Causes Of Itchy Skin
There are a whole host of reasons why we might experience itchy skin. Some people have continual issues, other people just from time to time. It pays to think our way around that a bit before designing an essential oil recipe for itchy skin.
Barrier Function Imbalance
Skin irritation is usually a sign that there is an issue with the barrier function of our skin. Restoring and maintaining this is vital for skin healing. Breakages in the skin can lead to water loss, and therefore dryness. Conversely, dehydration can also reduce the efficacy of the skin’s barrier function.
When the skin’s barrier function is working as it should, it protects the skin keeping it moisturized and nourished. If the barrier deteriorates the skin can no longer retain moisture, keep out pollutants, or protect the rest of the body. Dehydration and dry skin also mean we are more susceptible to irritations and allergic reactions, both of which can itch!
To take care of your skin well, give it a ‘drink’ with a good lotion or moisturizer when it is thirsty to keep it hydrated. Feed it well and nourish it carefully with carrier oils and cosmetic butter.
Soothe itching and dryness with hydrating oils such as Rose, Rose Geranium, and Frankincense.

Allergies & Inflammation
When it comes to the best essential oil recipe for itchy skin we need to consider the role that inflammation plays in contributing to the itch.
Are you experiencing allergies to food, environmental pollutants, or even topical products like handwash or washing detergent? Allergens will create inflammation and the itch is simply a symptom of that inflammation. That is when we need to look to essential oils with anti-inflammatory properties for your essential oil recipe for itchy skin, which will reduce inflammation and subsequently, soothe the associated itch.
Roman Chamomile, German Chamomile, Geranium, and Frankincense essential oils are all great candidates here.
Bug bites are the perfect example of an allergy-related irritation. You can see the red, itchy, inflamed skin for yourself. By using anti-inflammatory essential oils you can relieve itching and soothe irritated skin. It helps with bug bites if it also has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties as well, to kill any infection and heal the skin.
Tea Tree and Lavender are perfect choices and if there seems to be a reaction to histamine, tackle it with Melissa essential oil.

Eczema, Psoriasis & Atopic Dermatitis
Skin conditions like Eczema, Psoriasis, and Atopic Dermatitis all arise from an imbalance in the skin barrier function. They can be linked to genetics, stress, environmental pollutants, and our lifestyle. We can also cater to these conditions in our essential oil recipe for itchy skin.
In my clinical experience, Psoriasis is closely linked to stress and unhappiness in life. When I met my husband, his legs were covered in Psoriasis. As our relationship advanced and his life settled and he became happy (and with a bucket load of Mom’s Psoriasis ointment), the psoriasis disappeared completely. The moment he is stressed, up it pops and out comes the ointment.
We may never understand the ‘root’ of our skin conditions, but that does not mean that we cannot ease the discomfort and reduce the itching of our irritated skin.
Now, I would use different essential oils for itching to essential oils for skin rashes, because I want to target the core issues and the symptoms with the active benefits and chemical constituents of essential oils.
Tash’s Top Essential Oil Picks For Itchy Skin Conditions
Eczema - I’d always choose Egyptian Geranium here for its ability to destress and improve the texture of the skin and improve hydration associated with eczema
Psoriasis - Cajeput is the master of cooling and soothing, especially where the skin is hot and feels ‘on fire’. It makes a great pain reliever too, as it has analgesic qualities.
Atopic Dermatitis - German Chamomile is fabulous at soothing that itch that drives you crazy, thanks to the active benefits of chamazulene. Thank you chamazulene!
You can use these essential oils in combination with the ones recommended further on in your
essential oil recipe for itchy skin. But if you can only afford one essential oil for your condition, go with my tried and tested suggestions.

Neuropathic Itch
Neuropathic itch is chronic itching that can be quite persistent as it is caused by ‘damage, or dysfunction to preceptors’, Auyeung (2023). These are the nerves that are involved in itch transmission. Often, it can feel like the skin is burning or stinging as well. The most common cause of it is shingles.
It is the itch that cannot be scratched.
You cannot scratch it away, because the itch is not triggered by external stimuli, it simply happens spontaneously. (Anytime, anywhere)!
It happened to me after nerve damage related to a back injury and for years after, I scratched myself until I bled. NOTHING worked until I put Marjoram essential oil in my bath water one night to help me sleep. It was like a miracle.
Marjoram essential oil has nervine qualities that stop the nerves from spiking and jangling, which is just what you want here in your essential oil recipe for itchy skin. Something to soothe those nerve endings and quieten them down.
Just last week, I had an episode, and out came the Marjoram. It had it under control in an hour or so. It’s magic!
(As an aside, I also found a gel manicure smoothed the ends of my fingernails and I did less damage to my skin by scratching myself. If you are scratching yourself to bits, get gels or acrylic overlays over your own nails to help.)
Hormones
Our hormones are not always our best friend. Through puberty, they can go a bit wappy and imbalances can contribute to acne, which can itch when the skin is healing.
However, through perimenopause and menopause, we can experience itchy skin with seemingly no underlying skin condition or good reason. This is when those hidden hormones are at play. It can manifest as just itchy skin, but also dryness in the vagina, which can be extremely itchy, especially at night. Applying diluted essential oils to the abdomen and thighs can help.
Essential oils with constituents associated with hormone balancing like Ylang Ylang, Rose, and Clary Sage can be especially useful for us at this time to address the core symptom. Again, pair it with an essential oil to address the itch itself as well, for a powerhouse effect in your personal essential oil recipe for itchy skin.

Infections
An essential oil recipe for itchy skin can be extremely helpful when we have picked up an infection like Chicken Pox, Impetigo, or even Scabies, all of which are ridiculously itchy!
Mandarin essential oil is perfect for addressing the ‘itch you need to scratch’ with chickenpox in children and Shingles in adults. Find a soothing recipe here.
I don’t know how I did it but I always seemed to get 2 or 3 infections of Impetigo every year as a kid. Probably because I was a scab picker and as a tomboy, I was always bashed, bruised, and scabbily kneed! Staphylococcus aureus is the culprit to blame. Early scientific evidence suggests Helichrysum may be helpful.
Essential oils for itchy skin can also be useful for scabies and other parasitic infections. According to Bezbah (2022) tea trees reduce ectoparasites as well as the instances of kids scratching scabies infections which lead to impetigo.
When you design your own essential oil recipe for itchy skin, when appropriate, try to include essential oils like cinnamon bark or tea tree to tackle the underlying infection itself as well as essential oils to address the itching.
Best Essential Oils For Itchy Skin
When it comes to perfecting the essential oil recipe for itchy skin, we have an interesting array of essential oils with soothing properties that we can choose from. Properly diluted and applied onto the affected area they can provide itch relief and promote healing.
If you need to heal wounds caused by scratching, make sure that you choose essential oils with antimicrobial and antiseptic properties to reduce the chances of infection and speed up the healing process.
Always use quality essential oils and try to source organic versions where possible, especially when dealing with sensitive, irritated, and itchy skin.
German Chamomile
German Chamomile is one of the best essential oils for itchy skin because of a chemical constituent called Chamazulene. It belongs to the azulene group of chemicals which have almost anesthetic effects. Liz calls it ‘Liquid anesthetic’ because it will soothe the area and even numb it a little. Just what we want!
The presence of azulene gives it far greater anti-inflammatory qualities than Roman Chamomile (Lawless, 1992). Not only will it numb and soothe, but decreasing the inflammation is key to reducing the itch and restoring the skin's barrier function.
German Chamomile essential oil also has anti-allergenic properties that make it useful when we have allergic skin conditions. It is bactericidal, so can ward off bacteria, like Staphylococcus aureus that can cause Impetigo.
Interestingly, it also has nerve sedative properties that may prove useful in Neuropathic Itch in the same way that Marjoram does.
As an aside, when I was thinking about this article about the perfect essential oil recipe for itchy skin, I found myself procrastinating a bit in my favorite Pinterest haunt. Everyone is super excited by Blue Tansy essential oil. I was very tempted to buy some until I realized it has the price tag of a small house! Liz recently did a podcast about Blue Tansy on YouTube with Adam Barralet. She talks about how other blue oils, German Chamomile, and yarrow are comparative choices of essential oils for itchy skin.

Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis L.)
Roman Chamomile essential oil is the ‘Super Soother’ for you because it is composed mainly of esters. Esters are renowned for being calming and promoting skin healing. Alongside, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic properties.
It is particularly useful at soothing, cooling, and relieving itchy skin thanks to analgesic, anti-neuralgic, and nerve sedative properties. However, it's the anti-inflammatory properties that can really come to the fore in our essential oil recipe for itchy skin and make a difference.
Just a few drops of chamomile oils can have quite profound effects on your skin. Include at least one of them in your essential oil recipe for itchy skin

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender essential oil, is always here somewhere, right?
That is because Lavender oil is such a useful tool in your essential oil recipe for itchy skin. Aromatherapists will often use Lavender essential oil in topical applications for pruritus, rash relief, and wound healing. It offers an array of active properties and benefits associated with soothing, calming, and healing.
Addressing itching naturally, with essential oils like Lavender, means that we can often reduce the need to rely on skin-thinning steroids and prescription medications. Essential oils for itchy skin offer a more natural alternative.
Lavender offers properties that are analgesic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, nervine, parasiticide, and sedative. Perfect for preventing potential infections from scratching and reducing the itch.
However, we do need to use Lavender with a little caution if our skin is overly dehydrated. Lavender essential oil can be quite drying and dry our skin out even further. So avoid it if your skin feels taut, tight, or overly dry.
Remember though, you can make use of these drying actions if one of your kids has that vile weeping impetigo (I remember it only too well). As it will dry up all that yukky pus and weeping fluid. Perfecto!

Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens)
Geranium essential oil is ideal for your essential oil recipe for itchy skin if you have an Eczema rash and the associated itchiness.
While it is not the best essential oil to stop itching, it is wonderful for soothing, and conditioning the skin and helping to restore that all-important barrier function. Use it in conjunction with German or Roman Chamomile essential oils for itch relief.
Now you could argue that either Geranium will do, but if you look at the Egyptian Geranium GCMS Data & Rose Geranium GCMS Data you will see there are stark differences in the chemical constituents.
Egyptian Geranium oil has a significant Geraniol content of 13.63%. Geraniol is useful for us here as it has potential analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities. We can use that to relieve pain but also balance our emotions and relax us in times of stress, which tends to exacerbate eczema and eczema-like conditions.
It also contains constituents like 10-Epi-gamma-eudesmol which has properties that are anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. Geranyl acetate offers similar skin-healing properties and is effective in reducing inflammation and redness and soothing skin irritations. Since it is so prolific in promoting cell regeneration it is often used in commercial skincare preparations to enhance the appearance of the skin and promote overall skin health.

Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
If you want an effective essential oil recipe for itchy skin to deal with Neuropathic Itch then Marjoram needs to be in it for sure!
Personally, I have been using the nervine properties of Marjoram for years. I use it to help me sleep when I have restless arms and legs, it soothes the nerves and stops them spiking. It is just this action that made it a game changer to my neuropathic itch.
Appropriately diluted and applied topically it can work to soothe itchy skin associated with neuropathy in as little as twenty minutes. It takes that long to be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, so that’s about as quick as it gets!
It’s a game changer for the ‘itch that cannot be scratched’. Don’t scratch it, Marjoram it.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Any essential oil recipe for itchy skin will benefit from the inclusion of Tea Tree essential oil.
The Tea tree (plant) is by the First Nations of Australia in their herbal medicine practices in a multitude of ways.
The more concentrated Tea Tree essential oil offers us a myriad of powerful properties and bug-busting actions. Anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, antifungal, parasiticide, and then to top it all it is also an immuno-stimulant. What more could you want in a few drops of essential oil?
Tea tree oil might not often be associated with skin rashes, but we need to look at the root causes of the skin rashes in the first place. Are they due to a bacterial infection or a parasite like Scabies? This is when the Tea Tree can come into its own in our essential oil recipe for itchy skin.
Tea Tree oil is also particularly good and gentle enough for skin conditions like Nappy Rash, making it an ideal essential oil for even the most delicate of skin.

Best Supporting Ingredients For Itchy Skin
Your perfect essential oil recipe for itchy skin is going to need some nutrient-rich companions, bursting with active ingredients to provide effective bases, in which to mix your essential oil blend. Here’s what I recommend.
Carrier Oils
Carrier oils aren’t an afterthought or just a diluting agent, they are an active ingredient in their own right.
Essential oils are effective for soothing itchy skin, but we can improve our essential oil recipe for itchy skin by combining essential oils and carrier oils together. This way we get the active benefits and properties of both kinds of oil.
We never want to apply essential oil directly to our itchy skin, we want to dilute them in a carrier oil or base. When you mix an essential oil with a carrier oil and apply it topically, the carrier oil does just what its name suggests, it ‘carries’ it deep through the skin and into our bloodstreams.
Carrier oils may provide soothing relief all of their own. Try Tamanu for infected and itchy skin. Jojoba for dry and dehydrated skin. Argan is a wonderful carrier oil that hydrates parched skin and hair.
To repair barrier function choose carrier oils that are rich in Linoleic Acid like Rosehip and Sea Buckthorn, they are bright orange, radiate light, and sunshine, and are a blessing for your skin.
Carrier Oils high in Linoleic acid are wonderful for repairing the skin, encouraging cell regeneration and renewal, and fostering velvety smooth, healthy-looking skin. Rosehip and Sea Buckthorn oils have very high levels of Linoleic Acid, make these your best friends. You will find them super nourishing for your skin and high in lipids and essential fatty acids. Everything your skin needs to maintain a balanced barrier function.
The Ultimate Guide to Skincare for Sensitive Skin: Top Tips for a Radiant Glow goes into the importance of the barrier function and goes into the causes of sensitive skin which are similar to the causes of itchy skin as well.
Cosmetic Butters
Cosmetic Butters are super rich, full of nourishment and skin hydrating qualities. They make a wonderful companion for your essential oil recipe for itchy skin.
You can use your essential oil blend and Cosmetic Butters to make soothing Balms and Salves, as well as Body Butters, Luxe Cremé, and Nourishing Creams.
Use Shea or Cupucau butter to make beautifully rich moisturizers and body lotions that will calm your itch, soothe your skin, and leave your skin feeling hydrated and nourished.
Combining essential oils with Cosmetic Butters needs a little caution when you have to melt them. Heat can degrade the quality and efficacy of essential oils, so wait for the butter to cool as much as possible before adding your essential oils.
Hydrosols and Flower Waters
Use essential oils alongside the delicate freshness of floral waters and hydrosols like water and Orange Flower Water. They can give your essential oil recipe for itchy skin a real boost of hydration using these gorgeous waters.
Hydrosol is a by-product of the distillation process and they are gaining in popularity in their own right as a therapeutic product. I recently purchased a Lemon Thyme Hydrosol it is very refreshing on the skin and it feels cleaner, renewed, and glows after a quick spritz.
Both Rosewater and Orange Flower Water are wonderful soothing and refreshing on hot, inflamed, and itchy skin. But try Sandalwood, Yarrow, and Frankincense hydrosols as wonderfully soothing alternatives.
Glycerine
While some essential oils provide hydration to parched and dry skin, we can pair them with humectants to really up the ante.
A humectant will literally attract moisture from the air, grab it, and plop it rather beautifully into our skin cells. How kind! How great!
Therefore, we can use humectants like Glycerine, or even Honey, in our essential oil recipe for itchy skin to boost hydration, alleviate dryness, and improve the barrier function of the skin.
If you have dry, tight, or taut skin, don’t skimp on these, put them top of your list.
Oats
Yes! You read that right, Oats!
Go searching for any commercial products to address dry itchy skin and you’ll soon find a handful of products using Oats, or more specifically, Colloidal Oatmeal, as an active ingredient.
Colloidal Oatmeal is very effective at alleviating dry, itchy skin with its soothing and moisturizing properties. It’s packed with anti-inflammatory properties too which is just what we want. Anti-inflammatory activities of colloidal oatmeal (Avena sativa).
It can help to create a protective layer over the skin, which boosts the skin's natural barrier function helps the skin retain moisture, and reduces dehydration. That barrier function also protects us from nasties, like irritants, allergens, and microbes!
Skincare created with your essential oil recipe for itchy skin can additionally benefit from Colloidal Oatmeal. Try it in light Lotions and Moisturisers, but I find it most effective in the bath. It’s beautifully soothing. Look out for my article next week all about Oat Bath Soaks.

How To Use Essential Oil Recipe For Itchy Skin
Now you have created your perfect essential oil recipe for itchy skin, how do you use it?
Patch Test
Well, first it is important to do a patch test and make sure your skin will tolerate your essential oil recipe for itchy skin. It is always worth it if you have hyper-sensitive skin, patch testing each ingredient first to throw up any potential culprits! It can save you from making expensive mistakes.
Simply dilute one drop of your essential oil recipe for itchy skin in a tsp of carrier oil and dot it on your wrist or inner elbow and monitor for 24-48 hours for any redness, irritation or adverse reaction. If all is well…. Move on!
Topical Application
When you have diluted your essential oil recipe for itchy skin appropriately, you may use it on your skin.
Apply it to the affected skin and rub it in gently. I like to add a little extra lotion or moisturizer and just let it sit on my skin to absorb as much as it needs. Then I rub the rest in, if there is any excess I gently remove it with a paper towel. This is a good way to give your dry, parched skin ‘a drink’.
If your skin is particularly sore and itchy, be wary of how much you rub it in, you don’t want to exacerbate it, so choose light, water-based lotions that will absorb very easily. You can always give it a thin layer of body oil or body butter over the top for extra nourishment after.
It does pay to have a range of products for your skin depending on your needs.
Do not use the essential oil recipe for itchy skin, even in a base, on intimate areas or internally.

Altogether you will need 5 Oz (142g) of Cosmetic Butter(s) and 2.5 Oz (71g) of liquid carrier oils. Always have an extra 0.25 Oz (7g) of extra oils in case a softer texture is needed. For a 1% dilution rate, you want approximately 45 drops of essential oil. However, all 5ml of your essential oil recipe for itchy skin is perfectly safe in such a large volume.
- 3 oz of Cupuacua Butter (Theobroma grandiflorum)
- 2 oz of Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii)
- 1.5 oz of Jojoba Carrier Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)
- 1 oz of Rosehip Carrier Oil (Rosa Canina)
- 5 ml of essential oil recipe for itchy skin oil blend
Optional - Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer instructions on how much to use and when
Safety:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy
Method:
- Consult the manufacturer's instructions if you are including a preservative.
Warming The Butter and Oil
- Set the double boiler to pre-warm over low to medium heat.
- Weigh out your cosmetic butters and your carrier oils.
- Once the double boiler is warmed through add your cosmetic butter and let it warm slowly through until it is molten. Don’t introduce too much heat, low and slow is best.
- As soon as it is molten, add your carrier's oil and warm for a minute.
- Remove the mix from the heat, and pour it into the bowl or measuring jug.
Cooling The Butter and Oil
- Set aside allowing it to cool slightly for a few minutes.
- Then place in the refrigerator until it turns opaque but is not set hard.
- The mixture needs to be relatively solid, not still liquid. However, you don’t want it to be so hard that you can do nothing with it.
Mixing & Adjusting
- Grab your hand mixer and set it to a mid-range speed and then beat the mix for a couple of minutes, notch the speed up if needed.
- Now, carefully add your essential oils and whip your product to a delightfully fluffy texture with a handheld mixer on full speed.
- If it feels a bit stiff you can add more carrier oils and add it slowly, a tsp at a time. Don’t forget it will thicken slightly more, as it settles.
Jarring and Labeling
- Scrape every last glorious morsel from the bowl into the jar with a silicon spatula, don’t waste any!
- Fill your jars, cover them with a soft clean cloth and allow to cool fully before securing the lids firmly.
- After 24 hours, just do a quick visual check, making sure they have not sunk back too much. This can happen if you introduce too much air into the mix with the handheld mixer.
- Check too that the texture has remained the same and is to your liking.
- List all of the ingredients clearly on an oil and waterproof label and add a production date and a 6 month expiry date. Unless you use a preservative which will give you 12 months.
How To Use:
- Ensure that you do a 24 - 48 patch test before slathering yourself in it please.
- You can use a scoop to get the Body Butter from the jar. A scoop saves you introducing bacteria or dirt from your fingers in the cream, which will help it last longer.
- Apply the Body Butter where needed and rub it gently into the skin.
- Because this is so rich, don't use it anymore than a couple of times a day.
- If your skin is extra dry, use it everyday, but if it isn't, use this every 2-3 days.

Bonus Recipe - Soothing Oat Bath
I wanted to give you this bonus recipe utilizing your essential oil recipe for itchy skin in such an easy and effective way!
I’ll be writing about this in the next couple of weeks, so look out for a dedicated article all about Oat Bath Soaks. Why not sign up for the newsletter so you don’t miss out?
Colloidal Oatmeal would be best, but let’s be real here, if you have rolled Oats or Oatmeal in your cupboard, you can use that instead and get amazing results. I very often just buy a big bag of Oats and use those, it’s fine!
Just check the ingredients, if it says 100% Oats, use it! If there are any other ingredients, don’t use it.
You Will Need:
- Large bowl
- Measuring jug
- Stainless steel spoon
- Jar funnel
- Large, wide-mouth jar with an air-tight seal
- Oil and waterproof label
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of Colloidal Oatmeal, Oatmeal or Rolled Oats (Avena sativa kernel extract (Oat))
- ¼ cup of Jojoba Carrier Oil (Simmondsia chinensis)
- ¼ cup of Rosehip Carrier Oil (Rosa Canina)
- 5 ml of essential oil recipe for itchy skin oil blend
Optional - Preservative of your choice - follow the manufacturer instructions on how much to use and when. However, you are dealing with a foodstuff, so a preservative is only going to stretch this from 3-4 days to a week max. It’s barely worth it to be honest.
Safety:
- Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy
Method:
- Combine your carrier oil and your essential oil recipe for itchy skin oil blend in a measuring jug and mix well for a couple of minutes to make sure the essential oils are evenly distributed. This is really important.
- Measure out the Oats into a large bowl and pour in the oil mix.
- Work the oil through the Oats until they are evenly coated in the oil. I find it easier to do this with my hands, but wear gloves to do this please.
- Decant into an airtight jar with a jar funnel and clean the rim meticulously to discourage mold.
- List all ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.
- Use within 3-4 days, storing it in the refrigerator can help. You’ll smell it if it has gone off. If you are going to pop it in the fridge LABEL IT! You don’t want someone to think it is overnight oats!
How To Use:
- Dilute a tsp in a liter of warm water and do a 24 - 48 patch test please.
- Tie a ¼ cup of the oats into a piece of fine knit muslin, or even into an old sock! I also have a large metal tea infuser, which is perfect for this.
- Then place it into the running bath and leave it in while you have a bath. I tie mine onto the faucet out of the way. Bathe as normal, but stay in the bath at least 20 minutes to absorb all the goodness from the essential oils, carrier oil and oats.
- Remove when finished and dispose of the sodden oats, wash your fabric or infuser, ready to use again.
- Not got a bath? Dilute one tbsp of the oats, per one liter of hot water and allow to infuse for several minutes. Then simply rinse your skin with this after your shower. Work it into the skin by massaging it to really get the benefit of it. Don’t rinse.
- I love making some of this up and wiping it gently around my face to take the itch out of the Roseca I’m currently trying to address.
