin so you instantly know what to do in this eventuality.

If you want to introduce fragrance oils, by all means, have at it.
