Blending Recommendations

Customers often ask, “How would you blend this”? Where do I start? There are so many ways we can blend NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint.

What beginners tend to find the most challenging is identifying ‘gaps’ in the scent profile. Hey, you have me for that! Highlighting gaps in the profile offers you space to fill them with new scents and accords.

Accords are easy to create from harmonizing oils. They can be made up of essential oils, fragrance oils, or a combination of both.

Some fragrance oils are easier than others to construct blending frameworks for. A fragrance oil might have many gaps, like this one. However, some have very few gaps. Generally, you can always find somewhere in the profile to add your own bespoke touch.

Blending NO. 30

NO. 30 is great for beginners, as it is a relatively simplistic fragrance oil and offers plenty of space to experiment and develop harmonizing accords.

It’s a very light fragrance because it does not have any resounding base notes. So we have to be cautious of this balance to not overwhelm the lightness of this fragrance oil.

Top Notes

Top Notes

The first notes are light and airy with just a touch of Citrus. These meld into the cool green tones of Cucumber and immediately bring in that cooling and soothing sensation.

So, how can we enhance it? There are many different ways you can go, but let's keep this simple and focus on just three.

Before we do so, just consider the balance of this scent profile. Do you want to maintain the light airiness and uplifting quality or are you happy to dampen it down a bit?

Go Green

The overall energy of the profile is very green. You could add to that with other green scents like Lime, Lemongrass and Basil. They all have different elements to add and would bring their own qualities.

Going green will retain that airy balance.

Go Floral

Each of these scent notes works well with Rose in the heart space. Why not enhance that floral aspect by adding a dash of Lavandin or Lavender in the top notes?

Going floral rounds, it out and gives the heart space a bit more oomph. If you do decide to take it in this direction’s recommend adding a couple of complementary base notes to change the overall balance of the scent profile.

Go Fruity

It is so light and airy, if you want to maintain this aspect consider going fruity! This keeps a fresh, uplifting scent profile that will still have those cooling notes, just warmed through a little and made more mouthwateringly delicious.

More citrus notes would be ideal, but you could also balance them with sweeter, mouthwatering fruits like Lychee, Raspberry or Strawberry.

If you go for Strawberry, try adding Basil in too. They make the most wonderful accord together.

Recap of Suggestions For Essential Oils

    • Add a green twist with Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus), Lime (Citrus Aurantifolia) or Sweet Basil ( Ocimum Basilicum L.).
    • Start a floral sensation with Lavandin (Lavandula Officinalis) or Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia).

Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

Heart Notes

Heart Notes

The heart notes are icy cool, menthol and green with Peppermint and the first flush of Eucalyptus.

If you decide to go greener in the top notes, continue that through the heart notes. Try a dash of Pine, Fir or green herbs like Bay, Hyssop and Thyme. These won’t alter the balance too much.

If you are going for Rose or Rose Geranium, add in just a tiny dash of another heady floral to round it all out. Try a couple of drops of Jasmine or Neroli, but let Rose be the starlet here. This will change the overall balance to become something softer, rounder and more feminine.

If you went fruity in the top notes and want to warm things up, then why not introduce some spice to warm things up just a little? Stick with spices that are, themselves, on the fruity side: like Cardamom, Pink and Black Pepper.

Recaps of the Suggestions for Essential Oils

    • Ramp up the femininity, introducing soft warmth with Rose, or Rose Geranium (Pelargonium Roseum).
    • Go for Pine notes with Dwarf Pine (Pinus Mugo Turra) and Scotch Pine (Pinus Sylvestris) to keep everything cool and fresh.
    • Spice things up with Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum) and Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum).

Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

Base Notes

Base Notes

The base notes are barely there with the bottom end of Eucalyptus just peeking into this space. Which means there is a LOT of room that you can play with here.

But before you do tinker, just, step back for a moment. Consider the original intention of the master perfumer. Did they purposefully design NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint to be super light and airy. Have they omitted base notes to prevent it from being anchored or grounded?

If you do want that super light essence, then maybe don’t experiment too much in the base notes.

If you are feeling adventurous …stay with me!

If you choose floral, or herbal in the top and heart notes, try a light woody choice like Amyris.

If you went for green notes, consider underpinning them with balsam, wood or resinous notes. Try Copaiba, Peru Balsam, Amyris or Frankincense.

The earthy notes of Vetiver and Patchouli will also add complimentary accords to the scent profile.

Recap of Essential Oil Recommendations

    • Go earthy and deep with Vetiver (Chrysopogon Zizanioides) and Patchouli (Pogostemon Cablin).
    • Try light woods to add a fuller aspect. Plump for Amyris (Amyris Balsamifera) or Cedarwood (Cedrus Deodara).
    • Choose balsams and resins for a different aspect to add warmth. Copaiba (Copaifera Officinalis) brings lightness, and Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata) brings golden warmth and enhances the Eucalyptus and Peppermint notes.

Suggestions for Fragrance Oils

    • NO. 1115 - Inspired by: Leaves by Bath & Body Works brings complimentary notes of Lemon, Cedarleaf, Pine, and Spiced fruit and introduces Earthy musk into the base notes. You can balance these two fragrance oils beautifully with one another. Use NO. 30 to uplift and enliven and NO. 1115 to calm, refresh and relax.

Final Blending Thoughts

There are plenty of ideas here about how to ‘construct’ your blends with the suggested harmonizing accords.

Always start by asking yourself “What is it that appeals to me most about this fragrance”?

Your answer will highlight the elements you need to preserve. Is it the light airiness? The citrus burst? The cool, green, menthol sensation? The clean aroma that evokes freshness? What do you want to keep? What needs enhancing and what needs introducing?

NO. 30, offers you an unrivaled opportunity to experiment, with plenty of space in the scent profile to play with.  Try it individually or have fun creating bespoke blends with other VINEVIDA essential and fragrance oils.

Designing and Creating Diffuser Blends With NO. 30

Follow This Blending Framework

Top Notes

    1. With citrus being a leader in the top notes you can add a little more citrus, try sticking to the green and yellow citrus like Grapefruit and Lime.
    2. Consider introducing a Rose into the heart space and supporting it in the top notes with Lavender.
    3. Stack up the invigorating green notes like Sweet Basil, Citronella and Lemongrass. They add to the overall freshness and lift it further.
    4. Add pink and scarlet fruits like Lychee, Rhubarb, Strawberry and Raspberry to add some sweetness and round out the profile.

Heart Notes

    1. The heart space is cool with Peppermint and the higher notes of Eucalyptus. Go one of three ways, floral, green or spicy.
    2. Floral - Add Rose or Rose Geranium as it perfectly marries with the Cucumber.
    3. Green - Think about adding herbs or pines like Dwarf or Scotch Pine.
    4. Spicy - If you added fruit to the top notes, pair it with some spice that has fruity tones of its own. Choose orange scented Cardamom, or Pink or Black Pepper.

Base Notes

    1. There is only the last call of Eucalyptus in the base notes which gives you this wonderful lightness. Be wary of introducing too much here, or you can easily unbalance that.
    2. Choose light woods like Amyris or go for Balsam and resin like Frankincense, rather than heavier woods.

How To Work To the Best Effect

    1. Teach yourself the benefits of patience when you start blending. Allowing yourself to work in tiny increments, like a couple of drops at a time, really helps you to avoid making mistakes. Stop to mix and test it, and you can’t go wrong! Tiny increments are the way forward.
    2. You will get the best idea of the developing scent using a scent strip to evaluate its aroma. They are cost effective and they make a noticeable difference to your evaluation when you get the fragrance out of the bowl/bottle and into the air.
    3. If you are using costly essential oils and absolutes, working in this way helps you avoid potentially costly mistakes!
    4. I  know it requires discipline and patience to work like this, but it is worth it! You have a fairly foolproof method, built upon learning from my own costly mistakes! Helping you to avoid doing the same!
    5. Take a break every 20 minutes to give your nose a rest for at least 10 minutes or you will probably go nose blind and your ability to evaluate effectively along with it!
    6. When you preserve the balance of the overall scent you improve your chances of creating successful blends.

IFRA Safety for Diffuser Blends

Diffuser Blends fall into IFRA Category 12. In this category NO. 30 fragrance oil carries no safety restrictions.

Method:

    1. Take a small measuring jug and measure out all of your fragrance oils and/or essential oils.
    2. Combine them thoroughly.
    3. Use a funnel to decant your diffuser blend into a 10ml dropper bottle.
    4. A good quality silicone spatula helps you to get every last drop of precious oil into your bottle. Get into the sustainability habit of never wasting a drop of oil, expensive or otherwise!
    5. Labeling your bottles is imperative as they contain undiluted oil and they present a safety hazard. Use a waterproof and oil-proof label to clearly list all of the ingredients. Add the date too and use within 12 months.
    6. Mark clearly as ‘UNDILUTED’ for obvious safety reasons.

How To Use Your Diffuser Blends:

    1. Always consult your individual manufacturer's instructions to get their specific guidance on your individual diffusers.
    2. You may need to dilute your blend, please follow the manufacturer's individual instructions.
    3. How To Use Vinevida Oils offers some generalized advice on using fragrance oils in differing types of diffusers.

Rose & Cucumber

Rose & Cucumber

One of my first skincare gifts was scented with Rose and Cucumber, I was about 8 and I thought it was simply divine! I still do. It’s also a very appealing aroma and, if carefully balanced, stays bright and fresh.

I’ve added floral and green notes to the top and heart notes for interest and introduced a woody base note to round out the profile beautifully.

It is ideal for use anywhere in the home, with its light, bright and fresh feminine aroma.

Beat The Heat Recipes With NO. 30

Beat the heat this week with NO. 30, capitalize on its cooling and soothing aromas and use it to cut through the summer heat and bring some welcome relief.

Fresh with light citrus notes, cool Cucumber tones and the icy cool menthol of Peppermint and finally a blast of Eucalyptus.

Eucalyptus trees are renowned for offering shade and respite in the arid parts of Australia. It is a super clean, fresh and airy scent, perfectly suited to home and topical products, but let's focus on cooling things down this week and looking after ourselves in the heat.

I’ve also designed the two products from very similar ingredients to make things a bit more cost effective and stretch your formulating skills a step further.

First, let's make a gorgeous Face Mist laced with that wonderful Rose and Cucumber accord. Use it to keep your skin hydrated and looking uber cool and stylish, as always darling!

Are you too hot and sticky to even consider slathering yourself in Body Lotion? Know the feeling. This is why I have formulated this mega hydrating Soothing Spray ‘Lotion’ instead. I use the word ‘lotion’ loosely as it is a super thin lotion that can even be sprayed on!

Trust me, you will soon be reaching for its welcome relief.

Face Mist

Face Mist

Try NO. 30 in this rather luscious Face Mist, it’s packed with hydrating ingredients to stop your skin from drying out in the heat. A quick spritz of this and you’ll be feeling like yourself again in no time!

IFRA Safety

NO. 30 in IFRA Category 5B has maximum safety restrictions of 0.48%

This means that in 100ml of product, you can use up to 0.48 ml of NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint  Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.

This is a very low safety dilution rate. We may need to consider what we can add to it, to enhance the overall formulation.

You can use the Facial Toner option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your formulations and recipes.

Hydrosols

Hydrosols like Rosewater and Orange Flower Water are bi-products of the essential oil distillation process. They are powerhouses of incredible benefits in their own right and I thoroughly encourage you to explore those benefits for yourself.

The first hydrosol I ever made was Cucumber Hydrosol and it was wonderfully soothing and cooling on the skin. I made it in a saucepan at home and so can you! Find out How to Make a Hydrosol at Home | No Special Equipment Needed.

The recipe states hydrosol, but you can use spring water or distilled water if you don’t have any hydrosol or floral water.

You Will Need:

    1. Measuring jug
    2. Stainless steel spoon or stirrer
    3. Funnel
    4. 100 ml spray bottle
    5. Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative of your choice, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Always close your eyes when spraying at the face.
    • Should you get any product in your eyes, rinse well with clean water.
    • If irritation persists, seek medical advice, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

Method:

    1. If you are using a preservative check the manufacturer's instructions on when to add it and how much. Note in the process where to add it.
    2. Mix your fragrance oil and essential oils with the Polysorbate 20 in a small measuring jug. The polysorbate is a dispersant that will help dissolve your oils into the water.
    3. Add the Witch Hazel and Glycerine and continue to combine thoroughly.
    4. Add the Rosewater and Cucumber Hydrosol (or water) and mix well.
    5. Check there is no oil floating on the top, if there is, add more Polysorbate. There should be no oil floating on the surface at all.
    6. Decant into your 100ml spray bottle and cap tightly.
    7. Clearly list all of the ingredients on an oil and waterproof label, date and use within 3 months if you have not used a preservative and up to 12 months if you have.

How to Use:

    1. Always do a 24 - 48 hour patch test.
    2. Close your eyes and spritz a little over your face, neck and decolletage to cool you down. There’s no need to rub in.
    3. Refresh as needed.

You will love how this cools you down instantly and leaves you feeling refreshed, human again, and your hydrated skin glowing with vibrancy and health!

Soothing Spray ‘Lotion’

Soothing Spray Lotion

As I said above, I use the word ‘lotion’ very loosely indeed. Essentially this is a hydrosol based product enriched with a dash of creamy lotion for extra nourishment and hydration for your skin.

It’s perfect for the days when you have overdone the sun. It helps to seal in the moisture without feeling suffocating or claggy on those super hot days and nights.

It is so light that you can use it in a spray bottle, you just need to ensure that your lotion is fully combined and does not have small amounts still undistributed through the lotion. Those small floaters will block up your spray nozzle pretty quickly.

It’s worth taking the time to make sure it is thoroughly blended. You can even stick it in the blender or use a hand blender to help you! (Use one that is no longer for food use though please).

I’ve added some essential oil magic to cool you down and soothe you beautifully. This is a game changing ‘lotion’ for those hot and sultry nights when even a sheet feels suffocating and too much!

IFRA Safety

NO. 30 in IFRA Category 5A has maximum safety restrictions of 1.3%.

This means that in 100ml of product, you can use 1.3 ml of NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint Soaps and Candles fragrance oil.

You can use the ‘Body Lotion’ option on the VINEVIDA Calculator when working out the correct safety data for your formulations and recipes.

You will need:

    1. Large bowl
    2. Small measuring jug
    3. Stainless steel stirrer
    4. Funnel
    5. 100ml Spray Bottle or a bottle with a pouring lid.
    6. Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative of your choice, follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.

    Method:

      1. Using an additional preservative? Consult the manufacturer's instructions, please.
      2. In a mixing bowl, combine your Polysorbate 20 with your carrier oil, fragrance oils and essential oils.
      3. Add your Glycerin and mix well.
      4. Add your Aqueous Cream and spend time combining this really thoroughly.
      5. In a separate jug mix your Witch Hazel and Rosewater together.
      6. Dribble this very slowly into your Aqueous Cream mix, mixing with a spoon as you go. You want to slacken it off, without it breaking down into small lumpy bits, so the idea is to keep as smooth a consistency as possible. Work slowly here.
      7. If you do get lumps, grab a whisk or chuck it in the blender. Or even sieve them out if necessary. Just be patient with it and it will repay you.
      8. Decant into a spray bottle using a funnel (or a bottle with a pouring cap).
      9. Label clearly and list all ingredients on an oil and waterproof label.

    How to use:

      1. Always carry out a 24- 48 hour patch test before using it for the first time.
      2. Spritz onto the body, you don’t need to rub it in but of course you can!
      3. If your spray nozzle blocks up, remove it immediately soak it in very hot water and flush the pump through. If that does not work try it in hot soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly before reintroducing to your ‘lotion’. You don't want to introduce any bacteria!
      4. Use within 3 months, or 6 months if you used a preservative.

Experiment with the accords and develop harmonizing aromas. Remember that creating all the diffuser blends builds on your skills, blending experience and confidence in working with fragrance oils. All while having a whole heap of fragrant fun!

Beat that summer heat and cool things down with our Face Mist and Soothing Spray ‘Lotion’. Two different products from very similar ingredients, demonstrating how you can extend your formulating skills too! Have a go, they are so simple.

We love the refreshing, enlivening and cooling notes of NO. 30 - Cucumber Mint Fragrance Oil. We hope that you will love its clean, fresh and soothing nature as much as we do!
