Coconut oil is a natural alternative for soothing sore, dry, and irritated skin. It promotes healthy skin healing and nourishes cracked and chapped lips. Coconut restores healthy-looking skin and gives your lips a smoother appearance.

Cold pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil ( solid at room temperature) is great for making lip balms. It adds firmness and structure.

Any Downsides?
CocoNUT is a nut oil, if you are allergic or sensitive to nuts, you need to avoid using this oil. In some cases, people can find they are sensitive to coconut oil so always do a patch test before making your lip gloss to make sure this does not apply to you.
Coconut oil can block your pores. It scores ⅘ on the comedogenic scale which is pretty high. So be cautious of using too much coconut oil on your face If you are prone to clogged pores, or breakouts.

It will be on hand when you need it most. If it goes solid, it’s just cold, so pop it in your pocket and warm it through first.
Now, I have formulated the recipe to make a handful of roll-ons, because if you are anything like me you will want one in your pocket, one in your purse, one in the car, one in the bathroom, and so on! So this will make approximately five 10 ml roll-ons, you can always share them with your family and friends.
Get organic ingredients where possible and always buy the best quality that your budget allows for your lip care products.
You Will Need:
-
- Double boiler or a clean tin can in a saucepan of water
- Stainless steel spoon
- Tiny bottle funnel
- Paper towels
- Sterilized pin
- 5x 10 ml rollerballs with caps and lids
- Oil and waterproof labels
Ingredients:
-
- 3 tbsp of Coconut MCT carrier oil or Fractionated Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera)
- 1 tbsp of Castor carrier oil (Ricinus communis)
- 1 tbsp of Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) - refined Shea butter has less of an odor.
- 1 Vitamin E Capsule or 2 drops of Vitamin E oil (Tocopherol)
- 20 drops Rose Geranium essential oil (Pelargonium Roseum X Asperum)
Optional - A preservative of your choice, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Although Vitamin E does have some preserving qualities, just not as much as a proprietary preservative.
Safety:
-
- Essential oil specific - do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. If you are in the first stages of pregnancy, simply omit the essential oil to use this recipe safely..
Method:
Using The Double Boiler
-
- Set your double boiler to pre-warm on low to medium heat. If you are using a tin in a saucepan of water, make sure it is scrupulously clean and that your water is not too hot, as it could scorch your oils and butter.
- While you are waiting, gather your equipment and ingredients together.
- We want to mix the oil and butter together, to do this we need to heat them, as the butter will become liquid when it is hot enough melt into the oil, and suspend itself.
- Ideally, you want to heat any of your ingredients as little as possible, and for the shortest time that you reasonably can,
- Start with your Shea Butter because this will take the longest time to heat and melt. Always start with the ingredient that will take the longest to melt. For instance, if we were making lip balm, I would start with the wax first instead.
- As soon as your Shea Butter is half molten, add your Castor and Coconut MCT carrier oil and warm through gently.
Cooling Things Down
-
- Then remove from heat, separate your double boiler from the water, and set on a heat-proof surface to cool for about 10 minutes.
- If you have a Vitamin E Capsule that needs piercing, put just the water back on the heat drop the pin in the boiling water and boil for 10 minutes. Leave in the hot water and remove with a pair of tweezers when needed.
- We allow it to cool down so that the heat of the oil and butter does not degrade the quality of your essential oil and Vitamin E. We always want to add these to fluids that have cooled as much as possible without setting or solidifying.
- After it has cooled somewhat, add your Vitamin E. If you have oil, simply add two drops, if you are using a capsule, pierce with your clean and sterilized pin and squirt the contents into the mix.
- Add the Rose Geranium essential oil and stir everything thoroughly to combine.
Good Practice Bottling
-
- Grab your rollerballs and set them on a paper towel to protect your surfaces and have an extra paper towel and a clean soft cloth at the ready.
- Pop your tiny funnel into the rollerball and slowly fill it up. Carefully remove the funnel and place it into the next and so on until all rollerballs are full of lip gloss with coconut oil. Try not to drip the mix onto the roller balls if you can. If you have, use the extra paper towel dipped in some white vinegar to clean them up. Clean them meticulously, as you don’t want any bits leftover to encourage the formation of mold or bacteria
- Cover with a soft, clean cloth until the mix is fully cooled. If we add caps and lids while it is still hot, it can form moisture and this moisture can encourage mold and bacterial growth too. So let it cool fully before adding them.
Safety Labelling
-
- Label, listing all ingredients clearly, and add an expiry date of 3 months, longer if you used an extra preservative.
- Add the additional safety information to ‘not to be used in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy’ if you intend to share them with family and friends.
How To Use:
-
- Make sure you do a 24-48 patch test before using it for the first time. Allergic reactions could give you a bit of a trout pout!
- Shake the lip gloss well before use to make sure all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Simply apply across the lips with the rollerball. Smoosh your lips together to distribute evenly across the lips for gorgeously glossy and kissable lips.
- Has it set solid? No worries at all, it is just cold, a bit like me right now in this neverending English winter. Simply warm it up in your pocket or place the rollerball in some warm (not hot) water until fluid again, it won't take a minute. Hot water could cause your rollerball glass to shatter so don’t do that, please.
Lip Gloss With Coconut Oil Tailored To My Needs

Everyone likes their lip gloss just so, and you know what you like! It can be hard, when you first set out to learn how to make lip gloss with coconut oil, to determine how to adapt recipes to get the lipgloss just how you want it.
Let me guide you in the right direction.
Can I Add Colorant And Flavourings To This Recipe?
Yes, of course, you can! And you could add in some sparkle and shimmer if you want to.
Look for LIP SAFE colorants, not all skin-safe colorants can be used on lips, so look specifically for colorants that are safe to be used on the lips.
Mica powders are ideal for adding both color and shimmer. They come in hundreds, if not thousands of different colorways and they mix well together, so you can create your perfect shade in any color you fancy. Again, make sure the mica you are buying is lip-safe.
I Want A Thicker Consistency
For extra thickness, add more cosmetic butter, and even beeswax or candelilla wax to add more viscosity to your lip gloss with the coconut oil recipe.
Bear in mind though, that the more viscous your lip gloss is, the less suitable it will be to dispense from a rollerball container. It may be that you may need to swap to a lip balm tin or a lip gloss tube with an application wand.
Can I Have A Thinner Consistency
For a thinner consistency simply reduce the amount of Shea Butter you use. Begin by adding 50% of the recommended amount. Try it for consistency and you can always add more in if you want to.
Give Me More Gloss
Whenever you want more gloss, turn to the lovely thick and unctuous qualities of Castor oil.
Add more Castor oil to your recipe for lip gloss with Coconut Oil and add equal amounts of each carrier oil instead.

Can I Make Something Natural, But More Like Commercial Cosmetic Lip Glosses?
Yes, you can, and here comes the but…. But you may have to start using ingredients that you have never even heard of to get the right kind of consistency, lip feel, color, and finish.
Commercial Cosmetic lip glosses are full of ingredients that you can hardly pronounce, let me just pick one at random for us to have a look at… Oh my!
Polybutene | C10-30 Cholesterol/Lanosterol Esters | Dipentaerythrityl Tetrahydroxystearate/Tetraisostearate | Diisostearyl Malate |

Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 | Octyldodecanol | Silica Dimethyl Silylate | Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate |

We can see there are plenty of natural ingredients in there, like Coconut and Jojoba oil but there are plenty of things that even I have no idea what they are. The inclusion of ‘glass beads’ however concerns me more than a little!
Use A Natural Pre-Made Lip Gloss Bases
There are better, more natural, alternatives. I found a pre-made organic lip gloss base, that you can add coconut oil, colors, flavors, and even essential oils to create your very own, more commercial, lip gloss with coconut oil.
Its ingredients were far less horrifying and it was composed of just organic Castor Bean Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Berry Wax, Organic Jojoba Oil, Glycerin (Coconut), and Vitamin E. I like the sound of that much better. It seems to have a nice jelly and gloopy consistency. However it is not clear, it will be slightly yellow colored from the oils and ingredients, but it is still a great natural alternative for you.
The Final Word

Get in the groove with it and you will soon be wearing the products of your industriousness.
It is so easy to build on your skills and try using colorants, flavors, and even essential oils. Why not try adding some lip-safe mica for a flash of color and a fancy shimmer and sparkle?
Remember, that Castor oil is your glossy secret…sssh, don’t tell everyone. Besides, if it can do that for your lips, think what it can do for your hair!
Get stuck in and have a go at how to make lip gloss with coconut oil, you will have a ball with it…. Mainly a roller ball, but it’s a start!
