Introducing Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

There are so many incredible ways to use Ylang-Ylang essential oil, that we just get so excited about it. If you have never had the pleasure of being introduced to Ylang Ylang essential oil, pop on over and read Liz’s article So Many Reasons To Love Ylang Ylang and get the lowdown.

It is no secret that Ylang Ylang essential oil is also one of my great loves. She is one of the essential oils that I use most. Let’s just have a quick look at what makes her so special.

Ylang Ylang is like balance in a bottle.

An essential oil that restores equilibrium to wayward hormones. It balances combinations in the skin, as well as settling disturbed sleep and agitated moods. The constituents in ylang-ylang essential oil are proven to lower blood pressure and emotionally it draws you back to the center and equilibrium.

I want to focus on a variety of ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil at home, and you guessed it, they will all be centered around that elusive sense of harmony and balance in our lives.

Using Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Safely

Four areas to think about.

    1. As stated, it has a profound effect on blood pressure. The science shows how it will bring high blood pressure down fast. Therefore, this is not a recommended oil if you already have low blood pressure.
    2. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil normalizes hormonal balance. In pregnancy we do not want normal hormonal balance…we want a lovely gush of pregnancy hormones. Therefore we do not advise the use of Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil until at least the 37th week of pregnancy.
    3. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil can be nauseating, so only use it for an hour at a time.
    4. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil has a very low maximum dilution rate since Srivastava (2014) found it to be a known skin sensitizer.  Maximum dilution for Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil - according to Essential Oil for Safety Professionals, (Tisserand and Young, 2013) is 0.8%

If you have not used it on your skin before, please Do NOT skip the recommended patch tests.

Ways To Use Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Combination Skin

Balancing Toner

Clean Bottle Micellar Water

Skincare is one of the best ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil. It normalizes sebum secretion re-balancing dry and oily skins alike. Pair it with Rose Absolute if you have dry skin or Grapefruit if your skin is oily..……………

Those with hyperpigmentation may be interested to read the research of Loh Teng Hern Tan (2015) who found, “The methanolic extract of the flower buds of C. Odorata was found to exhibit inhibitory effects against melanogenesis (hyperpigmentation of the skin)”.

Toners are quick and easy to make, and very effective. It’s the perfect entry-level project for the complete beginner into ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil.

IFRA Safety

The International Fragrance Regulation Authority suggests you use even less than the 0.7% dilution to make facial toners. Toners fall into IFRA category 5B where they recommend keeping the amount of ylang ylang you use in the blend below 0.18%. In layman's terms, this means you must not use more than 0.18 ml of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil in 100 ml or toner.

That equates to about 3 drops.

You Will Need:
    1. A measuring jug
    2. Stainless steel spoon
    3. Funnel
    4. 100 ml Bottle - preferably dark amber glass.
    5. Waterproof and oil-proof label.
Ingredients:
    • 50 ml Rosewater (Rosa Damascena)
    • 30 ml Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana)
    • 10 ml Distilled Water (Aqua)
    • 10ml Glycerine (Glycerol)
    • 3 drops of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (Cananga Odorata)
    • 12 drops of Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Anthemis Nobilis L.)
    • 5 drops of Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon Cablin)
    • Preservative of your choice - follow your manufacturer's guidelines for use. But use at least 0.5%.

Optional: Castile Soap or Polysorbate 20 or 80 as a surfactant to dissolve any floating essential oils. Add 1ml of Polysorbate 20 or 80 or a couple of drops of Castile Soap and shake well to combine.

Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
Method:
    1. Measure out your Witch Hazel and add your essential oils, stir to combine. The essential oils should dissolve into the Witch Hazel. If they don’t, add a surfactant like Castile Soap or Polysorbate.
    2. Add the remaining ingredients, Glycerin, Rosewater, and Distilled Water, and combine thoroughly.
    3. Use a funnel and decant into a suitable bottle. Lid tightly.
    4. Label listing all ingredients for safety on a waterproof and oil-proof label.
How To Use:
    1. Carry out a 24-48 hour patch test before the first use, please.
    2. Use after cleansing, but before moisturizing.
    3. Take a cotton wad or a soft cotton/bamboo cloth and dab a small amount onto the cotton. Gently move in upward motions over the surface of your skin.
    4. Include your neck and décolletage in the process.
    5. Replenish the cotton wad as needed with Toner. If you see a lot of ‘dirt’ coming off, swap to a new wad or use a different part of your cleansing cloth.
    6. Moisturize as normal.

Balance Hormones

Hormonal imbalance

Of the ways to use Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil is for hormonal imbalances. This is one I tend to use because I find it extremely effective in controlling my symptoms of endometriosis, alongside Vetiver to reduce cramping.

I’m not the only one either, it is a very common way to use this essential oil. However, research into this area is sadly quite lacking.

Shinohara (2017) in her study Effects of essential oil exposure on salivary estrogen concentration in perimenopausal women - concluded that “Together with the previous studies, the present study may give support to the notion that olfactory exposure to some essential oils can influence the salivary concentration of estrogen”. However, it seemed Rose Otto and Geranium had more successful outcomes compared to Ylang Ylang.

In the study Evaluation of Placental Toxicity of Five Essential Oils and Their Potential Endocrine-Disrupting Effects, Fouyet (2022) concluded that “The tested EOs (including Ylang Ylang) appear then to be more hormonal modulators rather than Endocrine Disruptors…[...]” Modulating hormones could be one of the key future research ways to use Ylang Ylang Essential Oil.

Perimenopause Balance Inhaler

When considering ways to use Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil, sometimes its very low safety dilution rate for topical application can be problematic. So, although this blend is diluted into a carrier oil and placed into a rollerball bottle for ease of carrying in your handbag etc, it is designed to be inhaled rather than being applied to the skin.

You Will Need:
    1. A small measuring jug
    2. Stainless steel spoon
    3. Funnel
    4. 20 ml roller ball bottle and cap.
    5. Oil-proof label.
Ingredients:
Method of Preparation:
    1. In a small measuring jug combine all of the ingredients.
    2. Using a funnel, decant into your rollerball and place the roller and cap immediately.
    3. Use an oil-proof label listing all ingredients for safety and annotate as NOT FOR TOPICAL USE.
How To Use:
    1. Remove the cap and inhale.
    2. Breathe deeply and for as long as you can to allow the oils to take effect.
    3. 5-10 deep breaths should be more than enough. By all means, reduce that if you find it too heady. Find your own perfect balance with it.
    4. Take extra care not to get it on the skin or the mucous membranes of your nose. Should any get onto your skin, rinse immediately with warm, soapy water.
    5. Replenish the oil every 3-6 months.
Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
    • Do not use it for more than an hour at a time because it can get heady and give you a headache.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure woman health

There is a lot of research supporting the use of Ylang-ylang essential oil to balance blood pressure. In 2006 a trial showed that  “The ylang oil caused a significant decrease in blood pressure”. Hongratanaworakit (2006)

Inhaling Ylang Ylang essential oil is a great way to introduce it into your regime, I like to use it alongside something that is going to make me stop, relax, and unwind... a bath! These multi-pronged ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oils also help you sleep like a baby! A win-win in my book!

IFRA Safety

In IFRA category 9 for Bath Oil the maximum safety dilution rate is 0.07%. This means in 250ml of Bath Oil, you must not use more than 0.19 ml of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil. That equates to about 3 drops.

Sleep

Senior man sleeping

Again, of the ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil, this is my triple whammy! When I put Ylang Ylang in my bath at night, I’m doing it for multiple reasons and to address a variety of ‘issues’. Hormonal balancing, blood pressure equilibrium, and helping me destress at the end of a long day and to sleep.

It is widely used by aromatherapists to reduce anxiety and facilitate sleep. In her study, McDonell (2019) concluded that “Low-cost, non-traditional aromatherapy treatment (including Ylang Ylang) is potentially effective for improving sleep quality among cardiac rehabilitation patients”.

Surely if it can help cardiac patients, it can help us too right?

There is something uber relaxing about rubbing this on your feet after a long day and allowing it to get to work while you put your feet up for 20 minutes, kick back, and unwind. If you can’t bear to touch your feet, try it on your calves instead or even your arms. Find those alternative ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil that suit you best.

Balancing Balm For Sleep

One of the best relaxing ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil is by creating a Sleep Balm. This is perfect for regulating and balancing your sleep patterns. It can also help improve your sleep over time with those wonderful cumulative effects.

You Will Need:
    1. Double boiler (You can use a heat-proof mason jar or a clean tin can in a saucepan of water)
    2. Measuring cups and spoons
    3. Silicone spatula
    4. Stainless steel spoon
    5. Weigh Scales
    6. Jar Funnel
    7. 100 ml or 4 oz container
    8. Water and oil-proof label
Ingredients:

Optional: A preservative of your choice.

Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
    • Not suitable for children under 6 years.
Method:
Heating Waxes and Butters
    1. You want to conserve the quality of your base ingredients, so heat them at a very low temperature. You also want to heat them for as short a time as possible, therefore as soon as something is molten, take it off the heat.
    2. Warm your double boiler through a little on low to medium heat to aid the process and reduce heating time. Also, set your jar to warm through too, don’t add the hot mix to the cold jar or you risk the glass cracking or shattering. You can warm it in the microwave or oven. Don’t use warm water, as any water residue can encourage the formation of mold.
    3. It is worth measuring out all of your ingredients at this point. That way, you can be ready to go and move quickly.
    4. First, put your waxes into the double boiler, and stir a little to help it melt a bit quicker.
    5. Add your Mango Butter once the wax has half melted.
    6. The moment the waxes and Mango Butter are molten, remove the double boiler from the heat immediately, separate it from the hot water, and then set aside for a moment or two to cool a little.
Adding Carrier and Essential Oils
    1. After a couple of minutes have passed you can add your carrier oil.
    2. Stir to combine and again let it cool a little, but not start to set.
    3. Add your essential oils and stir. If you have an infrared thermometer to hand the best time to add the essential oils is when the mix reaches 125 F/ 51℃ or below. This helps to keep the essential oils at their optimal quality.
    4. Mix thoroughly to combine for at least a minute.
Decanting Into a Jar
    1. On a heatproof tray, set your warm jar and pour the hot mix into the jar with care. A jar funnel can help here.
    2. Cover the jar with a clean cotton cloth and allow it to cool and fully set before you add a lid. Waxes can be notorious for growing mold if they are lidded when still warm and moist. Avoid this by allowing it to fully cool and set before sealing it in any way. A commercial preservative can help avoid this, but you still need to let it cool and fully set. So it does not save you any time.
    3. Once it is fully set and totally cool, lid it tightly and label it, clearly listing all of the ingredients for safety reasons.
How To Use:
    1. Do a 24-48 hour patch test, please.
    2. Take a liberal amount and work into your feet, between your toes, and pay attention to your heels, arches, and balls of the feet. The massage is equally important. You can use a reflexology chart to really up the ante too!
    3. If you cannot bear to touch your feet, try rubbing it into your calves, arms, or hands instead
    4. Wear socks after application if you intend to walk on potentially slippery floors, don’t go barefoot.

Anxiety

This is one of the easiest ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil and introduce it into your daily routine. It can be useful when you are out and about and need on-the-spot support.

There is plenty of research to support Ylang Ylang’s use to relieve anxiety, stress, and depression. Hongratanaworakit (2006) supports this by citing “These findings are likely to represent a relaxing effect of the ylang ylang oil and provide some evidence for the usage of the ylang ylang oil in aromatherapy such as causing a relief of depression and stress in humans”.

A Couple Of Choices

There are a variety of ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil to address stress, anxiety, and depression. However, anxiety is not always simple. Sometimes, we need to be uplifted and at others, we need to be relaxed, so I’m giving you two great options here.

I love citrus essential oils like Bergamot, Sweet Orange, and Mandarin for uplifting and energizing you, but if you want something more relaxing, plump for the more sedative effects of Cedarwood and Lavender instead.

Find your own ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil to manage your anxiety and stress. We all have different needs, so don’t be afraid to tinker and try out a range of other essential oils to work in conjunction with the Ylang-Ylang.

You Will Need:
    1. A small measuring jug
    2. Funnel
    3. Stainless steel spoon
    4. 20 ml roller ball bottle and cap.
    5. Oil-proof label.
Ingredients:
Uplifting Balancing Rollerball

Safety For The Uplifting Blend:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
    • Sweet Orange, like most cold-pressed citrus oils, is phototoxic, so do not expose the skin to direct sunlight (or sunbeds) for 12 hours after use.
Relaxing Balancing Rollerball

Safety For The Relaxing Blend:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
Method:
    1. Combine all of the ingredients in a small measuring jug.
    2. Decant into your roller ball using a funnel for ease and place the roller ball then cap it right away.
    3. Use an oil-proof label listing all ingredients for safety.
    4. If you make the uplifting blend, add a note on the label to remind you not to expose your skin to sunlight for at least 12 hours after application.

Hair

This is one of the most sublime ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil. A super luscious Hot Hair Oil. It is a deeply exotic, decadent, and utterly glorious way to give your hair a treat.  Once you have tried this, you won’t want to use anything else.

Ylang-Ylang is widely used in hair care products. Jake Myara Co-founder of VineVida did a blog article Ylang Ylang Essential Oil For Hair: Nature’s Conditioner that you can check out too.

Ylang Ylang is an effective essential oil for your hair, backed by science and it appears in many hair care products as mentioned in the study by Loh Teng Hern Tan (2015) where he found it appeared in hair protecting products and hair growth promoters.

If you cannot get the utterly glorious Monoi De Tahiti, Extra Virgin Coconut oil carrier oil (Cocos Nucifera) instead.

Balancing Hot Hair Oil

Young woman at spa in a bathrobe

This is one of the most luscious ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil, leaving you with lustrous locks and super soft, shiny hair.

You Will Need:
    1. Double boiler
    2. A measuring jug
    3. Stainless steel spoon
    4. Funnel
    5. ½ pint wide-mouth mason jar
    6. Oil and waterproof label
    7. Hot Towel
Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative of your choice.

Method:
    1. Since you are using a glass jar, set it to warm through in the oven or a microwave, don’t add hot oil to a cold jar!
    2. If your Monoi De Tahiti is in a solid state at room temperature, warm it very, very gently in a double boiler. You want to heat it as little as humanly possible.
    3. While you do this, mix your essential oils with the Rosehip and Argan carrier oils.
    4. As soon as the Monoi is molten, remove it from the heat and separate it from the hot water.
    5. Leave it to cool for a few moments and then add your carrier and essential oil mix and stir thoroughly to combine.
    6. Set your warmed jar on a heat-proof tray and pour the mix into the jar carefully.
    7. Cover with a clean cotton cloth and allow to set and fully cool before adding the lid.
    8. If you add the lid while it is hot and moist it can encourage mold growth. A preservative can help mitigate this but you still need to let it cool under a cotton cloth.
    9. Label and list clearly all ingredients for safety.
How To Use:
    1. Carry out a 24-48 hour patch test, please.
    2. Scoop a liberal amount into a small bowl.
    3. Set this bowl over another larger bowl of warm water and allow it to heat the oil through for several minutes.
    4. Taking small sections of your hair, apply the oil from root to tip, using more at the tip and less at the root. This is especially important if you tend to get greasy roots.
    5. Continue in this way until you have covered all your hair in the hot oil.
    6. Then wrap it into a large hot towel, letting it sink in for at least 20 minutes but ideally an hour. (I have done mine overnight too, don’t forget to protect your pillowslip).
    7. To remove the oil, simply shampoo in the normal way, repeat if necessary, and condition in the normal way, but you will need a lot less conditioner than usual. Rinse well.
    8. Dry and style in the normal way.
Safety:
    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.
    • If you are doing this while you are in the bath, use a non-slip mat and take extra caution getting out of the bath!

Libido

This is more popular in the ways to use Ylang Ylang essential oil as the research starts to support its use. Ylang Ylang is very rich in β-caryophyllene which has long been associated with increasing libido. Tarumi (2020) concluded, “We believe that β-caryophyllene may be a remedy for women with decreased libido”.

A Massage Oil is the perfect tool to help increase your libido, whether you use it alone as body oil after a shower, or with a partner. Get in the mood with this aphrodisiac-laden Massage Oil.

Balancing Libido Massage Oil

One of the more spicy ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil. This is beautifully nourishing for your skin and laden with aphrodisiacs, it should liven things up a bit. Or at the very least start to coax your libido out of its hiding place.

Remember, that essential oils can have cumulative effects, so the more you use them, the more they get to work. Give this some time to work and keep using it for a while to get the best results. There is good science to suggest the more you use it, the quicker it can work too, which is just what you want in this situation. Settle in for the long haul with this one, it’s certainly no hardship because it is simply divine!

    • Use with caution if you suffer from hypotension - low blood pressure.

Harmony

This is one of the easiest ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil in the home. Simply pop this blend in your diffuser.

I found this very interesting excerpt from some research done by Hongratanaworakit (2004) she noted that “The present investigation showed that ylang-ylang oil may be characterized by the concept of "harmonization" rather than relaxation/sedation. Compared to an odorless placebo, ylang-ylang oil caused significant decreases in blood pressure and pulse rate as well as significant increases of subjective attentiveness and alertness”.

From this research, we can deduce that Ylang-Ylang essential oil is ideal when we need to relax but also be alert and attentive. It could make a welcome study companion or keep you focused at work.

I have chosen essential oils for the balance they bring to this harmonizing blend. Don’t be afraid to try your own ways to use Ylang-ylang essential oil to bring harmony to your home. We are all different and our homes are as individual as we are.
