About Mandarin Essential Oil
Where Does It Come From?
Our Mandarin essential oil has the scientific name of Citrus reticulata and ours has been sourced in Germany. Our producers cold press the peels of Mandarin fruits to extract the essential oils.
Mandarin essential oil started its vibrant life in China, where it was highly esteemed and prized, reserved only for royalty.
The essential oil was born out of resourcefulness, as many things often are. The trees are often pruned throughout the growing season, reducing the fruit yield in order to direct nourishment to only the most promising fruits.
Often, half the fruit yield can be discarded through this selective pruning process and rather than letting them go to waste, essential oil is extracted from the peel.
What Should It Look Like?
The color of Mandarin essential oil is often dependent upon the age of the fruit when the essential oil is cold pressed from the peel. Generally, you can buy three different variations of Mandarin essential oils
- Green Mandarin comes from the youngest fruits.
- Mandarin essential oil is usually extracted in between the fruit turning from yellow to a deep orange.
- Red Mandarin essential oil is from the ripest and most mature fruit.
The color of our Mandarin essential oil is clear to pale orange and has the usual thin consistency.
Our Mandarin essential oil comes from the red mandarin, which means you will need to be careful about phototoxicity.
Color and Phototoxicity
What Is Phototoxicity?
Phototoxicity can happen when certain constituents of essential oils react when exposed to UV light.
Most often it is Furanocoumarins that are responsible for these actions. They are natural chemicals found in some essential oils, and they are very prevalent in cold-pressed citrus oils.
A phototoxic reaction can result in skin reddening, inflammation, and rashes. These can be extremely itchy and in more serious reactions it can lead to blistering and burning of the skin.
So if you have used Mandarin essential oil on your skin, we advise that you do not expose it to direct sunlight or sunbeds for at least 12 hours.
Is Mandarin Essential Oil Phototoxic?
Our mandarin essential oil is from red mandarins, so from lovely ripe fruit, and as such then yes, our mandarin essential oil does carry a risk of phototoxicity.
What About Its Scent Profile?
Mandarin has a wonderfully uplifting bright, fruity scent profile. It is a little more delicate than its Sweet Orange cousin, but equally zesty and mouthwateringly delicious.
It is considered a top note in perfumery, which means that it is lighter and more ethereal. Despite its moderate to strong initial aroma strength, this top note can dissipate quite quickly when used on its own.
It will always last longer when you blend it and anchor the scent profile with some rounded heart notes and big beautiful base notes.
It blends well with woody fragrances, resinous scent profiles, fresh green herbs, and dried spices. I love to pair it with essential oils like Eucalyptus, Lime, Ginger, Cedarwood, and Patchouli.
Safety for Using Mandarin Essential Oil
- Maximum dilution for mandarin essential oil is 3%.
- Use on children would be safe after 6 months of age, but only use in dilutions of 1%.
- Avoid exposing your skin to direct sunlight for twelve hours after using mandarin essential oil.

Mandarin essential oil contains a variety of chemical constituents attributed with anti- inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.
It also has others demonstrated to have antibacterial and antifungal constituents.
In her study, Dosoky (2018) says,
“Mandarin oil is well known for its broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal actions. It inhibits the growth of several bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, as well as several fungi."
She went on to list Mandarin essential oil as having the following benefits and actions:
- Anti-proliferative - Suppresses cell growth, notably the growth of malignant cells into surrounding tissues.
- Chemoprotective - Reduces the side- effects of chemotherapy.
- Antioxidant - Protects cells from free radical damage.
- Antibacterial - Prevents the growth or spread of bacteria.
- Antifungal - Prevents fungal growth and is active against fungi.
Elkousy (2022) Also extols Mandarin essential oil’s virtues against Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Even going as far as to say it has superior biological activities for managing this bacteria.
This helps us to begin to see what a versatile essential oil Mandarin can be in our toolkits. It is an important essential oil for so many reasons in my own house, but let's have a look at some of the historical uses and see how other people have been using it.

5. How To Use Mandarin Essential Oil For Skin
When I first qualified as an aromatherapist, Julia Lawless’s Encyclopaedia of Essential Oils was my working bible. My beloved, dog eared copy is from 1992 and even back then, she cites Mandarin essential oil for the following uses in skincare:
‘Acne, congested and oily skin, scars, spots, stretch marks and toner’.
She also goes on to recommend it for fluid retention. 32 years on and it is still proving its worth in those very areas with aromatherapists across the world.
Stretch Marks
For stretch marks, use Mandarin essential oil blended with other essential oils like Helichrysum, Hyssop and Jasmine. For stretch marks, add these essential oils to highly nourishing carrier oil like Rosehip and Wheatgerm and regularly apply them to the skin, massaging them firmly into the skin.
Toner and Astringent
Mandarin essential oil is just delicious in a toner for clearing oily and congested skin. It is an astringent essential oil, which will help to close your pores after cleansing and firm up your skin beautifully. It can support in reducing sebum production, which contributes to oily skin.
Blend it with Ylang-Ylang to help balance an oily T-zone and hormonal skin. I use it in my toners and my moisturizer for its astringent properties to firm and smooth my skin.
Free Radical Fighting Antioxidants
It is jam-packed with antioxidants to fight free radicals. Antioxidants are the basis of most anti-aging skin care products. Why pay the hefty price tags of designer brands when you can create your own products brimming with them?
Puffy Skin
Mandarin is used by aromatherapists for different types of fluid retention. It can be useful if you have had a long night and wake up with puffy eyes. I also add it into my eye serums but it also works perfectly paired with Chamomile tea bags or slices of Cucumber to help reduce the inflammation and move any excess fluid.
Mandarin essential oil in skin care feels refreshing and the fragrance is wonderfully uplifting. Its sedative effects make it lovely for night creams. Experiment with mandarin essential oil benefits for skin yourself and see what you can add to your skincare routine.
Mandarin Essential Oil Recipe For An Astringent Toner
Toners are an intrinsic part of any skincare regimen. They are designed to drag out any last bits of dirt and grime after cleansing and astringent qualities help to close open pores. This reduces the likelihood of breakouts and blackheads.
Blend mandarin’s astringent actions with other astringent agents and you get wonderful skin tightening and firming actions. This is a wonderfully refreshing toner, that makes you feel uplifted.

Mandarin essential oil is stuffed with active chemical constituents that promote a healthy circulation, especially in the scalp, like Limonene and Triterpenes. Having a healthy circulation to the scalp is key to healthy looking hair. It is lovely to scalp massage oils.
I also find that it is a useful essential oil to protect hair from dullness and dryness. This helps to reduce the chance of split ends and hair breakage.

The Varicella zoster virus causes chickenpox. Most commonly it affects children and young adults as Chickenpox, but it appears as Shingles in adults. Shingles is rarely found in children. It is a herpes virus that can infect humans, there are nine known herpes viruses that affect the human body.
Mandarin Essential Oil Recipe For Soothing Pox Itch
Kids with chickenpox just want to scratch that itch and often scratching at the pox can lead to scarring, so we want to try and reduce that need to scratch as much as we can.
Simply tie this mixture in a muslin bag and hang it from the warm bath tap for welcome relief from the Pox Itch. You can also steep it in a cup of hot water for an hour to make an infusion. Allow it to cool and then blot onto your child's skin with a soft cotton cloth, like you might a Calamine Lotion.

8. Mandarin Essential Oil for Pain
Shingles is often accompanied by neuralgia, which is another area that mandarin essential oil may be helpful. However, Mandarin essential oil's benefits for pain are not fully understood.
A study from 2015 demonstrated that one of the constituents in mandarin essential oil - Methyl-N-methylanthranilate - interacts with TRP receptors involved in pain experience. (Correa, 2015)
Essential Oils Constituents Can Reduce Pain
Lakhan (2016) concluded that her study,
“Found a significant positive effect of aromatherapy in reducing pain. These results indicate that aromatherapy should be considered a safe addition to current pain management procedures as no adverse effects were reported in any of the included studies. Additionally, the cost associated with aromatherapy is far less than the cost associated with standard pain management treatment”.
Lakhan and her cohort make a good point about the costs associated with treating and managing pain. Since 99% of people experience chronic pain at some time in their lives, it is worth experimenting with essential oils. It should be stressed though that long term improvements may take time. Essential oils have cumulative effects and in the case of managing chronic pain, it can take some time to build up in our system to have a positive effect. It can be a welcome relief for both your body and your bank account!
It took me months to realize the value of the addition of Vetiver into my daily routine for my own chronic pain. Read about it here - Learning To Live With Endometriosis And How Essential Oils Can Help. Also, understanding what type of pain you are experiencing and how to address it with aromatherapy and essential oils is key, find out more in Healing Touch: Top Essential Oil Lotions For Aches And Pain Relief.

9. Mandarin Essential Oil For Your Diffusers
Only last week we had a customer enquiring about Mandarin essential oil diffuser benefits.
You can already see the versatility of this essential oil that you can easily capitalize upon within the home. Use it in your diffuser to calm hyperactive or fractious children. If your child is anxious, stressed or having trouble sleeping, diffuse in their bedroom for an hour before bedtime.
If you feel down in the dumps and a bit low, Mandarin essential oils can uplift you and help you feel better about yourself and your day. I also find it is wonderful for instilling a sense of protection and safety, so it’s lovely to use if you feel a bit vulnerable, singled out or bullied.
Turn it on when you have someone in the house experiencing respiratory issues. Mandarin is widely used for bringing soothing relief.
However, do be careful diffusing mandarin essential oil in your home if you have cats. Cats don’t possess the right enzymes in their livers to metabolize certain essential oils effectively. Mandarin is one of these essential oils. Always ensure you leave the door open if the cat wants to leave the room, and it is best to avoid rooms where the cat may be sleeping.
Mandarin Essential Oil Recipe For A Party Diffuser Blend
Mandarin is a wonderful essential oil for uplifting people and in Jill Bruce’s book, The Garden of Eden, she describes Mandarin as ‘chatty’. We have to agree, we find it energetic, playful and cheerful to boot.

10. Mandarin Essential Oil For Pest Control
Campolo (2020) found that, along with Lemon and Sweet Orange essential oils, Mandarin essential oil showed potential against Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), which is a key tomato pest. He concluded that:
‘These plant essential oils (EOs) may play a central role in arthropod pest control….Mandarin EO-based insecticide presented a significant impact on predator survival and reproduction. Conversely, all the tested compounds proved to be harmless for the soil enzymatic and the plant antioxidant activities. Overall, these results provide solid bases for the development of novel biopesticides for sustainable tomato crop protection’.
This shows very promising activity, certainly in protecting tomato crops from arthropod pests.
Alongside essential oils like Lemon, Rosemary, and Thyme, I use mandarin in my bug spray to control white, green, and black flies on my plants, both in the house and garden,
Mandarin Essential Oil Recipe For Pest Control Spray
Try this when those first bugs start to appear in the spring and use it throughout the growing season to discourage pests. I have noticed that it also seems to act as a deterrent for a period of time afterwards, when I have used it on my houseplants..
It is simple to make. Just pop it all in a dedicated plant spray bottle. I wrote the recipe directly on the bottle with a permanent marker. This not only reminds me how to make it, but is also great for safety, should it be misused. I would simply take the bottle to the relevant medical professional complete with the handwritten recipe! Otherwise, a waterproof and oil proof label should suffice.
Simply combine the following and decant into the spray bottle:
- 2 cups of Distilled Water
- 1 tsp of Dish Soap
- 20 drops of Mandarin Essential Oil (Citrus reticulata)
- 20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha piperita)
- 20 drops of Thyme Essential Oil (Thymus vulgaris)
- 20 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Safety:
- This is not designed for topical use on the skin.
- Avoid spraying into the face and eyes, if you do, rinse with clean warm water. Seek medical assistance if irritation persists, taking the labeled bottle with you.
- Store away from children and pets.
