What We Recommend For Your Grooming Kit For Men With Essential Oils?

What We Recommend For Your Grooming Kit For Men With Essential Oils

So, let's have a look at what we recommend for your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils.

Base Ingredients

The key with any kit is to try and unify your base ingredients to prevent the cost from escalating. A Grooming Kit for men with essential oils is no exception. We can use similar ingredients but for different applications.

It pays to choose things to suit your skin type to start with, then aim to buy the highest quality ingredients your budget allows.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter can be used in numerous applications from moisturizers, to nourishing or protective creams and pomades.

Beautifully rich and full of active ingredients, shea is a treat for your skin. Locking in hydration and moisturizing the skin to keep it soft, supple, and smooth, Shea Butter is full of antioxidants associated with reducing the signs of aging.

Shea butter is perfect for Aftershave Lotions and Balms as it soothes irritated skin.

Aqueous Cream

Using aqueous cream means you don’t have to make a water-based lotion from scratch.  It gives you a starting point to add to. It is inexpensive and easy to source. It is suitable for sensitive skin too and is widely used as an emollient to soften and cleanse skin conditions.

It is easy to thin down with water or hydrosols or can be thickened by adding waxes or cosmetic butter if you prefer. It is an extremely versatile starting point that packs a moisturizing punch to boot.

There are organic ones available too but they are harder to find and more costly.

Beeswax

Never underestimate what a honeybee can do for you, or your skin!

Beeswax is wonderful for soothing itchiness and irritation and encouraging skin cell renewal and regeneration. It is deeply nourishing for your skin and one ingredient that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Beeswax with its natural antimicrobial and healing properties is perfect for when you cut yourself shaving. Fratini (2016) writes

‘The few studies showed an antimicrobic effectiveness of beeswax against overall Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger; these inhibitory effects are enhanced synergistically with other natural products such as honey’.

Beeswax is a very useful ingredient to protect against potential pathogens. Add it to your for aftershave balms lotions and salves.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils are an intrinsic part of your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils.

You don’t always have to go out and buy cosmetic carrier oils, you might have just what you need in your kitchen cupboards. Look for Grape seed oil, Olive oil, and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (this one will be solid and in a jar) in your kitchen.

However, it is worth investing in the good stuff, like Argan and Rosehip carrier oils.

Argan Carrier Oil

Argan has an extremely high (80%) composition of essential fatty acids (omega 6 & 9). It is a superlative skin ‘food’. Packed with potent antioxidants, it softens the skin beautifully, potentially even better than Shea butter can.

It nourishes and hydrates the skin, which helps to increase skin flexibility and plumpness and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Rosehip Carrier Oil

I just love Rosehip carrier oil’s ability to soothe, feed, and nourish the skin. It is one of my favorite carrier oils.

High in Linoleic acid (Vitamin F) it helps to moisturize and plump the complexion. This strengthens and protects the skin's barrier, softening and smoothing its surface.

Often, Alpha linoleic acid is added to treatments to protect the skin from premature aging and environmental damage. So this makes rosehip oil perfect in skin protection preparations.

Don’t go mad though, it is a potent little thing, and only use it as about 5% of your total volume, you don’t need any more than that.

It will be well worth reading Liz’s brilliant article - 11 Best Carrier Oils For Beard: Maximum Growth And Thickness if you need to know what carrier oils to use to look after your precious facial hair with Beard Oil.

Essential Oils

Your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils, will of course need those very things, essential oils!

When it comes to choosing essential oils, you should always ask yourself, “What do I want them to do”?

    • Are you looking to soothe irritated skin?
    • Uplift your mood?
    • Calm anxieties or destress yourself?
    • Improve your sleep routine?
    • Or do I just want them to make me smell nice?

Whatever your needs, we have the perfect essential oil for you.

Now, gentlemen, don’t shy away from using florals, they are profoundly useful in so many ways. It will pay for you to simply learn to balance them with citrus, spicy, and woody notes to elongate and round scent profiles beautifully. Often, when you are trying to create a great masculine scent profile, you need a floral in there for some uplift and for it to seem more naturalistic in some way.

Calming and Soothing

Essential oils Like Lavender and Roman Chamomile soothe not only your irritated skin but also your mood. If you are making products for use at night, they will also help to improve your sleep.

Patchouli and Geranium are also wonderful choices for skin soothing and softening, again they will also help to relax you, relieve tension, and instill a serene sense of calm to your equilibrium.

Enlivening and Uplifting

If you prefer products for use in the morning to get your day off to a great start, consider Citrus essential oils like Sweet Orange and Mandarin. Take care with Citrus Oils though as they can be phytotoxic. You don’t really want to expose your skin to sun (or sunbeds) for 12 hours after use.

If you prefer something a little greener and more herbaceous, plump for essential oils like Peppermint, Eucalyptus, or Thyme, to wake things up a bit. Spearmint is a wonderful choice.

Mending The Skin

My husband is not the best at looking after his skin, despite all the lovely potions and lotions I might make him. Often he comes back to work with so many nicks and cuts on his hands after a hard day of engineering.

This is where super nourishing carrier oils, like Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, and Beeswax can be combined with essential oils that are globally renowned for healing the skin and assisting in wound care. Calendula is used widely for skin healing in herbalism and is even more potent as an Absolute.

Myrrh is nicknamed Skin Knit, for its ability to literally aid in knitting the skin back together and  Helichrysum is the perfect choice for that stubborn wound that just won't heal. Especially those on the legs that seem to take forever to heal as we get older.

Improve Sleep

It is possible to dose your skin care in your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils to help you sleep better. We have already talked about how Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Patchouli

are great for soothing you and your skin, but they are great for improving the quality of your sleep too.

Add Marjoram to soothe frazzled nerves and Vetiver for deeply sedative actions and you will be knocking out the Zzzz’s in no time at all.

This is where you can capitalize on an essential oil’s, many and varied, actions to have dual properties in your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils.

Fragrance Oils

Now, you might just say, “I only want to smell nice”, and this is where fragrance oils might suit you better. But remember, that they don’t have any of the positive actions and benefits that essential oils do.

We have chosen three really gorgeous masculine fragrance oils to compliment your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils.

They have wonderful lingering base notes that can really compliment lighter, more ethereal essential oil notes like Orange and grapefruit and lighter florals, like Lavender. This also means they will linger on the skin longer too, making your overall scent profile last longer.

While you can certainly use them on their own, I have chosen them more specifically to beautifully compliment the essential oils, in the recipes given below.

Mahogany Teakwood

Recipes For Your Grooming Kit For Men With Essential Oils?

Recipes For Your Grooming Kit For Men With Essential Oils

We have some great recipes for your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils. Some are easier than others, but once you have had a go, you will find it hard to go back to store-bought products!

Prep your skin with our Face Scrub and slough off all that dead skin. Add hydration and soothe and soften your skin with our light Aftershave Balm Lotion. If you are working outside, in the cold, or in particularly dirty environments, Face Protection Cream can be your Salvation, adding a super thin, but protective, extra layer over your skin.

Don’t neglect your luscious lock and facial hair with our beautifully fragrant Beard Oil and Hair Pomade, simply perfect preening products.

Right! Let’s get to the exciting bit!

Face Scrub

Face Scrub

A staple for your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils is our indispensable Face Scrub. An effective, but gentle cleaner for your skin. It is ideal if you work in dusty, greasy, or dirty environments and need something with a bit more oomph to clean your skin.

It will slough off the dead (and dirty) skin cells, exposing the new softer, and healthier-looking, skin underneath.

It’s super easy to make and you will have most of the ingredients in your kitchen already.

Now, this recipe calls for Salt, don’t use Table Salt as it has additives, but Kosher Salt, Sea Salt, and Pink Himalayan Salt are perfect. Try and get the fine ground version or grind your own in a coffee grinder.

It also calls for Sugar, you can use white granulated, soft brown, or light brown sugar. Stay away from Demerara as its crystals are too big and harsh for your skin.

If you only have Olive oil, Sunflower Oil, Grapeseed Oil, or Avocado oil in your kitchen and you don’t want to buy extra carrier oil. Don’t! It is fine to use those, but don’t use any more than 40% Avocado oil in your overall preparation.

You Will Need:

    • A mixing bowl
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Jar funnel
    • Preserving a jar with a rubber seal or a jar with an airtight lid
    • Oil-proof label
    • Wooden spoon or scoop to keep with the jar

Ingredients:

Optional:

Preservative of your choice - follow your manufacturer's guidelines on what to add and how much. (Though Salt is a natural preservative, especially at this ratio)

Safety:

I know, men don’t get pregnant, but we do need to add the warning not to use this in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, just in case your girlfriend or wife takes a fancy to it as well!

Method:

    1. Measure out your Salt and Sugar into a bowl, you don’t have to be exact here, you have some leeway.
    2. Measure out at least 1 ½ cups of your carrier oil add your essential oil and stir well.
    3. Add your oil mix to the Salt and Sugar and stir well.
    4. Depending on what oil you are using, you might need a little more. Don’t use any more than 2 cups though.
    5. Using a jar funnel, decant in your preserving jar and clean the rim meticulously to discourage the formation of mold, and lid tightly.
    6. Label and date with an oil-proof label, listing all ingredients for safety reasons. Now guys, don’t be tempted to skip this because when your 3-year-old kid ingests it and you are in the Emergency Room, are you really going to remember what essential oils you used? Trust me, label it!
    7. Use it within six months.

How To Use:

    1. Patch test for 24-48 hours before use.
    2. Don’t use this any more than about 1-2 times a week.
    3. Use a small wooden spoon or scoop to take some out of the jar, this stops you from introducing bacteria from your fingers into the jar.
    4. Work into your skin in small circular upward motions, avoiding the delicate eye area.
    5. Rinse off with clean warm water, add a little soap if you wish, or work any excess oil well into the skin by massaging it. This encourages improved circulation which helps in cell regeneration and the appearance of healthier skin.
    6. Keep out of reach of children in a cool, dark place.

Aftershave Balm Lotion

Aftershave Balm Lotion

Now, after you have scrubbed your skin beautifully clean and soft, you need a product in your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils that will soothe, smooth and hydrate your skin. This is where this beautifully light Aftershave Balm Lotion comes in.

I will show you how to tinker with this recipe to suit your needs. Make it a nice and light lotion to always use under your Face Protection Cream or leave it thicker and more like Moisturizer to use just on its own.

Optional:

Preservative of your choice - follow your manufacturer's guidelines on what to add and how much.

Safety:

I know, men don’t get pregnant, but we do need to add the warning not to use this in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, just in case your girlfriend or wife takes a fancy to it as well!

Method:

    1. If you are using a preservative, consult your manufacturer's instructions on how much to add and when.
    2. Combine your Aqueous Cream and Rosewater in a mixing bowl.
    3. Add in the Glycerine and Witch Hazel and stir well.
    4. Measure out the Rosehip carrier oil add in the essential oils and mix thoroughly.
    5. Pour into the cream base and mix until everything is amalgamated and combined.
    6. Use a bottle or jar funnel and decant into your preferred container.
    7. Clean the rim meticulously to discourage the formation of mold, and cap tightly.
    8. Label listing all ingredients for safety reasons and date the bottle.

How To Use:

    1. Before using for the first time, do a 24-48 hour patch test.
    2. While called an Aftershave Balm, you can use this at any time of the day or night to hydrate your skin.
    3. Simply apply to the skin with your fingertips, using circular upward motions.
    4. Take care of the delicate eye area.
    5. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 6 months.

Face Protection Cream

Face Protection Cream

This is a product to add to your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils if you work outside or in dusty, dirty, or oily environments. You can use it as both a preventative cream and for when your skin might need some TLC, like after exposure to inclement weather.

It is the wax content of this cream that makes it an excellent skin barrier. In the past, I have used it for bodyboarding and applied it over my sunscreen. Anyone who spends much time by the sea knows just how much the salt, the sun, and the wind can ravage your fragile skin. This is an efficient and effective way of protecting your precious skin.

The wax base offers your skin an extra layer of protection and helps stop those tiny particles of dirt, dust, or oil, from getting into your pores and causing breakouts or spots. It will also offer some protection against windburn for those who are outside working on cold, wet, and windy days.

You Will Need:

    • Food processor/ Blender or Stand/Hand mixer
    • Double boiler
    • Stainless steel spoon/stirrer
    • Measuring jugs and spoons
    • Glass Jars and lids (You need to be able to sterilize the jars preferably)
    • Labels

Ingredients:

Optional:

Preservative of your choice - follow your manufacturer's guidelines on what to add and how much.

Safety:

I know, men don’t get pregnant, but we do need to add the warning not to use this in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, just in case your girlfriend or wife takes a fancy to it as well!

Method:

Gentle Heating
    1. If you are using a preservative consult your manufacturer's instructions on how much to add and when in the process it should be added.
    2. Set your jars to sterilize and make sure they are ready and hot for you to fill.
    3. Over low to medium heat, set a double boiler warming through.
    4. Add the Emulsifying Wax and Shea butter and allow them to gently and slowly melt in their own time. Don't be tempted to whack the heat up, take your time with it. The last thing you want to do is to burn your wax and butter.
    5. While the wax melts, very gently heat the Rosewater in a saucepan to just below boiling point - Have a little extra on hand, in case you need to add more. If you do happen to need it, it will be hot and ready to go.
    6. As soon as your wax and butter have melted, carefully add in your carrier oils. You need to warm these through very gently too. High heat can degrade your wax, butter, and oils, so keep that heat as low as you can.
Mixing Well
    1. Once everything in the double boiler is warmed through, pour it all either into a food processor, or a large mixing bowl if you are using a handheld mixer.
    2. Then pour in the very hot Rosewater, and set it to mix.
    3. Now you need to strike a balance here. You want it to be well combined and thoroughly mixed, but not so much that it is so full of air. Because all that happens then is that it will sink back into the jars as it sets.
    4. As soon as you feel it is well mixed, add in your essential oils and mix again, quickly but thoroughly.
Jarring Up and Labeling
    1. Pour the completed mixture into a measuring jug and then pour the Face Protection Cream into sterilized jars.
    2. Cover with a clean cotton cloth and allow to cool fully. Please do NOT add the lids until the Face Protection Cream is set and the jars are fully cold. If you choose to ignore this, any residual heat could cause molding, which would be a waste. This can also happen even if you use a preservative, so be patient and let it cool.
    3. Once cooled, lid and label clearly with all the ingredients and the date of manufacture.

How To Use:

    1. Do a 24-48 hour patch test before using for the first time.
    2. You only need a really small amount. A little goes a long way with this cream.
    3. Just like using the Aftershave Balm, work in upward circular motions, taking care around the delicate eye area.
    4. If you are working outside or going to be exposed to weather, apply it to the tops of your ears and even the front and back of your neck if it is exposed. If you're balding, then look after your skin and cover that too.
    5. It is worth remembering to give your skin a quick clean when you return home. It helps to remove any impurities that you have picked up throughout the day. Then give it another liberal layer, especially if you have been exposed to wet/snowy, cold, and windy weather.
    6. Don’t forget to use it on those sunny days too, don’t get caught out. This can be especially useful if you're in, or on, the sea, surfing, sailing, or swimming.
    7. Store in a cool dry place and use within six months.

Beard Oil

Beard Oil

When making a Grooming Kit for men with essential oils, don’t neglect your precious facial hair. Beards are very much in vogue again so it is no surprise to see the rise of Beard Oil and other male grooming products.

If you are unfamiliar with Beard Oil, it is usually made up mostly of rich and nourishing carrier oils, like Jojoba, Castor, Argan, and Coconut, that feed and condition your facial hair. Then it is laced with essential oils that are full of positive actions and benefits.

Fragrance oils are sometimes also used. We will use both in this recipe, but feel free to use one or the other. Remember the essential oils bring all those lovely actions to the party too, they are so much more than just ‘smelling nice’.

Our Version Of Tobacco Vanille By Tom Ford Fragrance Oil in IFRA Category 5B has a maximum safety dilution rate of 1.07%.

    • Small measuring jug
    • Funnel
    • 20ml Rubber topped dropper bottles
    • Oil-proof label

    2. Add your Our Version Of Tobacco Vanille By Tom Ford Fragrance Oil and the essential oils and combine well.

    4. Using an oil-proof label, label clearly, listing all of the ingredients for safety reasons.

How To Use:

    1. Now, please do not skip doing a 24-48 hour patch test guys. As macho as you are, hives are not a good look on anyone.
    2. Simply, using the dropper, dispense a few drops into the palm of your hand and warm slightly.
    3. Work the oil through your facial hair.
    4. Massaging it firmly, but gently, try to coat as much of the hair as possible from root to tip. (Just be wary of going overboard, you don’t want to end up with an oil slick stuck to your face).
    5. It is advisable to use a paper towel to remove any excess.
    6. If you use this product last thing at night, it could stain your bed linen, so it is probably best used in the morning.

Hair Pomade

Hair Pomade

Turn this Grooming Kit for men with essential oils into the perfect gift for the hipsters or grizzly bears in your life.

If you have never come across a Pomade before, it is simply a perfumed product for your hair, however, we have taken this a step further with the rich and nourishing Carrier Oils and Shea Butter, that will help tame flyaways and give you some styling ability.

Those men in your life who love to preen and smell nice will simply adore this.

This recipe will make 3 or 4 little tins or a couple of jars.

Hair Pomade is found in IFRA Category No 7B and Genuine Leather Fragrance Oil has a maximum safety dilution rate of 1.45%.

You Will Need:

    • Double boiler
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Measuring jug
    • Balm or Salve Tins or Jars
    • Labels

Ingredients:

Safety:

I know, men don’t get pregnant, but we do need to add the warning not to use this in the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, just in case your girlfriend or wife takes a fancy to it as well!

Method:

    1. Over low to medium heat, set a double boiler, with water in the bottom pan, make sure the water does not touch the top pan.
    2. Measure out the ingredients carefully and combine them in the double boiler.
    3. Stir occasionally to help it all melt together.
    4. Remove from the heat immediately as soon as it is melted.
    5. Stir in your Essential Oil or Fragrance Oil and mix well.
    6. You may wish to transfer it to a jug at this point to make pouring easier.
    7. Carefully, pour into your jars or tins. Then cover the open tins/jars with a clean tea towel and allow the Pomade set fully.
    8. Please let the Pomade cool completely before moving the jars or putting the lids on. If you try doing it while it is hot, it can encourage mold and you risk scalding yourself!
    9. Once it is completely cool, add the lids.
    10. Label, listing all of your ingredients clearly, for safety reasons.
    11. As people are less used to using this product it could be worth adding some instructions too.

The Final Word

The Final Word

I hope that you have enjoyed exploring how to make your own Grooming Kit for men with essential oils. If you are one of those gentlemen pushing this new movement for more natural and organic skincare products, then good on you. Think about making some of these products for your mates and ask them to voice their opinions to the movement too.

Need To Build Some Confidence To Get Started?

Need To Build Some Confidence To Get Started?

If you are not sure where to start in your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils, start with the Face Scrub, it is so simple and gives you great results right away.

Then try the Beard Oil if you have a beard or facial hair, super simple to combine and use. You won’t go back to commercial offerings once you get the hang of creating your own with essential oils and being able to create a scent that YOU really want.

Then try making the Aftershave Balm and introduce your skin to that wonderful hit of hydration and let it suck up all the glorious goodness. That big hit of hydration smoothes your skin, plumps it out, and makes it appear more healthy and less lined or wrinkled.

I cannot recommend the Face Protection Cream highly enough for those of you working outside or in dirty, oily, or dusty conditions. Creating that extra waxy layer is salvation for your skin. I’ve made it for miners, engineers, and even divers. Give it a go!

If you are getting the double boiler out for the Face Protection Cream, you might as well make a batch of Hair Pomade too while you are at it.

I have purposely designed these recipes to use similar ingredients to keep the initial outlay as low as possible.

What Do I Want?

Remember to consider what you want your products in your Grooming Kit for men with essential oils to do!

Do you want a morning jolt? Use more Citrus essential oils and those lively green herbaceous

essential oils like Eucalyptus and Spearmint.

Are you after a soothing night's sleep? Use Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Patchouli, and Vetiver to calm and relax you to get you wind down into sleep mode.

Maybe, you need essential oils that are going to bring their qualities to your sore and irritated skin. Lavender, Roman Chamomile, and Patchouli are the perfect oils to draw upon.

Don’t be afraid to tinker a little with the recipes to suit you, especially in terms of changing the essential oils to your preferences. Just make sure you are within the recommended IFRA safety dilution rates. (Don’t panic - I show you how to work that out in this article - How To Use Vinevida Oils)

Just have a go! Because as soon as you start making your own Grooming Kit for men with essential oils, you won’t go back.
