NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil Showcase
Well, autumn is definitely in full swing. The leaves are changing color and billowing off the trees in those brisk gusts of wind.
The calendar clicks over to October and the countdown to Hallowe’en begins.
An Hallowe’en with an apostrophe, because I’m old school and British. It is the shortened version of All Hallow’s Eve = Hallow evening = Hallowe’en.
These days apostrophe is more often than not dropped, but I like the old version that speaks of the veil between the world becoming thinner.
Hallowe’en is celebrated everywhere with carved pumpkins. But when we were kids in England it was more likely to be rutabagas (or Swedes as we call them) because pumpkins weren’t really that common here. They were really hard to carve too! I’m surprised we have all our fingers left!
So, in the run-up to Hallowe’en, we want to get you prepared in time for the big day and what better way than with a bit of Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil?
Let’s take a look at this unmistakably classic scent profile.
Juicy Pumpkin, wrapped in deliciously warm spices, dustings of Cinnamon Sugar, and then wisps of Coffee beautifully deepen the profile.
Pure, simple, and perfect for your fall home and Halloween celebrations.

Diffuser Blends With NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice
Before we get stuck, please double-check check you have the right type of fragrance oil for your diffuser.
IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends
Diffuser Blends appear in IFRA Category 12, NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice fragrance oil in this category carries no safety restrictions.
Method:
- All you need to do is measure out your fragrance oils and/or essential oils into a small measuring jug and mix them together well.
- The trick to making your label stick is to keep the bottle as clean and as oil-free as possible, so use a funnel for this.
- Decant your diffuser blend into your 10 ml dropper bottle.
- Good clear labeling on an oil and waterproof label is crucial, as your oils are undiluted and present a safety hazard. So, for obvious safety reasons, list all of the ingredients and clearly mark the label as ‘UNDILUTED’.
- Date your label, adding a 12-month expiry date as well.
How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:
- For specific advice on your own diffuser, please consult your manufacturer's instructions.
- Not sure if you need to dilute your blend? Seek guidance in your manufacturer's instructions.

Fall Perfect Diffuser Blends With NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice
Dia De Los Muertos Fragrant Offering To The Ancestors
Pumpkin is one of the traditional offerings left on home altars to entice the ancestors.
Altars tend to be decorated with bright orange Marigolds and homemade dishes like tortillas, tamales, and mole. This blend can be used to make scented candles for your home altar too. Incense, especially Copal, is also a popular offering, so let’s include some incense notes too.
Vanilla quite literally reacts in our brain in a way that induces feelings of comfort, safety, and security in us. Perfect for when we feel like we need to embrace ourselves a little.
If you have Calendula absolute or Marigold essential oil, by all means, add a couple of drops for their wonderful energy.
Use all around the home for Dia De Los Muertos and beyond.

Hallowe’en Envy
Now, this will create neighbor envy. (Sorry, not sorry!) If you want to set yourself ahead of the crowd and have something truly bespoke, then this is the one for you. Whether you choose to share your secret, or not, is entirely up to you.
The secret is to carefully balance those lovely food and drink aromas that we turn to as soon as the air starts to chill- Apple Pie, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Hot Milk - then balance the sweetness with some spice, and a dash of wood, then cut through the sugar with a zing of Orange.
This may seem like a number of ingredients, but it is well worth it. You can always swap out the NO. 21 - Cedarwood & Amber for Cedarwood essential oil, but I like the richness the Amber brings.
Use this all around the home, through Hallowe’en and beyond. It will last you all season through. (And drive your neighbors crazy with desire…maybe)!
Ingredients:
- 4 ml of NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil
- 1 ml of NO. 2 - Apple Hot Baked Pie Fragrance Oil
- 1 ml of NO. 55 - Oatmeal Milk Fragrance Oil
- 1 ml of NO. 21 - Cedarwood & Amber Fragrance Oil
- 20 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil (Citrus Sinensis L)
- 20 drops of Ginger Essential Oil (Zingiber Officinale)
- 15 drops of Cardamon Essential Oil (Elettaria Cardamomum)
- 5 drops of Vanilla Oleoresin Oil (Vanilla Planifolia)
Safety:
- Not designed for use on the skin.

Take a giant juicy Pumpkin and layer it with spices for a sensational effect.
Make your own blend, and start warming things up with Ginger, Nutmeg, and the orange tones of Cardamom. Then ramp things up a notch with the heavy hitters like Cinnamon and Clove. If it gets too heady, balance it out with an orange citrus, Sweet Orange, Mandarin or Tangerine will all work well.
I also thought I’d add a little air of fruity mystery thanks to the Fig in NO. 1206.
Again, perfect anywhere in the home throughout the season.

- 1 ml of NO. 1206 - Inspired by: Philosykos by Diptyque Fragrance Oil

Here are some ideas to get you started:
Putting Things In Winter Storage?
A couple of weeks ago we made Wardrobe Fresheners and Moth Be Gone Spray to help us keep our clothes in tip-top condition through Winter storage. Last week, we built on that by learning how to infuse Cedarwood and Wool Balls to give an extra layer of protection against moths.
NO. 65 is perfect in your wardrobe right now! Why not give some of those Wardrobe Fresheners a go?
Reed Diffuser
I’m going to give you a super quick recipe for Reed Diffusers and then link you to a few easy projects, so you can have a home filled with glorious Pumpkin Spice from top to bottom.
The most common mistake people make when making Reed Diffusers is misunderstanding what ingredients you need to create your base fluid. Find out everything you need to know here How To Make Reed Diffuser With Fragrance Oils & Essential Oils.
IFRA Safety
NO. 65 in IFRA Category 10A has maximum safety restrictions of 2.74%.
This means that in 100mg of Reed Diffuser Base, you can use 2.74ml of NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Soaps and Candles fragrance oil. Since that is not a great deal for a product that needs intensity of fragrance, we are going to bolster it with another fragrance oil or essential oil.
You Will Need:
- Measuring jug
- Funnel
- Stainless steel spoon
- Reeds, preferably natural
- A suitable 120 ml narrow-neck bottle for your reed diffuser (Read the article linked above)
- Label
Ingredients:
- 20 ml Grapeseed Carrier Oil (Vitis Vinifera)
- 10 ml Glycerine (Glycerol)
- 50 ml Perfumers Alcohol (Ethanol, Isopropyl Myristate, Monopropylene Glycol) CAUTION: FLAMMABLE!
- 2.4 ml of NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
- 100 drops of Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus Reticulata)
Safety:
- Not for topical use.
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets (and wagging tails).
- Protect your surfaces with a coaster, mat, or suitable covering.
Method:
- Measure out your Grapeseed and Glycerine into the jug.
- Add your fragrance oil and essential oil and mix thoroughly.
- Now add your Perfumer's Alcohol. However, do it nice and slowly to get them to homogenize together. It is always worth taking your time with this section. After all, you don’t want it to split in the bottle.
- Use a funnel to help keep your bottle clean, and decant it all into your bottle.
- On an oil and waterproof label, clearly list all ingredients for safety purposes. You must add the type, proof, and percentage of alcohol that you used for safety reasons.
- Be sure to date it as well and give it a 6-12 month expiry date.
- Pop your reeds into the bottle, allowing them to soak up the solution.
- Position your reed diffuser in good airflow to enable the scent to fill your space effectively.
How to Use:
- Protect your surface with a coaster or mat.
- Place in good airflow to help waft the scent.
- Make sure it is out of the reach of children and pets, watch out for waggy dog tails and jumping cats!
- Flips your reeds regularly and replenish as necessary.
- Replace your reeds every so often and refresh your bottle occasionally, especially if it looks dusty. (Don’t waste the fluid, pour it out into a glass jug, wash your bottle and pop it back in).

Slather Yourself In Pumpkin Spice
Some of you love NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice so much that you just want to slather yourself in it! Who are we to stop you?
Cue the cartoon sound of things whizzing to a rapid halt….. And IFRA!
Sadly, we are dealing with very low maximum skin safety dilution rates for NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice
How low is low?
- Deodorants 0.43%
- Body Creams, Lotions and Oils 1.96%
- Face Care 0.92%
- Hand Care 1.35%
- Soaps and Shampoo 2.74%
So, while you may wish to slather yourself, you need an air of caution with this. It definitely helps to keep an open mind when it comes to blending too, so we can support and bolster it in all sorts of lovely ways.
Sadly, the essential oils like Cinnamon and Clove that we could use to bolster it have ridiculously low skin safety dilution rates too. That’s where we have to focus on what we CAN use to stay skin safe and there is plenty!
Spices like Ginger, Nutmeg, and Cardamom all blend beautifully with NO. 65. Those orange-scented citrus oils are perfect too, but if you want to use it in the day on exposed skin, keep the dilutions of cold-pressed citrus oils to a minimum. Use orange-scented fragrance oils instead.
Choose projects that have high oil contents, oil will always help the scent linger longer on your skin, and products like Body Butter and Body Oils are perfect when you have such a low safety rate.
Tell you what… let's make a super quick and easy Body Butter!
IFRA Safety
NO. 65 in IFRA Category 5A has maximum safety restrictions of 1.96%.
This means that in 100ml of Body Butter, you can only use up to 1.96 ml of NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.
You can use the Body Cream option on the VINEVIDA Calculator to work out the correct safety data for your own formulations.
Body Butter
This makes a super easy but really delicious Body Butter. You can slather your skin in this and it will thank you! The unctuous cosmetic butters and blissful carrier oils feed and nourish your skin wonderfully.
With a high oil content, the fragrance should be long-lasting on your skin. So why not wrap yourself in its comforting embrace and cuddle up on the sofa with a blanket and a hot chocolate?
You will need:
- Kitchen scales
- Double boiler
- Handheld food mixer or whisk
- Bowl or measuring jug
- Spoons
- 8oz Glass jar with an airtight lid
Ingredients:
- 5 Oz (142g) of Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter, or Shea Butter - Choose your favorite
- 2.5 Oz (71g) of Jojoba Carrier Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis)
- Extra 0.25 Oz (7g) of extra carrier oil in case a softer texture is needed.
- 4 ml of NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice Soaps & Candles Fragrance Oil
- 4 ml of NO. 57 - Orange Sherbet Fragrance Oil
- 40 drops of Ginger Root (Dried) Essential Oil (Zingiber Officinale)
Optional - 1% preservative of choice - following manufacturers' guidelines.
Safety:
- Do not use in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy
Method:
- If you choose to use a preservative, please follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Melting the Butter
- Set your double boiler over low to medium heat and make sure the bottom of the pan is not touching the water below.
- Weigh out your cosmetic butter and place it into the warmed double boiler.
- You can help it along by giving it a stir, the shorter time it is heated, the better.
- As soon as it is melted, remove from the heat and separate your pan from the hot water.
- Add your measured-out carrier oil, give it a good mix, and then allow it to cool a little, and then pour it into a bowl.
The Cooldown
- Place the bowl in the refrigerator for up to 45 minutes or until the mix starts to turn opaque.
- The sweet spot you are looking for here is for the mixture to be relatively solid, but not so hard that you can do nothing with it.
- Take your handheld mixer and beat the oil and butter for a good few minutes.
- This is the point to carefully add your NO. 65 - Pumpkin Spice and other fragrance and essential oils.
- Continue mixing with the handheld mixer and whip your product to a wonderfully soft, pillowy, and fluffy texture.
- Does it seem a bit stiff still? Try adding another heaped tsp of oil.
- If you feel you still need more oil, simply add it one heaped tsp at a time. But please remember that as the Body Butter settles, it will continue to thicken slightly more.
Jarring Up and Good Labeling
- Scrape every last glorious morsel from the bowl, using a silicone spatula to help you, and use a jar funnel for ease to fill your jar.
- Wipe your rim meticulously, it will help to discourage the formation of mold.
- Allow the mixture to cool completely before sealing the lid. Do not do this when it is still warm as it could encourage mold growth.
- On an oil and waterproof label, clearly list all your ingredients for obvious safety reasons. Date and add an expiry date of 3-6 months.
How to use:
- Please do a 24- 48 hour patch test before first use.
- Use a spoon or a scoop to get the Body Butter out of the jar that way you don’t introduce bacteria from your fingers into the product. It will help it last longer too.
- Work the Body Butter liberally into your skin well. Wear socks if you are putting them on your feet and walking on hard floors afterward!
- Avoid intimate areas and the eyes.
