About Neroli Essential Oil

Neroli essential oil (Citrus Aurantium) is extracted from the blossom of the bitter orange tree. The orange blossom is usually harvested twice a year, in May and then again in October if the weather stays mild.

VINEVIDA’s Neroli essential oil is steam-distilled in Morocco.  Orange Flower Water or hydrosol is also created as a byproduct of the process, however, it is also often made as the primary product. The hydrosol (or hydrolat) is just as sublime as the essential oil itself and I will be using it alongside the essential oil in these recipes.

Neroli essential oil has a bright but soft, sweetly romantic, floral aroma. If used in large amounts it can be quite heady and intoxicating. It’s glorious and I love using it in my own skincare recipes for its incredible qualities and that delicious aroma.

The Benefits of Neroli Essential Oil Face Care

Neroli essential oil face care has a wonderful reputation and it’s easy to see how it earned its accolades over the years.  Neroli’s chemical constituents and active properties are useful for addressing thread veins and toning the overall complexion.

Neroli essential oil is suitable for all skin types, but it is particularly effective on more mature skin. Neroli has chemical constituents like Βeta-Pinene and Limonene with anti-inflammatory properties. As they reduce inflammation they even the skin’s appearance. Limonene is an antioxidant that targets free radicals. These actions are the core of anti-aging products.

Using Neroli essential oil face care regularly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, maintains skin elasticity, and improves overall skin tone. Despite its powerful actions it’s gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin.

Neroli essential oil is suitable for all skin types, but it is particularly effective on more mature skin.

I find it very useful to promote skin healing for scars or stretch marks. Combine it with Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum grandiflorum) for extra oomph and lusciousness!

Doubling Up On Neroli Essential Oil

Double up on Neroli’s essential oils benefits. In addition to its skincare abilities, it has proven abilities for pain relief and anxiety. Kill two birds with one stone by introducing Neroli into your regular skincare routine.

Anxiety, Stress and Depression

Anxiety, Stress and Depression

Neroli essential oil has a chemical constituent called Linalool, which possesses wonderfully calming and sedative properties that help you relax, unwind, and let go of your worries. Linalool is excellent for stress, anxiety, and depression.

It is a very useful essential oil to use when emotions are the seat or core of the issue. Such as work-related anxiety, a broken relationship, or even grief.

Pain

Linalool also demonstrates potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, making it a useful choice when experiencing premenstrual tension and pain-related stress.

Neroli essential oil’s combined constituents are so effective that 2022 by Scandurra showed the abilities of Neroli essential oil in women experiencing labor to reduce and relieve pain and anxiety. Use it to help you manage the stress associated with being in pain, especially for those of you who experience chronic pain.

Aphrodisiac

Would you believe that Neroli essential oil face care can double us as an aphrodisiac?

Harness those active constituents to raise the heat the little and get things going. So... don’t be surprised if your sex life suddenly starts to improve as well as your skin!

Remember what I just said about Neroli being useful when you are experiencing emotional anxiety and pain? If these are getting in the way of enjoying the more intimate side of life, capitalize on this and make it work for you. If you combine it with Vanilla Oleoresin it can improve feelings of safety and comfort as well.

Recipes for Neroli Essential Oil Face Care

Recipes for Neroli Essential Oil Face Care

This is the one place where I ask you to ditch synthetic fragrances and fragrance oils and use the pure essential oils. You want to harness all of those wonderful active properties and chemical constituents that you just won’t get in a fragrance oil.

Don’t use mineral oils please, use natural oils like Argan and Rosehip as carriers. Opt for cold-pressed seed and nut oils, if you can afford them. If you are allergic to nuts, don’t use nut oils!

There are recipes to suit every budget here. If you can’t stretch to three or four carrier oils, buy one really good one and use that instead. However, appreciate that you may experience different outcomes and effects by doing so.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Cleanser

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Cleanser

Every good face routine starts with a great cleanser and this is a good old-fashioned Cold Cream. Inspired by Stephanie Tourle's recipe. Touted by 1940s movie stars to remove the heaviest of stage makeup, apparently, they would use it to soothe their hot and tired feet after being stuck in heels all day too.

This is very different to the kind of cleanser you buy in the store these days. It is thick, unctuous, and super nourishing for your skin. The oils are going to lift out all the muck and yuck from your pores. You must use an astringent Toner after use to remove all traces of the oil.

I acknowledge that vegans prefer to use Vegetable Shortening. Homesteaders may prefer to use tallow or lard, however, they must be perfectly pure and finely filtered, please.

You Will Need:

    • Double boiler
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Jar funnel
    • 100ml dark amber glass jar and lid
    • Oil proof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative - follow the manufacturer's individual guidance on how much to add and when.

Method:

    1. Set the double boiler over low heat and gently melt the Vegetable Shortening, Tallow, or Lard.
    2. As soon as it is molten, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
    3. Once it has cooled slightly, but is still liquid, stir in the carrier oils and combine fully.
    4. Finally, add the essential oils and mix again to make sure they are evenly distributed.
    5. Decant into a dark glass jar using a jar funnel for ease.
    6. Cover with a soft cotton cloth and allow to cool fully before adding the lid, This helps to prevent the formation of moisture that may encourage mold growth.
    7. Label clearly with an oil-proof label. List all ingredients for safety reasons.

How To Use:

    1. Do a 24- 48 patch test before use.
    2. Apply liberally to the face, work into areas of heavy makeup, and remove with a soft pad or cloth.
    3. Follow with an astringent Toner.
    4. Use within 3- 6 months
    5. It’s great for areas of dry skin too, apply lightly every other day and leave on the skin.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy
    • Grapefruit Specific -Not suitable for use for people who have platelet disorders or are on blood thinning medication. It is suggested you cease the use of grapefruit essential oil 48 hours before any planned surgery.
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled jar with you.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Toner

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Toner

Toning your face is an important part of the process. It helps to remove dirt dislodged by cleansing and removes dead skin cells.

It’s popular to use Neroli oil for skin tightening and to even out skin tone. That’s just what we are going to capitalize upon here!

Orange Flower Water has a gentle effect, which is useful on sensitive or allergy-prone skin. It helps your skin to look and feel more luminous.

Witch Hazel is a wonderful astringent and cleans out pores before constricting and closing them.

Glycerine helps grab any last bits of dirt, debris, or dead skin cells and pulls them away from your face. It’s also a humectant agent, so it attracts moisture from the air, locking it into your skin.

You Will Need:

    • Measuring jug
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Funnel
    • 100ml bottle and lid
    • Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative - follow the manufacturer's individual guidance on how much to add and when.

Method:

    1. Combine all of the ingredients in a measuring jug and mix well.
    2. Use a funnel and decant into a suitable bottle.
    3. Using an oil and waterproof label, list all ingredients for safety reasons.

How To Use:

    1. Do a 24- 48 patch test before using it for the first time.
    2. Apply to a soft, clean pad or cleansing cloth and work over the face in upward circular motions.
    3. Check the pad or cloth regularly. If it seems to be lifting a lot of debris away, use more Toner on a new pad or a new area of your cleansing cloth. Keep going until your pads or cloth cannot pick up any more skin debris and come away clean.
    4. Leave your skin to dry and for the astringents to get to work, helping your pores to close and your skin to tighten.
    5. Use within 3-6 months, please.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Masque

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Masque

This is a really beautiful natural face treatment. This refining mask needs to be made on the day you intend to use it. Choose the ingredients based on your skin type to end up with a beautifully tailored product.

When using clays, especially Bentonite Clay, try to use wooden utensils. Skin toxins and impurities are usually positively charged. The clay attracts them and binds them. Using a metal spoon may deactivate the clay's incredible properties, making it less effective.

You Will Need:

    • A small mixing bowl - Non-metal
    • Wooden spoon
    • Measuring Cups and spoons - Non-metal
    • Weigh scale - (watch out for metal bowls and surfaces)

Ingredients:

Choose the wet ingredients to suit your skin type:

    • Sensitive Skin - 40 ml of Milk
    • Very dry skin - 40 ml of Heavy Cream or Thick Greek Yogurt
    • Dry skin - 20ml of Light Cream or Yogurt & 20g of Raspberries
    • Normal Skin - 40gms Raspberries
    • Combination Skin - 20gms  Raspberries & 40gms Avocado
    • Oily Skin - 60gms Avocado (plus a little water or hydrosol)
    • and…
    • 10 grams of Bentonite Clay (Montmorillonite (CI 77004)
    • 10 grams of very finely ground Oatmeal (Avena Sativa Kernel Extract (Oat))
    • 20 ml of Runny Honey (Mel)
    • 10 ml of Argan Carrier Oil (Argania Spinosa)
    • 5 drops of Neroli Essential Oil (Citrus aurantium)
    • 5 drops of Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium asperum var roseum)
    • 5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Method:

    1. If you are using Raspberries, mush them all down into a fine puree, and leave the seeds in as they will add to the exfoliating effects. If you are using Avocado, mush it all down until a puree, if it seems a bit dry, add some water or hydrosol.
    2. Place your chosen wet ingredients into the bowl and add the runny Honey.
    3. Add your essential oils to the carrier oil and combine thoroughly, then add this to the wet ingredients.
    4. Add in the Bentonite Clay and Oatmeal and stir well until you get a spreadable paste.
    5. If it is too runny - add more Oatmeal or clay, if it is too thick - add a little water.
    6. Use immediately.

How To Use:

    1. Ideally, make up a small amount in advance and do a 24- 48 patch test.
    2. Apply the paste to your face, neck, and decolletage, avoiding the eye area and mouth.
    3. Protect any surfaces or linen (especially from raspberries) and lie down and relax for 30 minutes.
    4. Rinse off with clean, warm water and pat your face dry.
    5. Do not store any leftover masque.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking a list of the ingredients with you.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care -  Moisturizer

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Moisturizer

We all need a really good moisturizer, this one is featherweight light, and leaves your skin feeling soft and velvety. You can make this slightly thicker if you want to, but if you are going to be following it with Neroli Night Cream and Serum, keep it nice and light.

Don’t skip the Glycerin, it is a humectant that grabs water from the air and plops it beautifully into your skin cells, it is your best friend here. Especially used alongside Rosehip carrier oil which is jam-packed with antioxidants and lovely nourishment for the skin.

You Will Need:

    • Mixing bowl
    • Measuring jugs, cups, and spoons
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • 100ml jar
    • Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative - follow the manufacturer's individual guidance on how much to add and when.

Method:

    1. If you choose to use a preservative consult the manufacturer's instructions and note how much to add and when.
    2. Measure out your Aqueous Cream and place it into the mixing bowl.
    3. Add your carrier oil and essential oils together and add to the Aqueous Cream, mix well until thoroughly combined.
    4. In your measuring jug, measure the Orange Flower water/Hydrosol, add the Witch Hazel and Glycerin into the water mixture, and mix well again.
    5. Pour a small amount of the fluid mixture into the Aqueous Cream in the mixing bowl, and combine well.
    6. Continue to slowly add fluid in small amounts until you get your desired consistency.
    7. If you feel it is too thick at this stage, add more Orange Flower water, and continue to combine until your desired consistency is reached.
    8. Use a jar funnel and fill your jar and lid immediately.
    9. Label and date your jars using an oil-proof label, listing all ingredients for safety reasons.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy.
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Night Cream

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Night Cream

Now, for those of you who have been researching using Neroli oil for face wrinkles, these next two recipes are for you.

This Night Cream is worth going to the trouble of making. It’s super luxe and bursting with skin-nourishing ingredients, like cold pressed seed oil stuffed with good fatty acids and cosmetic butter.

It looks decadent because it is. It’s the perfect treat if you have been feeling a bit low or down and feel the need for ‘something nice’. Treat yourself!

This is much easier and more cost-effective to make this in a bigger 500ml batch. You can use it as Body Créme too and once you start doing that, you’ll never go back! Sorry, not sorry.

You Will Need:

    • Double boiler
    • Hand or electric whisk
    • Mixing bowl
    • Measuring jug and spoons
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • Silicone spatula
    • Jar Funnel
    • 500ml jar (or 2 x 250ml jars)
    • Oil and waterproof label

Ingredients:

Optional: Preservative - follow the manufacturer's individual guidance on how much to add and when.

Method:

Melting The Waxes And Butters

    1. You always want to heat your cosmetic butter and carrier oils as little as humanly possible and you don’t want to scorch or burn them, so keep that heat as low as you can.
    2. Over low heat, warm your double boiler through and ensure that the base is not touching the water.
    3. Add the beeswax to the double boiler. Let it melt slowly, you can stir it to help the process along.
    4. Once the wax is half melted add the Shea Butter to the double boiler.
    5. As soon as that has half melted, add Coconut carrier oil to the double boiler as well.
    6. The moment it melts and everything is molten, remove it from the heat separate the top pan from the water, and set aside.

Cooling Down

    1. Choose a suitably sized bowl to fit in your fridge, a wide and shallow bowl will speed up the process somewhat.
    2. Pour the hot mixture into a bowl and place in the fridge for around 20-30 minutes.
    3. It needs to look like it is just starting to solidify again but is not yet solid.
    4. At this point remove it from the fridge and using a good quality silicone spatula, get every last precious morsel and decant it all into a large mixing bowl.
    5. TOP TIP: Don’t try and do the next step in a tiny bowl to save on washing up. Trust me on this, get a BIG bowl.

Mixing the Night Cream

    1. To make life easier, measure out the rest of your ingredients and have them close and ready to hand to work quickly.
    2.  Mix the Kaolin clay powder with a small amount of the Orange Flower water and mix until it is a thick paste. Carefully add more Orange Flower Water until it starts to slacken and has no lumps in it.  You want a pourable consistency. You can always add a bit more to get to this point.
    3. Add the combined carrier oils in a slow stream, and slowly start to whisk the oil in the wax and butter mixture.
    4. Whisk in the Honey and Glycerine until thoroughly combined.
    5. Add the Vitamin E into the bowl and mix well.

The Tricky Bit

    1. Now this is the tricky bit, so read and follow this carefully, please.
    2. You are mixing a water-based ingredient with an oil-based one and we all know oil and water don't usually mix unless we can emulsify them together.
    3. Very slowly start to add the Aqueous Cream. I’m talking about a small spoonful at a time and thoroughly whisking between additions.
    4. You then alternate this by adding a spoonful of the Kaolin paste and whisking again.
    5. Then you add more Aqueous cream, whisk, then more Kaolin paste, and so on, until you have combined both of those ingredients entirely.
    6. Whisk it on low for a couple of minutes to make sure that all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Checking and Adjusting the Consistency

    1. This is an ideal time to check the ‘skin feel’ of your Luxe Cream and make any adjustments
    2. If it feels lumpy or grainy it means that the wax and butter have not been fully incorporated. Mix it more thoroughly and if that does not work, use a stronger whisk or machine. Anyway, those tiny little lumps of butter or wax quickly disappear the moment you rub them into your skin and they melt.
    3. Too oily for you? Add in more Kaolin Clay Powder. First, mix it with Orange Flower Water and turn it into a slack paste, it helps avoid any lumps.
    4. Is it too thick for your liking? Add Orange Flower Water.
    5. If it feels too thin, did you do something wrong or miss an ingredient? Check that first! You can make it thicker by adding in more Shea Butter or a hard butter, like Mango. You need to melt it first, but it is likely you will end up with those tiny grainy bits of butter in the end result.

Adding Your Essential Oils

    1. When you are satisfied with the final consistency of your Night Cream, add your essential oils to the mixture and completely combine. Whisk for a further 2-3 minutes.

Finishing Your Night Cream

    1. A jar funnel makes life so much easier! Decant your mixture in your jar(s) and clean the rims meticulously. Use a dab of White Vinegar on a cloth to be sure.
    2. Cover the jars with a clean cloth, this helps to keep out dust and mold spores.
    3.  Please hear me on this! You MUST allow the mix to cool fully before adding your lid. If you ignore me the chances are it will go moldy, as it encourages moisture. Even if you have used a preservative, please still follow this step!
    4. Once the jars and mixture are fully cooled, lid tightly
    5. Label the jars clearly with oil and waterproof labels. List ingredients for safety reasons and date.

How To Use:

    1. I know you want to get stuck in because it’s just so luscious but please do a 24-48 hour patch test first!
    2. This Night Cream is a real treat for your face, but it is just as lovely on your hands and body as it’s such a beautifully rich cream. Given it is so rich, I don’t recommend it for facial daily use. I suggest that 2-3 times a week is more than enough and I would always use it at night. Alternate between this and the Neroli Face Serum for the best effects.
    3. Apply lightly to your face, neck, and decolletage, using upward circular motions.
    4. If you use it on your body please avoid your intimate areas.
    5. Use this within 6 months, please.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Serum

Neroli Essential Oil Face Care - Serum

When you want to give yourself a face massage this makes a wonderful facial oil. It is stuffed to the gunnels with cold pressed seed oil that just oozes glorious fatty acids and free radical fighting antioxidants. This unassuming face oil is a first-class serum and the pinnacle of all great skincare routines.

Rosehip carrier oil is packed with antioxidants, which makes it a powerful little oil. So much so that we recommend using only 10% of your total volume. Avocado and Castor Oils should also be kept at 40% of the total volume because of how rich they both are.

If you have environmentally damaged skin, or you smoke, swap out the Patchouli for Carrot Seed essential oil.

If you are on a budget, see below the ingredients list, and where to adapt it.

Make this in small batches, as some oils can go rancid quite quickly, and given you will only use so little each time, it makes sense to work in small batches. It’s so quick and easy to do anyway.

I’ll also show you how to turn this into a rather sensuous and aphrodisiac Massage Body Oil too. We add in some lovely Wheatgerm carrier oil to give a little ‘grip’ to the finished oil. See below for the recipe.

You Will Need:

    • Small measuring jug
    • Funnel
    • Stainless steel spoon
    • 50ml bottle with rubber-topped pipette.
    • Oil proof label

Ingredients To Make a Neroli Essential Oil Face Serum:

Optional: Preservative - follow the manufacturer's individual guidance on how much to add and when.

Adapting The Recipe To Suit Your Budget:

To cut down the cost but not compromise efficacy, use the following recipe:

Adapting It Makes an Aphrodisiac Body Massage Oil

Adapting It Makes an Aphrodisiac Body Massage Oil

Method:

    1. Measure out and combine your carrier oils in the measuring jug.
    2. Add your Glycerine and essential oils and stir well to combine.
    3. Use a funnel to decant your Face Serum into the bottle. It helps keep the bottle clean so your label will stick better!
    4. Add a label, listing all ingredients for safety reasons, date and add a 3-6 month expiry date.

How To Use:

Face Serum

    1. Do a 24- 48 patch test
    2. Dispense a couple of drops and work this into your face in upward circular motions.
    3. Add more oil as you need it, some days you may need more than others.
    4. You can use this Face Serum every day, but I suggest alternating between the Night Cream for the best results.
    5. Use within 3-6 months - you will be able to smell if any of the oils have turned rancid. If this happens simply make a new batch.

Massage Oil

    1. Do a 24- 48 patch test, you don’t want to spoil your big night with hives!
    2. Warm a little oil in your hands or in a small bowl and work gently but firmly into the skin.
    3. Avoid using it in intimate areas, please. If you do happen to get it down there, wash well with warm soapy water to remove any oil residue.
    4. Use within 3-6 months - you will be able to smell if any of the oils have turned rancid. If this happens simply make a new batch.

Safety:

    • Do not use it in the first 37 weeks of pregnancy
    • Avoid getting into the eyes. If you do, rinse with clean tepid water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention, taking the clearly labeled bottle with you.
    • Do not use the Body Massage Oil on intimate areas. Massage oils can affect the integrity of latex, and so are best kept away from condoms.
