What Is Body Spray With Essential Oils and Fragrance Oil?

If you stand in the store these days, you are literally bombarded by choice in this particular aisle and you’d be forgiven for getting confused about what does what!

Generally, commercial Body Sprays have no deodorizing effects and they are simply a fragrancing product. A product labeled as Body Mist is simply Body Spray as well.

However, there are a variety of different Body Spray recipes online. Some are purely fragranced Body Sprays like the commercial ones and others do actually have deodorizing effects.

When it comes to making your own diy Body Spray with essential oils, most of you seem to want it to have some sort of deodorant effect as well. We will cover that for you in this article.

It is entirely possible to make your own wholly natural body spray and we show you how.

But why should you…..?

Why Make Your Own Body Spray With Essential Oils and Fragrance Oil?

Commercial Body Sprays are full of potential toxins and chemicals and if you want to cut down on your exposure to these, read How To Make Essential Oil Body Spray. It’s a great place to start and it gives you plenty of reasons why you should make your own Body Spray with essential oils.

When we look at factoring in the use of fragrance oils you can be assured that none of our fragrance oils contain Parabens, Phthalates, SLS, and SLES because VINEVIDA takes your skincare seriously too. VINEVIDA fragrance oils are never tested on animals either.

If you want some extra pointers or persuasion, I talk through all the benefits of why you should make your own products in The Allure Of Crafting Your Own Natural Products

Our Favorite Essential Oils For Making Body Spray

My first question is, “What do you want your Body Spray to do”? When using essential oils, it makes sense to capitalize on all of their active benefits and properties.

Is it to combat sweat and odor and to act like a deodorant? Or do you just want to use your favorite essential oil blend to smell nice?

There are many essential oils to choose from, let's have a look at some!

Antimicrobial and Antibacterial Essential Oils For Body Spray

To make a Body Spray with a deodorant-like effect, it only takes a few drops of essential oil. You can make it much more effective by pairing them with other active ingredients like Witch Hazel and Magnesium Flakes.

Choose essential oils that have antimicrobial and antibacterial chemical constituents and properties. These reduce the presence of bacteria, which multiply and cause odor.

Choose herbal notes with Tea Tree, which is an absolute powerhouse of active constituents and properties. Plump for cool and fresh with Peppermint and Thyme. Rosemary is packed with odor-fighting properties, but do be cautious with this one and check the contraindications first.

Perhaps, you prefer something citrus-scented? Go for the bright zesty zing of Grapefruit, and Bergamot. Add in deliciously fresh green notes with Lemongrass.

If you prefer something more floral choose essential oils like Lavender, Geranium, and Rose Geranium.

Add wonderful earthy notes of Patchouli to anchor those citrus and herbal notes. When you have a good base note to round out the whole scent profile, it helps the fragrance of your Body Spray last longer on your skin

Essential Oils For A Feminine Body Spray

If you want to create a feminine Body Spray with essential oils just for the fragrance, there are plenty of amazing essential oils to choose from.

You can’t beat the heady presence of Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, and Neroli. Lighten things up a little with Rose Geranium, the rosy notes of Palmarosa, or the more herbal notes of Lavender and Chamomile.

Essential Oils For A Masculine Body Spray

To create a Body Spray with essential oils which has more masculine aspects, choose beautiful rich woody essential oils like Amyris, Cedarwood, and Copaiba.

Resinous notes like Frankincense and Myrrh work well in Body Sprays, combined with spices like Cardamom, Coriander, and Nutmeg.

What Ingredients Do I Need to Make Body Spray With Essential Oils and Fragrance Oil?

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is useful in Body Sprays where you want a deodorizing effect. It is an astringent and will help to constrict the pores, which reduces the chances of sweating. When used alongside Magnesium Flakes, they become a powerhouse couple against sweat.

Magnesium Flakes

Like Witch Hazel, they will help to constrict the pores to stop you sweating. It also helps to counteract any bacteria on the skin responsible for causing that odor we all call BO.

Please see an extra note on using Magnesium Flakes in the recipe section.

Vegetable Glycerin

As a humectant, Glycerine attracts water from the air. You don’t want to use too much, since the objective is to keep things dry so just be mindful not to use too much.  It will help to lock in moisture to the skin though.

It is preferable to use Vegetable Glycerin in your Body Spray with essential oils. If you don’t have the vegetable version, just use what you have. However, if you plan to sell your Body Spray with essential oils and fragrance oils use the vegetable version to suit all customers.

Distilled Water

Use Distilled or Purified Water rather than straight tap water, please. It helps to avoid any unnecessary nasties in your Body Spray with essential oils.

If you only have access to pure spring or well water, filter and boil it first, please.

Dispersant

This is where most people stumble when making Body Spray with essential oils and fragrance oils. They pile in the water and the oils and maybe a dash of alcohol and wonder why all the oils are still sitting on top. You need a dispersant.

Think of when you use dish soap in the washing-up bowl and all the oil on the surface just ‘disappears’. It doesn’t disappear, it is broken down into smaller molecules and these bind onto the water cells, meaning oil stays in the water and off your clean washing up! This is the action you want it to do in your Body Spray.

There are commercial options like Polysorbate 20 and 80 that are widely used for this purpose. You can also use a few drops of Castile soap, you will need a bit more soap than you have oil. Gauge what you need, the last thing you want is a soapy and bubbly Body Spray.

For instance, If you are going to use 15 ml of fragrance oil, choose Polysorbate as your dispersant. If you are using 40 drops / 2 ml of essential oil, you will get away with using Castile soap instead.

Preservative

This is the next stumbling block that many of you fall into. You make an incredible Body Spray and wonder why a week later it smells funny. Well…. It went off!

When you use a large proportion of water in a product you need a preservative to extend its shelf life. You can get some wonderful organic and vegan options these days too.

Always follow individual manufacturer's guidelines, as they all differ.

Perfumers Alcohol

We looked at using Perfumer's Alcohol in the section above. With the blend of Denatured Ethanol, Isopropyl Myristate, and Mono Propylene Glycol it will give you a better product versus a high-strength Vodka.  It has a better ability to dissolve, distribute, and dissipate the oils you choose to use.

It is also comparable in price to a high-strength Vodka at around $30-35 a liter. Shop about, as it is much cheaper here in the UK (£9.99/$12.49).

Answering Your Questions On How To Make Body Spray With Essential Oils

We have had so many questions and requests from customers about how to make Body Sprays and we have heard you!

How To Make Body Spray With Essential Oils

Hopefully, we can answer a few of your queries and answer your questions throughout the tutorial, but let's just tackle some head-on.

‘How To Make Body Spray With Perfume’

The answer is do not.

Perfumes are usually made from an alcohol base which is diluted with water.

Adding more water simply dilutes the intensity of the original fragrance, which means that not only will you have disappointing results but it will also be an expensive mistake.

This is where a fragrance oil dupe of your favorite perfume comes into its own. It will have the strength and intensity to survive being heavily diluted because they are designed specifically for that.

Don’t waste your money making Body Spray with perfume, it is not worth it.

‘How to Make Essential Oil Body Spray Without Alcohol’

We all know that oil and water do not mix, so you need some form of dispersant. Often, we use alcohol because it helps to dissolve and bind some oils into the overall solution. Without it your oils will simply float on top of your water and you will get small globs of concentrated oil sitting directly on your skin, which is the last thing you want.

So how do you avoid this happening? Witch Hazel to some extent will help to disperse some of the oil. However, if you add a commercial dispersant like Polysorbate 20 or 80 or Castile Soap, that can help matters enormously.

If you are using Magnesium Flakes, they will become very viscous on dilution. This can also help trap essential and fragrance oils molecules and keep them suspended in the solution.  You can make a very effective deodorant with just Witch Hazel, Magnesium Flakes, and essential oils.

‘How to Make Body Spray With Alcohol’

This is a common question alongside, “Do you have an essential oil body spray recipe with vodka”?

If you are going to use Vodka, use a very high-proof one. 40%vol is not going to cut the mustard, unfortunately. You need 50+%vol which ups the price significantly. You are better off buying Perfumer's Alcohol at around $30-35 a liter.

Perfumers Alcohol contains Denatured Ethanol which helps oils dissolve, blend, and disperse evenly.  It inhibits microbes, and bacteria and preserves its shelf life. Isopropyl Myristate helps to bind and dilute the oils. It also acts as a moisturizer and skin emollient. Mono Propylene Glycol slows the alcohol evaporation, meaning that the fragrance of your Body Spray dissipates slower and lasts longer.

If you weigh up how much better Perfumers Alcohols dissolves, distributes, and dissipates the oils vs simply dissolving oils with high-proof Vodka, it’s a no-brainer.

‘How to Make Body Spray with Water’

We have had a lot of questions about this! Many Body Spray recipes contain water as the diluter and the carrier to make it safe for use on your skin and to make it more affordable.

The most common problems people experience are:

    • Oils float on the surface because a dispersant has not been used.
    • The Body Spray goes rancid and starts to smell funny or even go green. This happens because no preservative has been added.

Recipes For Body Spray With Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils

I wanted to create a range of quick and easy recipes, some with alcohol and some without, to cover as many bases as possible for you. Try one, try them all!

These body sprays with essential oil and fragrance oils are better stored in dark amber glass spray bottles, but I appreciate not all of you might want glass in your bathroom. In that case, just use a good quality plastic spray bottle, designed to be used with hydro alcoholic products.

A Note On Using Magnesium

It is very common to find that people are low in Magnesium these days and would be classed as deficient.  For those of you experiencing low levels of Magnesium, it is not unusual to experience a mild tingling or stinging sensation when using Magnesium for the first couple of weeks.

I had it happen to me and I promise it wasn't awful, just slightly disconcerting at first because I wasn’t expecting it. Hence, why I am preparing you!

Expect it to sting a little at first while your Magnesium levels acclimate. Keep using it, your skin will get used to it and it will sting less as magnesium levels rise. Do be sensible and gauge it; if your skin breaks out and is genuinely red raw, then stop using it. But if it is just stinging, please persist.

If you struggle to use Magnesium because your levels are in your boots, try this instead: Combine baking soda, cornstarch, and water to create a paste to absorb moisture. By adding antibacterial essential oils to this paste, you will improve its efficacy.
