Buy The Right Variation Of Fragrance Oils For Spring Cleaning
Let’s begin by making sure you have the right type of oils.
Always use VINEVIDA Soaps & Candles fragrance oils for spring cleaning. This range is specifically designed to be able to be adapted to a large variety of projects, from topical products like body butters and moisturizers to room sprays and surface cleansers.
We also stock a second type of fragrance oils, called “ Diffuser fragrance oils”. These are designed to be used solely for nebulizing or Cold Air Diffusers (CAD). Those are not suitable for the same kind of adaptions.
A Quick Note about Safety
The International Fragrance Authority issues safety for anything that might come into contact with your skin or with surfaces where food might be prepared.
You will want to consider this as you make your products, and every fragrance oil has its own safety data. It looks a helluva a lot more complicated than it is. If you do need further clarification, head on over to our article How To Find Safety Information to walk you through it.
Caution: Fragrance oils may stain furniture and linens. Always do a patch test in a discrete place before covering the whole item.

Multi-Purpose Cleanser
Have a go at making this super fragrant Multi-Purpose Cleanser with NO. 1007. It has delicious notes of White Tea, Aloe, Lily, Cedarwood, and Vanilla. It’s made from natural ingredients and is safe for your home and the environment.
To give it extra oomph at killing germs, I’ve added in some essential oils, too, for their antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral actions. They also bring an invigorating freshness with their green herbal aromas.
IFRA Safety:
Multi-Purpose Cleanser falls under IFRA Category 10A, and it has a maximum dilution rate of 8.6% in this category. This means you can only use up to 8.6ml of NO. 1007 per 100ml of Multi-Purpose Cleanser.
You Will Need:
-
- Measuring jug
- Measuring cups
- Stainless steel spoon
- Bottle funnel
- 1 litre spray bottle
- Oil and waterproof label
Ingredients:
-
- 1 ½ cups of Distilled Water (Aqua)
- 1 ½ cups of White Distilled Vinegar (Acetum)
- 1 cup Castile Soap (Potassium cocoate, jojobate and olivate)
Optional for tougher cleaning: ¼ cup of Rubbing Alcohol (It must be 70%+ proof)
-
- 10 ml of NO. 1007 - Inspired by: Dream On & Westin Hotels Soaps & Candles fragrance oil
- 100 drops of Oregano Essential Oil (Origanum compactum Benth)
- 100 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus limon L (Burm.) F. )
Safety:
-
- Not for topical use.
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
Method:
-
- Into a large measuring jug, carefully measure out all of your ingredients and mix them well.
- Add the fragrance oil and essential oil blend and combine them thoroughly.
- Use your bottle funnel and decant it into an appropriate spray bottle.
- Use an oil and waterproof label and list all of the ingredients for safety reasons. Though I will often write the recipe directly on the bottle in permanent marker, as labels tend to get wet and fall off! It reminds me how to make a refill, too! Super useful.
- Also, add an instruction to ‘Shake Well Before Use.’
How To Use:
-
- Have you done an inconspicuous patch test yet? Please do!
- Shake the bottle well and prime your pump.
- Spray on to the surface and wipe as necessary until it is clean.
- You can rinse the surface if you wish, but it is not necessary. It works better if you don’t. It gives the essential oils time to get to work.
- Always store this bottle safely, as you would any other cleaning product.
- Keep the bottle out of the reach of children and curious pets.
Tumble Drying Sheets
This is super simple, and I wanted to give you something a little less pedestrian and add a dose of sheer indulgence and luxury to your tumble-dried clothes.
This is a really easy way to support your favourite perfume or aftershave and use a dupe to scent your clothes too! Genius right?
NO. 3109 - Inspired by: Fleur de Portofino by Tom Ford has bright and uplifting scent notes with Citrus, Osmanthus, Neroli, Honey & Vanilla. It's simply gorgeous with its soft citrus burst of energy.
(If you want the more pedestrian clean washing aromas, stick to NO. 25 - Clean Cotton, NO. 34 - Fresh Linen and NO. 1110 - Inspired by: April Fresh by Downy)
IFRA Safety:
Tumble Drying Sheets fall under IFRA Category 10A, and it has a maximum dilution rate of 10.53% in this category. This means you can only use up to 10.53 ml of NO. 3109 per 100ml of your tumble drying liquid solution.
You Will Need:
-
- A large glass jar
- A selection of lightweight-edged cotton cloths or J-cloths
- Stainless steel spoon
- Oil and waterproof label
Ingredients:
-
- 200 ml of White Vinegar (Acetum)
- 20 ml of NO. 3109 - Inspired by: Fleur de Portofino by Tom Ford Soaps & Candles fragrance oil
Optional: Castile Soap (Potassium cocoate, jojobate, and olivate) - if your fragrance oil simply floats to the top of the vinegar (because the vinegar is not of a high enough acidity), add some Castile soap to disperse it. You can also use a commercial dispersant like Polysorbate 20 (Sorbitan monolaurate).
Safety:
-
- Keep away from children.
Method:
-
- Simply mix the white vinegar and the fragrance oil for spring cleaning and stir well to combine. You can always add the lid to the jar and shake it instead.
- Add your cotton cloths so they soak up all of the solution.
- Put a label clearly on an oil and waterproof label.
How To Use:
-
- Store out of the reach of children and pets.
- They are so simple to use; just take 2 cloth squares out of the jar.
- Pop them into your tumble dryer at the beginning of your dry cycle.
- When used, simply add them back into the jar and refresh the fluid as needed.
- Wash them through a hot, soapy cycle before using them with a different fragrance oil or blend.
- It is wise to avoid using them with precious and particularly delicate clothes or fabrics like silk.

Room Spray
The biggest mistake that people make when making Room Spray for the first time is that they do not use a dispersant or a preservative. A dispersant is needed to make sure the fragrance oils for the spring cleaning oil are suspended in the liquid solution and do not float to the top.
A preservative is used because a room spray is mostly water. After a while, algae can grow, which can turn your water green, and a preservative stops this in its tracks.
I have chosen to use the green and refreshing aromatics of NO. 1314 - Inspired by: Verveine 32 by Le Labo. It has a deliciously fresh citrus introduction with an invigorating green heart and just a whisper of a musky, earthy base. It’s bright, refreshing, and simply sublime.
If you want a floral note, try pairing it with NO. 38 - Gardenia or NO. 44 - Jasmine. It works wonderfully with those pure white floral aromas.
IFRA Safety:
Room Spray falls under IFRA Category 10B, and it has a maximum dilution rate of 8.33% in this category. This means you can only use up to 8.33ml of NO. 1314 per 100ml of your Room Spray.
You Will Need:
-
- Measuring jug
- Stainless steel spoon
- Bottle funnel
- 120 ml spray bottle
- Oil and waterproof label
Ingredients:
-
- 110 ml of Distilled Water (Aqua)
- 2.4 ml of Polysorbate 20 (Sorbitan monolaurate)
- 6.5 ml of NO. 1314 - Inspired by: Verveine 32 by Le Labo Soaps & Candles fragrance oil
- 1.2 ml Preservative of your choice
Safety:
-
- Not for topical use on the skin.
- Shake well before use.
- Do not spray toward pets or animals, and avoid spraying the areas where they rest and sleep.
- Always make sure that the nozzle is facing away from you when you begin to spray.
- Do not spray on the face or near the eyes. If the solution gets in your eyes, rinse with clean, tepid water and seek medical attention immediately if irritation persists, taking the clearly labeled container with you.
Method:
-
- Measure out and mix your fragrance oil and dispersant according to your manufacturer's instructions.
- Into your measuring jug, measure out your Distilled Water and then add the dispersant/fragrance oil mix and preservative. Mix thoroughly to combine.
- This is the time to check if the fragrance oil has fully dispersed. If some of the oil still floats to the top, add some more dispersant.
- Decant into your 120ml spray bottle using a bottle funnel. Keeping it clean and oil-free helps you label adhere better.
- Attach the spray nozzle and fix it on the cap tightly.
- On an oil and waterproof label, list all of the ingredients for safety.
- It makes sense to add extra instructions to ‘Shake well before use’ and ‘Do not spray near the face and eyes.’
- How To Use:
Before first use, test an inconspicuous spot on soft furnishings. This is why you use a dispersant to make sure no globs of oil end up on your precious soft furnishing fabrics.
We need to be a little cautious when using Room Spray with fragrance oils for spring cleaning around our pets. Please do not spray directly toward your pets, and avoid spraying areas where they prefer to rest or sleep. Simply because tiny droplets of oil could be sitting on the fabric, which could be transferred to their fur. Which they then lick off!
If you have cats, this is especially important. Cats simply do not have the proper liver enzymes to metabolize essential oils. Given that some fragrance oils are also formulated with essential oils, we need to treat them similarly. Get more info with Are Essential Oils Safe For Pets?

Bonus Recipe- Clay Closet Shapes
This brand-new project gives you a chance to get your hands dirty and have a bit of good old fun!
You can use standard clay if you have access to a kiln to dry it. Although you can just let it air dry, it will just be more brittle. Air-dry clay is a great alternative and will be what I am using here because it is more accessible and easy to use. You can even get the kids involved!
IFRA Safety:
Clay Closet Rings fall under IFRA Category 12, which has no maximum dilution rate. This means you can use as much as you like within reason. Be warned, the clay will only hold so much oil, though. You only need a few drops.
You Will Need:
-
- Old cutting board
- Greaseproof paper
- Old rolling pin
- Cookie cutters
- Chopstick
- Hanging ribbon
- Protective gloves
Ingredients:
-
- 1 small pack of Airy Dry Clay (Crayola and DAS brands are great)
- 2 ml of NO. 25 - Clean Cotton Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
Safety:
-
- Wear gloves when applying the fragrance oil
Method:
-
- Open your packet, take out the clay, place it on the board, and roll it out until it is about as thick as a standard pencil.
- Use your cutters to cut out shapes, lift them carefully, and place them onto the greaseproof paper to dry. Use a knife to cut the clay into shapes if you don’t have cookie cutters.
- Use a chopstick to push a hole for the hanging ribbon; don’t do it too close to the edge, or it could split.
- Set aside to dry out for 24-48 hours.
- Add the hanging ribbon to the desired length.
- Once fully dried, pop your gloves on and place a few drops of oil on the clay shape, making sure to evenly disperse it across the surface.
- Carry on until you have scented them all.
- Allow to sink in and dry for at least 12-24 hours.
- How To Use:
- Hang in your closet, making sure it is not touching your clothes. You can also hang them behind picture frames and mirrors for a burst of freshness.
- Keep any extras in an airtight jar until needed.
- You can simply refresh them as needed, but eventually, they won’t soak up any more oil, and that is the point at which to discard them and make new ones.
The Final Word

A Parting Secret… Ssssh.
Ssssh…. I don’t want everyone to know this….. it is a bit personal…. Come in a bit closer so I don’t have to shout. In my last order for fragrance oils for spring cleaning, I had a bottle of NO. 33 - Fresh Cut Roses that leaked just a little. Pants man!
To be fair, it had travelled 4,331 miles to get to me, so to get such a small amount of leakage in a large order is a small miracle in itself really! The oil had soaked into the cardboard box's outer (and made the whole order smell fantastic in the process).
I could have just thrown the oil-soaked cardboard out in the recycling, but instead, I popped it into a zip lock bag. I left it unsealed, just a tiny amount to let the deliciously floral fragrance escape, and I put it in my lingerie drawer.
Oh my, every time I pull anything from the drawer, I get this MASSIVE hint of beautifully fresh roses. So guys, my undergarments smell of roses…. And it lasts all day long!
So, if you leak in any order, don’t panic and despair. Jump for joy a little and decide what drawer/cupboard/shoe box you are going to pop your fragrance oils for spring cleaning in for long-lasting freshness and a blast of glorious scent.
