Scent Profile

NO. 103 - Rich Mahogany has a delightfully fresh and playful introduction and a warm, friendly, and rich finish.

Crisp, juicy orchard apples blended with fresh lavender and spicy pink peppercorns create an intriguing heartspace.

Rich red mahogany rounds out this aroma bringing depth and balance and adding a sophisticated finish to what, otherwise would be a rather playful fragrance oil.

Fragrance Notes

    • Top: Apple
    • Mid: Lavender, Pink Peppercorn
    • Bottom: Red Mahogany

Right Variation

For these skin care for men projects, you need to use the Soaps and Candles variation of NO. 103 - Rich Mahogany. It is professionally designed for creating skin and body care products as well as scented home products like reed diffusers and candles.

Please do not use the Diffuser variation of NO. 103 - Rich Mahogany which is designed only to be used in nebulizing and cold air diffusers.

Quick Stop Safety

When we make skin care for men, they are topical products. IFRA Standards are referees on the field to guarantee safety!

Each individual fragrance oil web page has its IFRA Statement in the DOCUMENTS section in the navigation bar. You can find this about a third of the way down the page.

This IFRA Statement tells you the maximum amount of fragrance oil you can use in each category of designed products. We are making skin care for men. Face care products fall into category 5B. They have a maximum safety dilution rate of 1.39%.

We will also be making cologne. That falls in category 3a. It has a maximum skin safety dilution limit of 1.02%.

This means I can only use up to 1.39 ml of NO.103 in 100 ml of face care-based products. I can use up to 1.02 ml of No. 103  in 100 ml of cologne.

These limits are low, but still give a great strength of scent. These particular safety levels specifically apply to No. 103, so if you did want to bolster them a little, you could add other fragrance oils or essential oils to it. (Their own IFRA safety standard would apply.)

Creating Skin Care For Men.

You Will Need:

For face care products

    • Measuring jugs
    • Bowls
    • Stainless steel spoons
    • Jar and bottle funnel
    • 100 ml bottle
    • 2 x 100 ml jars
    • 1 x wide mouth 1-litre jar
    • Oil and waterproof labels

Gamechanger Face Scrub

Skin care for men begins on a great-looking surface! Face scrubs are like the skin care quarterback to start the game and get the action moving. And as we all know… a great quarterback is a game-changer!

Face scrubs exfoliate; they remove dull old skin to reveal younger, more vital, and healthier cells beneath. Make exfoliation part of your weekly routine, using it no more than 1-2 times a week.

Any salt can be used here, except table salt, because it contains anti-caking agents. Sugar would also work well as long as it feels soft to the touch. Brown sugars are best. Granulation might be a bit rough, even for your rugged face.

I think you will love this revitalizing combination of NO. 103 with a burst of refreshing citrus and a dash of masculine cedarwood.

Ingredients:

Optional

    • Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's instructions, it can elongate the life of your products up to 6 -12 months in some instances.
    • Ground inclusions, like coffee grounds, walnut husks, or peach kernels

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Do not use this scrub over areas of broken or irritated skin.

Method:

    1. Carefully measure out your fragrance oil and essential oils, and mix them into the carrier oil and combine thoroughly.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, combine your salt and sugar until evenly mixed.
    3. Then add the mix of oils and stir thoroughly to ensure all the salt is covered evenly in oil.
    4. It helps to use a jar funnel to decant the face scrub into a wide-mouth jar. Make sure it is one with an airtight lid.
    5. Clean the rim of the jar meticulously. This helps to stop mold or bacteria from forming.
    6. On an oil and waterproof label, be sure to list all ingredients clearly, for obvious safety reasons. This is really important if your partner may be, or is pregnant and if you have young children in the home.
    7. Date the label with an expiry date.

How to Store

This skin care for men recipe should be stored for at least six months, however, you do need to keep it under the right conditions. It may last longer if you use a commercial preservative.

    • Keep it in the dark to reduce light degradation
    • Store at a consistent and ambient temperature to avoid rancidity.
    • Remove the scrub from the jar with a scoop, rather than your fingers, to avoid the transfer of bacteria.

You will smell right away if the oil does go rancid. You could simply discard it but it’s still perfectly ok to scrub the kitchen sink with or remove dirt, debris, and rust from your tools.

How To Use

    1. Darling, you may be rough and rugged, but parts of you can still be sensitive, and therefore don’t ignore me when I suggest doing a  24 - 48 hour patch test on ALL your skin care for men products before their first use. Hives are not a good look!
    2. First, wet the skin with warm water, warm water opens your pores better and allows dirt and dead skin cells to be lifted out and removed. Don’t apply this to dry skin, it will drag the skin too much and won’t be any near as effective as using it on wet skin.
    3. Remember to use a scoop to get the face scrub from the jar to avoid contaminating it with bacteria from your fingers.
    4. Plop it into the palm of your hand and let it warm through a little.
    5. Then apply to the skin and rub in gently, using upward circular motions. You can also do long upward stroking movements. All of this helps to not drag your skin and gets your circulation moving to boost cell renewal.
    6. Rinse the face scrub off thoroughly with warm water.  You can use soap to remove any excess oil if you wish. However, the Witch Hazel in the toner should remove any excess oil in the next step.

Exhilarating Hydration Blast

I’d equate this skin care for men project to a running back screaming down the field at full pelt. Fresh air rushing towards your face, feels refreshing and exhilarating, like a blast of adrenaline.

Women would be bored and call this a toner, but the man version is this ‘Exhilarating Hydration Blast’ for your skin.

Witch Hazel is an astringent that will help remove excess oil, sweep away impurities, and firm up the skin, making it more taut and more youthful looking. Glycerine is a brilliant humectant that takes microdroplets of water from the air and touches them down into your skin cells. I can hear the cheerleaders now! Rah, Rah!

I wanted to add the amazing antioxidant qualities of Rosehip carrier oil, which is also full of linoleic acid and other nourishing fatty acids that fights the signs of aging by regenerating and repairing our skin cells. To do this, we need to add a dispersant to disperse it through the water base, along with the fragrance oil and essential oil.

The addition of magnesium to this particular product for skin care for men helps to re-oxygenate and energize skin cells for clean, fresh skin.

Ingredients:

Optional - Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's instructions, it can elongate the life of your products up to 6 -12 months in some instances.

Safety:

  • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy

Method:

    1. Take your magnesium flakes and dissolve them into the witch hazel.
    2. Once dissolved, add the spring water or a suitable hydrolat like rose water, or orange flower water. Both sandalwood and yarrow hydrolats are wonderful for men's skin.
    3. Combine the fragrance oil and essential oil with the rosehip carrier oil and combine thoroughly.
    4. Add the mixed oils to the polysorbate 20 and mix evenly. Pour this into the water base and combine thoroughly.
    5. There should be no oil floating to the top, if this happens, you need more dispersant so add some more polysorbate 20 until oil no longer floats to the surface.
    6. Decant into a suitable bottle, and label clearly. List all ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
    7. Add the date and expiry date of 3 months. (Longer if you used a preservative, be guided by the manufacturer's instructions).

How To Use

    1. Please don’t skip that 24 -48 hour patch test before first use.
    2. There are two ways to use this, I prefer to place it in a spray bottle and spritz it across my face with my eyes closed. Sometimes, I just let it air dry, but more often than not, I put my moisturizer on right away while it is still damp, to lock in more hydration.
    3. If you feel you have excess oil from a face scrub or your cleanser needs a boost, apply it onto a cotton pad and gently wipe across the skin to remove excess oil, sebum, and impurities. If you have acne, I recommend sticking to this method of application.

Suave and Smooth Moisturizer

Here we go, guys! This suave and smooth moisturizer is your wide receiver scoring a sorely needed touchdown for your face. An exuberant celebration and a body and soul restorative! It’s the piece de resistance in your skincare for men goodies.

This moisturizer is super light and can be applied in a jiffy and you’re ready to go. It’s fast effective skincare in the end zone.

This is packed with skin-nourishing goodness, humectants, and antioxidants. You’ll love the refreshing skin feel of this cream.

Ingredients:

Optional - Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's instructions, it can elongate the life of your products up to 6 -12 months in some instances.

Safety:

  • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy

Method:

    1. Combine the NO. 103 Soaps & Candles fragrance oil, essential oils, and rosehip carrier oil together.
    2. Into a large bowl, measure out the aqueous cream.
    3. Add the oil mix into the bowl, and combine thoroughly.
    4. Add the glycerine and rosewater.
    5. Check the consistency is to your liking. You can add more or less water to suit your own preferences. If you feel it is too runny, add a dollop of more aqueous cream.
    6. Mix really well for a couple of minutes, to make sure everything is evenly distributed.
    7. Should you see any oils floating to the top, it is not viscous enough to hold the oils, so add a bit more aqueous cream until the oil stops rising to the top.
    8. Using a jar funnel, decant into the jar and add the lid immediately.
    9. Add an oil and waterproof label and be sure to list all ingredients for safety.
    10. Add the production date and expiry date of 3 months, unless you use a preservative. Be guided by the manufacturer's instructions.

How To Use

    1. Patch test, patch test, patch test, please!
    2. Use this after you have cleaned and toned your skin. You can also apply it to clean, dry skin if your skin feels dry or taut.
    3. Apply the moisturizer to the skin in small circular upward motions, don’t drag the skin, if the skin drags, add a little more moisturizer.
    4. If my skin feels dry, I add it liberally without rubbing it in too much and just let it sink in on its own accord. If there is any excess I just massage it into my skin. Follow with serum or our Rough and Rugged Face Protection Cream from your skin care for men range.

Rough and Rugged Face Protection

This is like the defensive end for your face. Where everyone works hard to keep out any unwanted attacks. In this case, the attacks are from the great outdoors and everything it brings, like the cold and the wind.

If you work outside or in environments that are dusty, dirty, or oily, this thicker, more protective cream will be a godsend for you. It is an important part of your skin care for men because it is rich in wax and will form an ultra-thin barrier of protection over your skin. It will help keep out unwanted debris and dirt from your skin and lock in hydration, especially if you use it over your Suave and Smooth Moisturizer.

I’ve rammed as much unctuous goodness as I can in this to defend your skin and win the game against skin damage. Roman Chamomile essential oil, soothes dry skin and inflammation. Patchouli also soothes and nourishes skin wonderfully, it’s especially useful on dry skin.

You Will Need - Extras:

    • Microwave-proof PYREX jug
    • Immersion blender or hand mixer.

Ingredients:

Optional - Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer's instructions, it can elongate the life of your products up to 6 -12 months in some instances.

Safety:

  • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy

Method:

    1. Normally, I never advocate the use of microwaves for melting cosmetic butter in your skincare for men, because it can get too hot and degrade your butter. Yet, we are making such a small amount here, that it is a more convenient option for you.
    2. Place your beeswax and cosmetic butter into the PYREX measuring jug and place in the middle of the microwave, heat in small bursts, preferably 10-20 seconds at a time but some microwaves will only do 30-second increments.
    3. Stir to help things melt between microwave bursts and make sure nothing gets too hot or you risk scorching and burning them.
    4. As soon as they are all molten, add the carrier oils and glycerine and pop them in the microwave again for 30 seconds to warm up the oils.
    5. Remove from the microwave, and add your NO. 103 fragrance oil and essential oils into the mix and stir thoroughly.
    6. Use an immersion blender to mix the cream to a lovely thick unctuous finish and evenly disperse all the oils through the cream.
    7. You can adjust the consistency to your preference. Add more hard butters for a thicker cream, and more wax for a heavier waterproof finish. You can slacken it off with more oil, but go easy as you don’t want it to end up too oily on your face. You could always try adding some glycerin instead.
    8. Add the date and expiry date of 3 months, longer if you used a preservative,

How To Use

    1. Don’t forget that 24 -48 hour patch test!
    2. Apply to face lightly with your fingertips, working in upward circular motions.
    3. It is very effective when used over moisturizer or serum.
    4. This makes a really useful barrier cream for your hands too, especially if they are in and out of water all day. Double or triple the wax content if you need heavier-duty barrier hand cream.

Super Bowl Cologne

I know this isn’t strictly a project on skin care for men but I wanted to give you a bonus recipe and I saved the best until last.

This is like Coach, a torrent of exhilarating and invigorating energy just when you need it most. A refreshing and energizing boost, the perfect way to start your game, or even just your day!

Now, colognes do benefit from some maturation time, at least three months. However, you could use this right away, you just need to add some carrier oil to soften the alcohol down.

If you are interested in making your own cologne or reading why it needs maturation time, pop on over to Craft Your Scent: Cologne With Essential Oils.

It’s so easy to make your own aftershaves and colognes with our designer Soaps and Candles fragrance oil range. Of course, you can use this same base recipe to create more bespoke colognes and aftershaves using VINEVIDA fragrance oils and essential oils.

Remember, cologne falls in category 3a and NO. 103 has a maximum skin safety dilution limit of 1.02% in this section.

You Will Need - Extra:

    • Glass mixing containers (or disposable containers)
    • Glass fragrance bottle

Ingredients:

    • 60 ml of Perfumers Alcohol (Ethanol, Isopropyl myristate, Monopropylene glycol)
    • 10 ml of Coconut (MCT) carrier oil (Cocos nucifera)
    • 25 ml of Distilled Water (Aqua)

5% Fragrance Concentrate made up of:

Safety:

  • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

Method:

    1. Start by combining your fragrance concentrate and Coconut (MCT) carrier oil into a glass container
    2. Carefully measure out your perfumer’s alcohol, add to the glass container, and stir thoroughly.
    3. It is perfectly normal for it to look cloudy at first, it will settle down and return to being clear.
    4. Lastly, measure out your distilled water, add it to the mix, and combine well until everything appears evenly distributed.
    5. Always use a funnel to make your life easier and cut down on waste and decant into a 100 ml glass fragrance bottle of your choice.
    6. Again it is really important to label it clearly and list all ingredients for safety reasons
    7. You need to be patient for at least 24 hours and allow your cologne to sit before use.
    8. If you can bear to, it is best left for up to 6 weeks to fully mature.

How To Use

You know what I’m going to say right? Patch test your skin care for men please and your cologne too!

Depending on your bottle type, either:

    1. Open neck bottle - Pour a small amount into the palm of your hand and splash between your hands. Gently pat it onto your face and allow it to dry naturally.
    2. Spray bottle -  Simply spray behind your ears on your neck and at your wrists.
      • Avoid your eyes. If you do happen to get it in your eyes, rinse well with clean water. If irritation persists, seek immediate medical advice, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.
      • Store your Cologne in a dark, cool, ambient place. By reducing the amount of light it is exposed to, it will help it to last longer.
      • Use it up within 6 - 12 months.
